This bachelor thesis deals with literary analysis of characters in works of Belarusian writer Vasil Bykaŭ. Despite numerous translations, his works are not yet thoroughly researched in czech context. Primary this thesis is focused on contribution of the current narrative analysis which has been neglected. First chapter outlines Bykaŭ's works with emphasis on his approach to shaping the characters in the broader context of the main tendencies of Soviet war literature of the second half of the 20th century. The following chapter explains the most common procedures of the construction of Bykaŭ's characters and describes an analysis of other narrative categories which are essential for complete character modeling. The third chapter focuses on a brief typology of the characters appearing across Bykaŭ's works; in the centre of attention, there are the ways in which the author transforms and enriches the canonical index of socialist realism (war literature) characters

Soviet fiction on World War II and contemporary values: The case of Boris Vasil\u27ev

When we study the history of the artistic portrayal of an historical event, such as World War II, we are really studying the changing perceptions of that event. These perceptions form the basis of cultural values, which in turn play a role in the formulation of national identity. This dissertation examines the work of one prominent Soviet war writer , Boris Vasil\u27ev, as the basis for a discussion of the literary portrayal of World War II in official Soviet fiction, and of how this theme operates in mass culture. Operating from the assumption that Vasil\u27ev is so popular because a broad spectrum of Soviet society can identify with the values embedded in his works, I suggest that we can ascertain those values by analyzing the intermedia transposition from fiction into film of the author\u27s two most famous works, sk10 sk25 sk30 sk35 and sk30 sk30 sk30. This analysis shows that the values are illuminated when we explore the boundaries between the different media versions: what remains the same when a work of fiction is transposed into film, and just as importantly, what changes occur (to insure that the same messages are conveyed in both versions), not so much in a technical sense, but through reorientation and reinterpretation. Also included in this dissertation is an overview of official Soviet fiction on World War II which serves as a contextual background for my discussion of Boris Vasil\u27ev. A representative work from each of the following periods is analyzed: 1939-43; 1943-47; 1947-Twentieth Party Conference in 1956; 1956-late 1960\u27s; 1970\u27s-early 1980\u27s; early 1980\u27s-present. The boundaries of these periods are more than just chronological and are determined largely by the tension between official Socialist Realist doctrine and the various approaches taken by writers to differing perceptions of the truth during the post-war years. It is in this context that I examine the history of the war theme in Soviet fiction in general, and the works of Boris Vasil\u27ev in particular

Dolomys cf. nehringi Kretzoi, 1959 (Fig. 31A) MATERIAL EXAMINED. — 1 M3 (Ms41); LM3 = 2.02. DESCRIPTION M3 bears three salient angles on each side. Except BSA3, all are well developed. The BRA1 and LRA3 are deep and narrow. They persist as normal folds throughout the crown instead of being subject to reduction by insulation. The enamel is not differentiated. There are not dentine tracks. Number of roots is two. REMARKS According to size, the tooth is smaller than the respective molars of the type species of the genus, Dolomys milleri (Nehring, 1898) (Méhely 1914). On the other hand, it resembles Dolomys nehringi from Csarnóta-2 both in general size (although slightly smaller) and occlusal pattern, judging from the Kretzoi’s (1959: abb. 4) illustration. The molars of this species were however not described in detail by this author. This circumstance, as well as the scarce material from Muselievo (e.g., only one M3), makes the conclusive determination difficult.Published as part of Popov, Vasil V., 2004, Pliocene small mammals (Mammalia, Lipotyphla, Chiroptera, Lagomorpha, Rodentia) from Muselievo (North Bulgaria), pp. 403-491 in Geodiversitas 26 (3) on page 470, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.537719

“POEMS ABOUT WAR” BY VASIL MAKHNO

    No full text
The topic of war in the literature has probably not been foreign and neglected on the example of any country, including the experience of Ukraine. A lot of poems, short stories and novels were written about the First and Second World Wars, and who would have thought that the theme of war would take the leading place in modern Ukrainian literature... As always, poetry reflected current painful issues and described the reality seen through the eyes of different poets and perceived by emotions. Vasyl Makhno, a Ukrainian writer and publicist living in New York, dedicated about twenty poems to this topic and even published “Poems about War” in the form of a cycle. Vasil Makhno’s poems about war attract the reader’s attention by their titles: “War”, “To the Motherland”, “Exit”, “Shevchenko”, “From Mariupol”, “Sadness Psalm”, “Bucha’s Psalm”, “Morning Doves’ Cooing” are created about the current disaster in the homeland. Historical, cultural or religious motifs are noticeable in the poems, and naturally, each of them is distinguished by an abundance of artistic techniques and intense emotional charge. The author describes with documentary clarity the battle that took place on the approaches to Mariupol, the despair of people, the destroyed houses, at the same time he remembers Taras Shevchenko, brings to life his monument, which stands proudly on a pedestal in front of the university in Kyiv and is a reliable source of Ukrainian bravery, and portrays him as an ordinary soldier who will defend his homeland with his chest and strengthen his back. in battle and tribulation. Bucha calls it a city of pain and fear and asks: when will it all end? What will happen in the coming months? Will the cities go up in fl ames again? Where can you fi nd solace? It should be noted that Vasyl Makhno’s poems are aimed at the aestheticization of the issue of war, and from this point of view it will probably play a signifi cant role in the history of Ukrainian literature. This is poetry about death and life, good and evil, their intersection, and once again confi rms that the more diffi cult the existence, the more painful the current events, the more clear the infinite possibilities of literature

FICTIONALISATION OF SUŠAK AND RIJEKA IN VASIL TOCINOVSKI'S SUŠAČKO POPODNE (SUŠAK AFTERNOON)

    No full text
Članak propitkuje moguću vezu Sušačkih subota Vladimira Polića i Sušačkoga popodneva makedonskoga pisca Vasila Tocinovskoga. The paper focuses on the possible link between Sušačke subote (Sušak Saturdays) by Vladimir Polić and Sušačko popodne (Sušak Afternoon) by a Macedonian author Vasil Tocinovski. Sušačke subote were published as essays between 1923 and 1925 in Primorski novi list. Polić’s essays were also published together with his short stories and novellas posthumously in 1989. Sušačko popodne is a recently published collection of 15 short stories that has won awards. The paper tries to identify stylisation of town sites, historical cronography of space and connotational transformations of Polić’s subtext in Tocinovski’s short stories. The paper also focuses on the interest in the author’s view of the Kvarner-Istria chronotope as a newcomer’s fictionalisation of the above-mentioned space. These stories topically intertwine the here and now with the there and then of Croatian and Macedonian mythical images. The author treats his heroes as those taking a nostalgic look from the bad present into a better past. The folklore fund, fantastic-magical and fairy tail heritage are the dominant motifs of this collection of short stories and model it
