Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of educational interventions on teachers' knowledge and attitudes towards epilepsy. A comprehensive literature search was conducted between January 2000 and July 2024 (Cochrane, Pubmed, Science Direct, Web of science, EBSCOHost, Embase/Elsevier ve Google Scholar). Word combinations of “teacher”, “epilepsy”, “knowledge”, “attitude” and “educational interventions” were used in the search process. Overall effect size, heterogeneity tests, publication bias and sensitivity analyses were performed with the random effects model. Comprehensive Meta- Analysis software (CMA 3.0) was used for data analysis. According to the homogeneity test results, Q, I2 and Tau values for knowledge were 205.797- 98.056 and 2.331, p<0.01, respectively, and for attitude were 36.001 - 91.667 and 0.193, p<0.01, respectively. According to the results, considering the average effect sizes within 95% CI, it was seen that the educational interventions applied to teachers had a positive and high effect size on teachers' knowledge and attitudes towards epilepsy (p<0.05). There is strong evidence that educational interventions for teachers increase teachers' knowledge and positively change their attitudes towards epilepsy

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a web-based epilepsy education program developed for primary school teachers on their epilepsy-related knowledge, attitudes, and self-management skills. Design and methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed. The study was conducted with 108 teachers (n = 54 intervention, n = 54 control) from four primary schools affiliated with a Provincial Directorate of National Education located in the western region of Turkey. While the control group continued with the standard curriculum, the intervention group received a 12-week web-based epilepsy education program. Data were collected at 3 and 6 months post-intervention using the Descriptive Information Form, the Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Epilepsy Among School Teachers Scale, and the Epilepsy Self-Management Scale for Teachers. Data analysis included one-way and multiple ANOVA, independent samples t-tests, and Bonferroni post hoc comparisons. Results: No significant differences were found between the intervention and control groups in terms of socio-demographic characteristics (p > 0.05). After the intervention, the intervention group showed significantly higher mean scores in epilepsy knowledge, attitudes, and self-management compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Within-group analyses also revealed statistically significant improvements in all three outcome measures among teachers in the intervention group over time (p < 0.05). Conclusions and implications for practice: The web-based epilepsy education program was found to be an effective, accessible, and user-friendly tool for improving teachers’ knowledge and attitudes about epilepsy, as well as enhancing their self-management skills in responding to epilepsy-related situations. Integrating such programs into teacher training may contribute to safer school environments and improved care continuity for children with epilepsy

This study was conducted to develop a measurement tool to achieve epilepsy self-management in teachers and examine its Turkish psychometric properties. This descriptive, comparative, correlational, and methodological study was conducted between May and August 2022 with 346 teachers between the ages of 24 and 67 working in public schools selected by simple random sampling method among the primary schools in the province where the research was conducted. In the descriptive data analysis, numbers, percentages, and averages were used in the psychometric analysis of the scale, content validity analysis, factor analysis, Cronbach's α, item-total correlation, and split-half method. The average age of the teachers included in the study was 31.14 + 2.27, of which 68% (n = 234) were women. In total, 90% of the teachers (n = 312) stated that they did not have the correct intervention information about epilepsy. The scale, which is a 5-point Likert type, consists of 23 items and three subdimensions. The scale's total Cronbach's α coefficient is 0.83, and the subdimension Cronbach's α values are, respectively, the first subdimension is 0.78, the second subdimension is 0.91, and the third subdimension is 0.65. Item-total score correlations ranged between 0.31 and 0.81 (p 0.90, and the RMSEA value was < 0.08. The primary purpose of this study is to develop the Epilepsy Self-Management Scale for Teachers

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
