A new method for detecting differential item functioning in the Rasch model
Differential item functioning (DIF) can lead to an unfair advantage or disadvantage for certain subgroups in educational and psychological testing. Therefore, a variety of statistical methods has been suggested for detecting DIF in the Rasch model. Most of these methods are designed for the comparison of pre-specified focal and reference groups, such as males and females. Latent class approaches, on the other hand, allow to detect previously unknown groups exhibiting DIF. However, this approach provides no straightforward interpretation of the groups with respect to person characteristics.
Here we propose a new method for DIF detection based on model-based recursive partitioning that can be considered as a compromise between those two extremes. With this approach it is possible to detect groups of subjects exhibiting DIF, which are not prespecified, but result from combinations of observed covariates. These groups are directly interpretable and can thus help understand the psychological sources of DIF.
The statistical background and construction of the new method is first introduced by means of an instructive example, and then applied to data from a general knowledge quiz and a teaching evaluation

35. Folge: Leise Gefahr – Lauter Schaden: Wie dich Einsamkeit krank macht
Frictional strengthening explored during non-steady state shearing. Implications for fault stability and slip event recurrence time
On natural faults that host repeating slip events, the inter-event loading time is quite large compared to the slip event duration. Since most friction studies focus on steady-state frictional behavior, the fault loading phase is not typically examined. Here, we employ a method specifically designed to evaluate fault strength evolution during active loading, under shear driving rates as low as 10−10 m/s, on natural fault gouge samples from the Waikukupa Thrust in southern New Zealand. These tests reveal that in the early stages of loading following a slip event, there is a period of increased stability, which fades with accumulated slip. In the framework of rate- and state-dependent friction laws, this temporary stable phase exists as long as slip is less than the critical slip distance and the elapsed time is less than the value of the state variable at steady state. These observations indicate a minimum earthquake recurrence time, which depends on the field value of the critical slip distance and the background slip rate. We compare estimates of minimum earthquake recurrence times with the recurrence times of repeating large earthquakes on the Alpine Fault in southern New Zealand and repeating small-magnitude earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault system in California. We find that the observed recurrence times are mostly longer than the predicted minimum values, and exceptions in the San Andreas system may be explained by elevated slip rates due to larger earthquakes in this region

Analysis and Optimization of Nonlinear Diode Grids for Shielding of Enclosures With Apertures
Lumped-element grids provide an attractive option for wave propagation control in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineering. This article investigates the peak shielding effectiveness (SE) of a diode grid used for protection of enclosures with apertures against high-intensity radiation fields (HIRFs). The nonlinearly loaded aperture is investigated with an efficient hybrid field-circuit simulation approach. Numerical experiments show that design aspects, e.g., aperture and enclosure size, grid density, impedance characteristic of lumped loads, play an important role in the field transmission through a diode grid which is nonlinear and time-variant. With a physics-based analysis of the interaction between the grid and the enclosure-backed aperture, nonlinear shielding techniques are identified that allow a control of the peak SE between 0 and 26 dB in novel ways. For the first time, the peak SE curve of a diode grid is demonstrated with four different field intensity dependencies, i.e., intensity low-pass, intensity high-pass, intensity bandpass, and intensity band-stop selectivities from tens V/m to hundreds of V/m. By considering design aspects into a two-step optimization procedure, practical guidelines are provided for the nonlinear shielding implementation
