    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     The most characteristic feature of modern business-economic life is the pressing need to make correct and rational decisions. Decisions concern the future and are made under conditions of uncertainty. All organizations operate in an atmosphere of uncertainty regarding future events and are obliged to make decisions given this uncertainty. Thus, the need for all choices made, including investment decisions, to be based on scientific analyses regarding possible future outcomes becomes imperative. Therefore, the ability to accurately predict future events is an essential part of today\u27s complex managerial planning and control, part of which is part of the role of a modern production engineer. Investment can be defined as the commitment of capital to productive assets, with the aim of greater benefits in the future. In a purely economic interpretation, an investment exists when some economic resources are converted into capital assets, such as an industrial unit. The implementation of an investment project requires a long-term commitment of capital, the return of which takes place throughout the duration of the investment. However, for an investor to proceed with a long-term commitment of capital, whether he is a legal entity (business) or a natural person, he must be convinced that the return that will result from this financial decision will be satisfactory. Therefore, before any investment decision - and more generally any business decision - an assessment of future events that may affect the cash-flow that will be generated by its execution is necessary.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Βιβλιογραφία: σ. 92-94Σε πολλές επιστήμες συχνά απαιτείται η παρακολούθηση της εξέλιξης ορισμένων φαινομένων στο χρόνο για την πραγματοποίηση προβλέψεων των μελλοντικών τιμών τους με τη βοήθεια των διαθέσιμων παρατηρήσεων. Μία σειρά από παρατηρήσεις ενός φαινομένου οι οποίες γίνονται σε συγκεκριμένες ισαπέχουσες χρονικές στιγμές αποτελεί μία χρονοσειρά. Για τη μελέτη των χρονοσειρών μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν διάφορες γραμμικές και μη γραμμικές μέθοδοι όπως οι παραδοσιακές μέθοδοι πρόβλεψης (μοντέλα ARIMA/SARIMA). Στην παρούσα μελέτη εξετάζονται τα στοχαστικά μοντέλα χρονοσειρών και ειδικότερα το μοντέλο ARIMA στην πρόβλεψη του ΑΕΠ (Ακαθάριστο Εθνικό Προϊόν) ανά τρίμηνο καθώς και το εποχικό μοντέλο SARIMA, το οποίο αποδεικνύεται καταλληλότερο για την περιγραφή των δεδομένων. Αρχικά, περιγράφονται τα βασικά στατιστικά χαρακτηριστικά των χρονοσειρών και στην συνέχεια αναλύονται τα μοντέλα ARIMA και SARIMA. Για την βέλτιστη επιλογή των παραμέτρων p ,d ,q στο μοντέλο ARIMA χρησιμοποιείται η μέθοδος Box-Jenkins. Η αξιολόγηση των προβλεπτικών μοντέλων πραγματοποιείται τόσο με το κριτήριο πληροφορίας Akaile (Akaike Information Criteria-AIC) και το Μπεϋζιανό κριτήριο πληροφορίας (Bayesian Information Criteria-BIC) για τα μοντέλα ARIMA όσο και με τα κριτήρια τετραγωνικής ρίζας μέσου τετραγωνικού σφάλματος (Root Mean Square Error-RMSE) και μέσου απολύτου σφάλματος (Mean Absolute Error-MAE), καθώς και με την αξιολόγηση των γραφικών παραστάσεων της συνάρτησης αυτοσυσχέτισης (AutoCorrelation Function-ACF) και της μερικής αυτοσυσχέτισης (Partial-PACF). Τέλος αναλύεται βήμα προς βήμα η διαδικασία που ακολουθήθηκε για την κατασκευή των μοντέλων ARIMA, SARIMA καθώς και για την εκτέλεση των προβλέψεων στα επιλεγμένα δεδομένα του ΑΕΠ ανά τρίμηνο.In many sciences it is often necessary to monitor the evolution of certain phenomena over time to make predictions of their future values with the help of available observations. A series of observations of a phenomenon which are made at specific equidistant moments in time constitutes a time series. Various linear and non-linear methods can be used to study time series, such as traditional forecasting methods (ARIMA/SARIMA models). In the present study, the stochastic time series models are examined and in particular the ARIMA model in forecasting GDP per quarter as well as the seasonal SARIMA model, which proves to be more appropriate for the description of the data. Firstly, the basic statistical characteristics of the time series are described and then the ARIMA and SARIMA models are analyzed. The Box Jenkins method is used for the optimal selection of the parameters p, d, q in the ARIMA model. The evaluation of the forecast models is performed with both Akaike Information (AIC) and Bayesian Information (BIC) Criteria for the ARIMA models and with the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) as well as with the presentation of the Auto Correlation Function (ACF) and Partial ACF (PACF) plots. Finally, the procedure for the construction of the ARIMA, SARIMA models is described and the execution of the forecasts on the selected GDP (GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT) data per quarter is analyzed step by step.95 σ

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

The suitability of GDP as an indicator of economic growth is constantly being questioned, while the search for alternative indicators is on the agenda of an impressively large number of bodies. At the same time, it is recognized that the contribution of human resources to economic growth, and in particular in the most developed regions of a country, is greater than the contribution of natural capital, as it increases labor productivity, becomes a vehicle for the exploitation and diffusion of technology and innovation, and produces high external economies that are diffused throughout the economy and society as a whole.
