According to Their Plots, Jane Austen’s Novels Are Not Comic Romances with Happy Endings
In order to answer two specific questions (“Do the plots of Jane Austen’s novels match the plot of Cinderella?” and “Do Austen’s novels include a comic or happy ending, defined as one where the author employs more pleasant language at the end of the novel than she did at the beginning?”), Jane Austen’s six major novels and Cinderella were scored for the pleasantness of their language with the Dictionary of Affect (Whissell, 2009). The answer to both questions, based on results of regression analyses and means comparisons, is negative. Austen’s novels are not variants of the Cinderella story, nor do they have the type of endings that characterize comic romances. Cinderella is very pleasant and has a distinct happy ending. In contrast, Emma, Pride and Prejudice, and Northanger Abbey are less pleasant and have equivocal endings, while Mansfield Park and Sense and Sensibility have tragic (relatively unpleasant) endings. Persuasion employs the least pleasant language overall but has a happy ending.</jats:p
Cynthia and Propertius, Haemon and Antigone: Prop. 2. 8, 21–24
The piece deals with the interpretation of Prop. 2. 8. 21–24. These verses seem to be problematic
and illogical over the years. In the poem, the speaker, deserted by his beloved Cynthia,
imagines himself dead and then describes the heroine’s reaction to this disastrous event.
Propertius thinks that she will be happy about his death and defile his grave. Then he suddenly
turns to Haemon, who commits suicide in despair of the Antigone’s death, and after
that threatens Cynthia to kill her. Firstly, it is incorrect to compare the righteous Antigone
with the unfaithful Cynthia. Secondly, the decision to kill the beloved is inept. Some scholars
transpose the verses in order to avoid the incoherence. Others try to interpret the passage,
leaving the lines in their initial order, but they usually think that Propertius compares himself
with Haemon and Cynthia with Antigone. The author of the article reconsiders gender roles
in this comparison and suggests a new interpretation. There are also some examples from the
Catullan and Propertian poetry, which show that the gender-inverted comparisons are widely
used in ancient literature and especially in Roman love poetry of the 1st century B. C., in which
they, probably, are part of a new literary strategy

A journey of self-discovery: the representation of minority girls in Cynthia Kadohata’s "The Thing About Luck", Alicia D. Williams’ "Genesis Begins Again" and Rebecca Balcárcel’s "The Other Half of Happy"
28 p. -- Bibliogr.: p. 27-28The United States is a country of constant immigration which could be defined by the concepts of diversity and multiculturalism. Given the large population consisting of minority people in the country, the American society is progressively enriching by virtue of the variety of cultures, races and religions; however, people of color have to endure discrimination and a slow process of integration. Besides, this multiplicity leads to children interacting with people ethnically different to them and since the acquisition of systematic prejudice has its origins in childhood, minority children’s literature and its representation could play a major part in avoiding it. The purpose of this paper is to explore how minority girls are represented in the middle-grade novels The Thing About Luck (2013) by the Japanese American author Cynthia Kadohata, Genesis Begins Again (2019) by the African American author Alicia D. Williams, and The Other Half of Happy (2019) by the mixed-raced half-Guatemalan, half-American author Rebecca Balcárcel, as well as to prove that the protagonists are in journey of defining their identity which is conditioned by the fact that they are women in a patriarchal world, by their difficult family circumstances and by their belonging to a minority in the United States. The first part of the analysis deals with the gender of the characters; it is examined how, for being women, they have to deal with gender roles and expectations of a male-centered society. In the second section, the family environments of the girls are analyzed, regarding how dysfunctional families cause children to have responsibilities affecting their mental health. Finally, this study covers the consequences of belonging to a minority, delving into the racism the girls endure along with the way they perceive themselves. This research aims to remark the importance of minority children’s literature for the representation of multicultural people with the objective of conveying real integration in America

Reading acts of narrative appropriation: four instances of fraudulent memoir
PhDThis thesis examines acts of narrative appropriation, the telling of purportedly‘authentic’ life stories by those for whom the stories are not theirs to tell. This
misuse or subversion of genre - the discipline of historical writing and the category
of autobiography - becomes a means for cultural, social and political dissimulation,
and the analysis focuses both on the act: the event, trespass, or ‘theft’ of another’s
life story, and on the cultural meaning that this event reveals. These narrative acts
are approached theoretically through discussions of what it means to be an author, a
reader, and through the consideration of literary and social genre, category and form.
In exploring identities at particular risk of appropriation, this thesis shows how
fraudulent appropriated narratives affect our reading of the world, and in turn
influence our perception of already marginalized social groups. My primary
examples include prostitution ‘narratives’, Native North American ‘memoir,’ and
fraudulent Holocaust survivor ‘testimony,’ with each text providing decoded
evidence of ‘genre-bending’ exhibiting a social and political intent. These works
seek to be read as authentic personal narratives, as autobiography, and that is how
they have been presented to the reader. However, they are imposters – fictional tales
desiring the elevated status of historical authenticity and willing to bend the rules
and contracts of genre to achieve their end. Here the appearance of authenticity is
achieved through the use of cultural and social ‘myth,’ or perceptions of cultural
identity, and as such its fraudulent construction is first and foremost a social act,
with a social and economic motivation. As this thesis concludes, these texts are
most successful when their own political and social ideologies echo and confirm that
of the readership; when their subjects, the fraudulent ‘I’ at the center of the text is
also a performative elaboration of cultural belief
