    Eleven varieties of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.) selected from nine localities in Turkey were evaluated for variability in yield and yield component characters in 1996 and 1997 cropping seasons using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Significant differences were found among the varieties for agronomic characteristics such as seed yield, biological yield and crop cycle. Factor analysis based on principal components (PC) showed that two factors represented 99.13% of the total variation. PC 1 accounted for 98.69% of the total variance that was highly correlated with seed and pod size factors. PC2 may be considered as crop cycle and yield/plant. The varieties clustered into two groups by factor and cluster analyses

    Chickpea is an important field crop for less quality fields and enduring to drought. In Isparta ecology, province of Turkey, as a sowing duty covers large area. This study aimed to investigate the variability of chickpea varieties grown under the ecological conditions of Isparta. Eleven varieties grown in Turkey were used in this two year long study (between the years 1996 and 1997) which has been sowed in a randomize block experimental design with four replications. Data were analyzed by multivariate statistical methods. According to the two-year results, the differences among varieties were found to be important in all components observed. Differences between years were proved to be significant in all components, except the number of pod per plant and the height of the first pod from soil. In both years, anthracnose (Ascochyta rabiei. [Pass.] Lab.) was not found in all varieties in natural conditions. It was found one principal component (PC1) by factorial analyses. But, eleven examined varieties were separated in two main groups and three subclusters by cluster analyses

    Yield and economic return response of silage maize to different levels of irrigation water in a sub-humid zone

    Field studies were conducted during the summers of 2007 and 2008 to determine the response of silage maize (Zea mays L.) to different levels of irrigation water to guide programs for the development of improved irrigation management practices for sub-humid zones. The experiments were carried out in Bursa, Marmara region, Turkey. Silage maize plants (cv. ‘Ada-523’) were subjected to different levels of irrigation using a drip system in the field on a clay-loam soil. Fully irrigated (FI = 100%) plants were irrigated at 100% pan evaporation (Epan) replenishment with 7-day intervals. In other treatments, irrigation was applied as excessive (EI = 125% Epan) and deficit (DI-75 = 75% Epan, DI-50 = 50% Epan, DI-25 = 25% Epan, NI -no irrigation). Plant height, first ear height, stem diameter, number of ears per plant and net income decreased with decreases in the amount of irrigation, but the effect of soil water deficit on the number of leaves per plant and ear ratio in forage was minor. The highest forage yields were obtained with EI (125% Epan), FI (100% Epan) and DI-75 (75% Epan) treatments. FI treatment produced the highest net income based forage yield. Severe soil water deficit substantially reduced forage yields and net income in both years. The results showed that full irrigation during the whole growing season is preferable for higher forage yield and net income. However, in regions of water scarcity, farmers should adopt the deficit irrigation (DI-75 = 75%, DI-50 = 50% and DI-25 = 25% Epan) approach to achieve economically sustainable crop production. As an alternative to full irrigation during the entire growing season, the irrigation at a rate of DI-75% Epan can be recommended as optimal level because it achieved irrigation water savings of 25%, an increase of 16% in forage yield irrigation water use efficiency, satisfactory crop morphological characters and an acceptable net income with a yield loss of only approximately 7% compared with full irrigation

    This study was carried out to determine the effects of bacterial inoculation and different nitrogen doses on yield and yield components of some dwarf dry beans varieties in Mustafakemalpap Vocational School Uludag University, Bursa, Turkey, during 1998-2000 years. In the study, three dwarf dry bean cultivars (Sahin-90, Yalova-5 and Yalova-17) and five N doses (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha(-1)) as ammoniumnitrate and conditions with and without bacteria (Rhizobium phaseoli) on yield and yield components were investigated. The complete randomized blocks design in factorial arrangement with three replications was used and seed yield, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant and 1000 seed weight were observed in the study. Three years, it was found that effect of inoculation with bacteria was not on yield and yield components of dry beans. Increasing nitrogen doses, compared with 0 kg ha(-1) N (control) increased the plant height, the number of branch per plant, and 1000 seed weight. But there were no significant differences between nitrogen doses in these characteristics. Yalova-5 gave the highest yield (1870.1 kg ha(-1)) among these dry bean cultivars used

    The effect of different irrigation water levels on grain yield, yield components and some quality parameters of silage maize (Zea Mays Indentata Sturt.) in Marmara region of Turkey

    This research was conducted in Bursa, Marmara region, Turkey, in order to determine grain yield and some morphological traits which affect the silage maize response to different irrigation water amounts. The grains’ percentage of crude oil and of determined. Field experiments were planned following randomized complete block design with three irrigation treatments. Irrigation treatments were created as water levels of pan evaporation (Epan) (I0)]. The highest value of grain yield was found to be 18,268 kg ha-1 in the I125 treatment, which represents excessive water. A quadratic relationship between grain yield and irrigation water applied was obtained. Deficit irrigation decreased grain yield and yield components except the percentage of crude oil and crude protein of grain, but improved the efficient use of irrigation water. Relationships between the grain yield and each yield component were positively significant. The highest correlation coefficient in the research gave the relationship between grain yield and plant height (r=0.957**). The results revealed that 1.25 × Epan and 1.00 × Epan treatments are preferable for higher yield. The results of this study also suggest that if water is limited, the application of 0.75 × Epan can be recommended as optimal treatment, because the best compromise among yield, yield components, quality and irrigation water use efficiency for maize was achieved with this application

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
