MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations

    No full text
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    No full text
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

LASERSPECTROSCOPIC INVESTIGATION OF HIGHER EXCITED ELECTRONIC STATES OF KAr

    No full text
Author Institution: Technische Universit\""{a}t Berlin, Institut f\""{u} Strahlungs- und KemphysikFirst successful measurements on higher excited electronic states of the van der Waals molecule KAr have been performed in a supersonic jet. The higher excited electronic stales 2Λ^{2}\Lambda are reached in a two-step excitation via the intermediate slate A2ΠA^{2}\Pi using two tunable cw dye lasers. One laser the pump laser with δ770\delta \approx 770 nm, was tuned to a suitable rovibrational line of the A2ΠX2ΣA^{2}\Pi \leftarrow X^{2}\Sigma transition populating one rovibrational sublevel of the A2ΠA^{2}\Pi state. The second probe laser (δ585\delta \approx 585 nm) was scanned over a range at about 200cm1200 cm^{-1}. By means of a systematic variation of the pumping transition we found a total of more man 500 lines due to the transition 2ΛA2Π^{2}\Lambda \leftarrow A^{2}\Pi. A large part of these lines could be assigned to the rotational structure of vibrational bands leading to vibrational levels of the two 2Σ2\Sigma states being correlated with the 72S^{72}S and the 52D^{52}D stale of the K-atom. In addition, the parameters of rotation and of spin-orbit coupling could be determined for 6 and 3 vibrational levels due to the 2Λ(52D)^{2}\Lambda(^{52}D) and the 2Λ(52D)^{2}\Lambda(5^{2}D) state, respectively For the 2Λ(52D)2\Lambda(5^{2}D) state an inverted fine structure splitting of around -04cm10 4 cm^{-1} was observed for ail vibrational stales which is in good agreement with the value predicted from the inverted tine structure splitting of the 52D5^{2}D state of The K atom. Up to now the interatomic potentials of the higher excited 2Λ2\Lambda slates could not be determined from our spectroscopic results as numerous avoided crossings between different potential curves are expected leading to large deviations from the usual ladder of vibrational energies

A D-vitamin pótlása javasolt a meddőség kezelésében, különösen jelentős hiányállapot esetén.

Kar, Haranath/0000-0002-4837-1172New criteria for the global asymptotic stability of the uncertain two-dimensional (2-D) discrete systems described by the Fornasini-Marchesini second local state-space model under various combinations of overflow and quantization nonlinearities are established. Sufficient conditions for the uncertain 2-D discrete systems to be free of overflow oscillations under a generalized overflow arithmetic are presented
