In this study, the effects of the Southern Oscillation on the streamflow, precipitation and temperature values of Turkey were investigated. For this purpose, being inspired from Kiladis and Diaz (1989), monthly average streamflow values of 78 streamflow stations and monthly cumulative precipitation values of 94 precipitation stations and for the possible relation of temperature with streamflow and precipitation the average temperature values of 62 stations uniformly distributed over Turkey were investigated in standard and non-standard seasons using the t-Test. In the next part of the study, the monthly data belonging to the El Niño years of the streamflow and precipitation data sets were taken out of the original data sets and new data (assuming El Niño did not occur) were generated using RBANN model. The answer of the question ?if the monthly data of the El Niño years were absent, would there be any difference or not? was looked for by analyzing the original and the synthetic data in terms of their variances, means, populations and autocorrelation coefficients. The t-test results presented the effects of Southern Oscillation on Turkey and most of the anomalies were respectively seen on the precipitation and streamflow data of the country. The anomalies obtained with the average temperature data showed regional effect and appeared with opposite signals with respect to the anomaly signals of precipitation and streamflow data. For all three data types, the signal seasons defined with Karabörk and Kâhya (2001) and Karabörk and Kâhya (2003) presented more evident anomalies than the standard seasons?. The analyses performed with RBANN were also indicated the effects of Southern Oscillation on Turkey?s streamflow and precipitation data both of which presented definite differences between the original and synthetic data sets. These differences were seen clearer for the signal seasons defined with Karabörk and Kâhya (2001) and Karabörk and Kâhya (2003). At the end of the study, the regions affected from the El Niño Southern Oscillation in terms of streamflow and precipitation data of Turkey were given on the maps by comparing with the regions determined by Karabörk and Kâhya (2001) and Karabörk and Kâhya (2003)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    ENSO MODULATIONS ON STREAMFLOW CHARACTERISTICS

El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has been linked to climate and hydrologic anomalies throughout the world. This paper presents how ENSO modulates the basic statistical characteristics of streamflow time series that is assumed to be affected by ENSO. For this we first considered hypothetical series that can be obtained from the original series at each station by assuming non-occurrence of El Nino events in the past. Instead those data belonging to El Nino years were simulated by the Radial Based Artificial Neural Network (RBANN) method. Then we compared these data to the original series to see a significant difference with respect to their basic statistical characteristics (i.e., variance, mean and autocorrelation parameters). Various statistical hypothesis testing methods were used for four different scenarios. Consequently if there exist a significant difference, then it can be inferred that the ENSO events modulate the major statistical characteristics of streamflow series concerned. The results of this research were in good agreement with those of the previous studies.TUBITAKTurkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [YDABAG 102Y146]We appreciate Dr. Karabork who helped us conduct the hypothesis testing and reviewed the manuscript. Tez (Doktora) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2005Thesis (PhD) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2005Hidroklimatolojik değişkenlerin irdelenmesi bize hidroloji ile iklim arasındaki ilişkileri açıklamaya yardımcı olabilir. Hydro-climatic variables tend to reflect climatic change and can help in understanding the relations between hydrology and climate. Basis objective this thesis, a rough picture of lake-levels hydroclimatology in Turkey is desired to be depicted. Turkish lake-levels dataset are statistically tested with respect to homogeneity. 25 lake-levels records and nearby place precipitation records, scattered all over Turkey, are studied with first harmonic analysis revealing the lake-levels regime and climatological patterns of Turkey. Existence of trend in annual mean of Turkish lake-levels has been investigated. Turkish lake-levels were analyzed in association with both the Southern Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The influences of the extreme phase of Southern Oscillation on Turkey’s lake-levels pattern have been examined. Time series of Turkish lake-levels are analyzed for trends, periodicities and autoregressive components. In analysis of lake-levels variation in time-scale domain, the main goal is to examine variation in time-scale domain by the continuous wavelet transform and global spectrums of it. The global spectrums of the continuous wavelet transform clearly explained climatic characterization of the analyzed region. It was founded that some interesting correlations between global spectrums of the lake- levels from different climatic regions were founded. Lake-levels series and NAO index were analyzed by wavelet transform The other result was that periodic structures of the lake-levels related with NAO are from 1-year scale to 10 years scale levels.DoktoraPh

The detection and attribution of past trends, changes and variability in climatic variables is essential for the understanding of potential future changes resulting from anthropogenic activities. Parametric and non-parametric procedures are utilized to detect to trends in climatically variables. Consequently, non-parametric procedure have been used commonly because of require of not much acceptance. In this study, precipitation trend analysis will be determine by non-parametric procedures include of serial correlation and seasonality . For this purpose, “Mann-Kendall” test and “Sen’s T“ test will be carry out to the time series. The application of a trend detection framework in Turkey has resulted in the identification some significant trends, especially January, February, September precipitation and annual average precipitation. Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2004Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2004Bu çalışmada küme analizini, Türkiye akım verilerinin benzer akım özelliklerini içeren bölgelerinin nesnel yaklaşımla tespiti amacıyla uyguladık. In this study we applied cluster analysis to the task of objectively classifying streamflow data over Turkey into regions containing the similar streamflow patterns. The performances of the three standardization techniques were also tested and standardizing by range performed better than standardizing with the zero mean and unit variance. Clustering was carried out using Ward’s method which became prominent in atmospheric researches with squared Euclidean dissimilarity measures on 80 streamflow stations with natural flow regimes where no intensive river regulation has occurred. Using cluster analysis we investigated that the zones having similar streamflow pattern can not be overlapped with the conventional climate zones of Turkey but streamflow regions are coherent with climate zones of Turkey redefined by applying CA to total precipitation data and homogenous streamflow zones of Turkey defined by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Use of the regional streamflow information generated in this manner can significantly improve the accuracy of stream predictions.Yüksek LisansM.Sc

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
