Morphology and art in the work of Lelio Orci
: Lelio Orci, chairman of the Department of Morphology at the University of Geneva Medical School in Switzerland, was one of the most eminent morphologists of the last century, author of fundamental contributions to the study of microanatomy, especially regarding the ultrastructure of the endocrine pancreas and of the molecular mechanisms of cell secretion. In his work, Orci transformed EM-ultrastructure into a creative art form. The aim of this article is to demonstrate, through a few examples of the scientific work of this extraordinary scientist the reality of this assertion
Possibilities and challenges of an integrated development using a combined SysML-model and corresponding domain specific models
The development of a production plant, with multiple involved disciplines, requires many different models such as simulation models for the physical domain or models of the control-software. As all these models represent parts of the same system, it is inefficient to develop every model from scratch. Rather an integrated model, which considers all relevant aspects, should be set up first and from this the required domain specific models should be generated through model transformations. For the integrated model, the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) poses a suitable possibility to integrate the views of the different disciplines. Based on a literature research, existing model transformations from the integrated model to specific models as well as necessary extensions are presented. In this way a framework for an integrated development, where the SysML-model forms the integrating core model of the system, while the simulation of the different parts is carried out in domain specific simulation tools, can be established. Core benefits of this method are the consistency of the models, and the fast and cost-efficient simulation and testing of the system at different points of the development cycle and with different levels of detail. © IFAC
Author name disambiguation in digital libraries using social networks and genetic programming
Digital libraries have become an important source of information for scientific communities. However, by gathering data from different sources, the problem of duplicate and ambiguous information about author names arises. Traditional methods of name disambiguation use syntactic attribute information. However, recently the use of relationship networks, which provides semantic information, has been studied in data disambiguation. In author name disambiguation, the co-authorship relations can be used to create a social network, which can be used to improve author name disambiguation methods. This dissertation presents a study of the impact of adding social network analysis to author name disambiguation methods based on syntactic attribute information. We present a machine learning approach based on Genetic Programming and use it to evaluate the impact of social network analysis in author name disambiguation. Through experiments using subsets of real digital libraries, we show that the use of social network analysis significantly improves the quality of results. Also, we demonstrate that match functions created by our Genetic Programming approach are able to compete with state-of-the-art methods

Trapped hydrogen vibrational density of states measurement using IINS PdH0.0011 at 5 K and 300 K with incident neutron energy of 250 meV
Hydrogen trapped at dislocations in Pd was studied with the incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (IINS) at two temperatures over the energy transfer range of 250 meV. The primary objective of this study was to study the vibrational density of states (VDOS) of deformed PdH0.0011 at 5 and 300 K over an energy transfer range corresponding to the multi-phonon and second order harmonic regime respectively.
A free recoil neutron subtraction method was developed to identify the proton recoil intensity within the impulse approximation. The mass of recoil particle is 1.10 amu and 1.12 amu while the recoil energy is located at 208 and 206 meV for 5 K and 300 K respectively.
The 5 K VDOS primary peak energy was observed at 61.4 meV, and is attributed to the β phase palladium hydride. The 300 K VDOS first harmonic peak at 68.2 meV corresponds to the α phase palladium hydride.
The comparison of experimental and calculated results indicate the higher energy peak found at 5 K is due to multiphonon events and shows spectral hardening leading to a higher energy; comparing to the 4 K PdH0.63 data. The environment of trapped hydrogen in this research is perturbed and results in different peak positions.
The comparison of experimental and calculated results of second harmonic peak at 300 K shows good correlation with the data of PdH0.014 at 295 K, in both the anharmonicity parameters (19 meV) and the peak position. The given value of 137 meV in the published data was not found in the measurement, likely due to a loss of degeneracy and associated broadening.
This free recoil subtraction method was supported by the two dimensional plots of energy transfer versus wave vector transfer (E v.s Q) before and after recoil subtraction. The shift of intensity maps at free recoil region and second peak area confirmed the effectiveness of the recoil subtraction method.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2013-04-23T14:10:00Z

Fertility tables for birth cohorts by color; United States, 1917-73
The tables in this volume present fertility data for actual groups or cohorts of women as they pass through their childbearing years of 14 through 49. The tables contain data for calendar years 1917-73. The data will be updated annually in Vital Statistics of the United States, Volume I, Natality, beginning with the 1974 data year. These data have been prepared as a revision and extension of the cohort fertility rates deveIoped by Pascal K. Whelpton and Arthur A. Campbell. The set of rates in this volume utilizes re- vised population estimates prepared by the U.S. Bureau of the Census for this purpose, and has been extended to include data for the two major color groups, white and all others, as well as for all women.[Robert L.
