    Christ as the Covenant: Justin Martyr's Interpretation of the New Covenant in Jeremiah 31.31-32

    This thesis attempts to reveal a neglected facet of Justin Martyr’s idea of the new covenant (NC), with a focus on Justin’s identification of the new covenant with Christ. It is an effort to seek its Jewish origins. Justin’s interpretation of the NC in Jeremiah 31(38).31-32 is indebted to an early liturgical tradition preserved in Luke 22 and 1 Corinthians 11. This interpretation of the NC as the Sacrament is linked with his identification of the NC with Christ, since Justin views the Eucharist as the embodiment of the divine Logos, which Justin considers to be equal to Christ. Justin’s NC does not only refer to the Eucharist, but baptism as well. Although Justin’s identification might have been partly influenced by the Kerygma Petri, which identifies the Law with the Lord, it is rather significantly influenced by the Jewish traditions. This element in Justin’s use of the NC is shaped by the textual/exegetical traditions of the OT/Hebrew Bible such as LXX, a Jewish recension (a καίγε type/‘Theodotion’, or Aquila), and the PT tradition in its oral stage. Particularly, Justin detects the theme of the ‘coming/going out of תורה/תודה’ in Isaiah 2.3/51.4 and the Book of the Covenant—the context of the NC text of Jeremiah (30-31 [37-38])—with his knowledge of a Hebraizing reading of Jeremiah 30.19 attested in the version of Aquila; Justin’s juxtaposition of these verses in Dialogue 11 and 24 indicates that he views תורה in Isaiah 2.3 and 51.4 as identical with תודה/εὐχαριστία in Jeremiah 30.19. Moreover, Justin learned the Midrashic tradition on the water of Marah, which involves Jewish metaphors of ‘tree (of life)’ and ‘water’ as the Torah, orally from the early PT tradition. Justin’s knowledge of this Midrashic tradition, together with his recognition of LXX Jeremiah 11.19 which associates ‘tree’ with ‘bread’, and LXX Exodus 23.25 which juxtaposes ‘bread, water, and wine’, has facilitated his identification of Christ with the new Law/covenant, namely the Sacraments. The identification of the messianic symbol of ‘ruler’s staff’ with the ‘covenant of kingship’ in 4Q252 strengthens our view that Justin’s identification of the NC with Christ is rooted in Jewish traditions, since in Dialogue 86, Justin also associates ‘sceptre/rod’ with the ‘tree of life’, which is the new Law/covenant and Christ. The findings of this thesis have an implication on the scholarly view of Justin’s use of the testimony sources. This study confirms the fact that Justin’s OT texts are often quoted from secondary sources. As far as his use of Jeremiah 31.31-32 and his OT citations in Dialogue 86 are concerned, however, his combinations and alterations of the biblical texts are related to his theological view of the NC, so that they may indicate Justin’s reworking of the OT/source material; the influence of contemporary Jewish traditions can be traced even in the upper layer of Justin’s source material

    Florus and Dio on the enslavement of the provinces

    This paper draws attention to the unprecedented prominence of metaphors of enslavement to Rome in the historical narratives of Florus and Cassius Dio. Following an analysis of the thematic importance of the trope in their respective works, I point to further parallels in Herodian and Justin which suggest that the trope proved particularly productive in both Latin and Greek historiography in the late second and early third centuries CE. The end of the paper considers broader cultural developments that might underlie this phenomenon, notably the proliferation of dominus as an epithet for the emperor and the ongoing enfranchisement of provincials.Peer reviewe

    The Role of Idols in Shaping the Identity of Young People – a Case Study of Justin Bieber

    The article is devoted to the role of idols in shaping the identity of young people. In the first part, the author introduced the family and school as the main educational authorities of children. This part shows the role of the church and the peer group. During the maturation stage, mass media also appear, and with them idols who assume the role of authorities. A description of who can be called an idol has been given, and several subdivisions have been made to represent the existing celebrity types. The model of adolescents’ addiction to them and the negative consequences that often follow were also described. In the second part of the article, using the example of the famous singer Justin Bieber, the author presented the way in which idols affect young people. First, the life of this star was described and the events which affected his popularity. Several of his songs have also been interpreted. At the very end, comments on Justin Bieber from an online forum were presented, illustrating how the fans and the rest of the public perceive the singer. The last part briefly shows what pedagogical contexts can be introduced to the identity and activity of an idol such as Justin Bieber

    Astrocyte Specificity and Coverage of hGFAP-CreERT2 [Tg(GFAP-Cre/ERT2)13Kdmc] Mouse Line in Various Brain Regions

    Astrocyte is the most abundant cell type in the central nervous system and its importance has been increasingly recognized in the brain pathophysiology. To study in vivo function of astrocyte, astrocyte-specific gene-targeting is regarded as a powerful approach. Especially, hGFAP-CreERT2, which expresses tamoxifen-inducible Cre recombinase under the human GFAP promoter, has been developed and characterized from several research groups. However, one of these mouse lines, [Tg(GFAP-Cre/ERT2)13Kdmc] from Ken McCarthy group has not been quantitatively analyzed, despite its frequent use. Here, we performed comprehensive characterization of this mouse line with quantitative analysis. By crossing this mouse line with Ail4 (RCL-tdTomato), a very sensitive Cre reporter mouse line, we visualized the Cre-expressing cells in various brain regions. For quantitative analysis, we immunostained S100 beta as an astrocytic marker and NeuN, tyrosine hydroxylase or calbindin as a neuronal marker in different brain regions. We calculated 'astrocyte specificity as the proportion of co-labelled S100 beta and tdTomato positive cells in the total number of tdTomato positive cells and the `astrocyte coverage' as the proportion of co-labelled S100 beta and tdTomato positive cells in the total number of S100 beta positive cells. Interestingly, we found varying degree of astrocyte specificity and coverage in each brain region. In cortex, hypothalamus, substantia nigra pars compacta and cerebellar Purkinje layer, we observed high astrocyte specificity (over 89%) and relatively high astrocyte coverage (over 70%). In striatum, hippocampal CAI layer, dentate gyrus and cerebellar granule layer, we observed high astrocyte specificity (over 80%), but relative low astrocyte coverage (50-60%). However, thalamus and amygdala showed low astrocyte specificity (about 65%) and significant neuron specificity (over 30%). This hGFAP-CreEKT2 mouse line can be useful for genetic modulations of target gene either in gain-of-function or loss-of-function studies in the brain regions with high astrocyte specificity and coverage. However, the use of this mouse line should be restricted to gain-of-function studies in the brain regions with high astrocyte specificity but low coverage. In conclusion, hGFAP-CreERT2 mouse line could be a powerful tool for gene-targeting of astrocytes in cortex, striatum, hippocampus, hypothalamus, substantia nigra pars compacta and cerebellum, but not in thalamus and amygdala. © Experimental Neurobiology 2018.11Nsciekc

    Este trabajo contiene un análisis del Instituto de la Mujer (IM), el principal organismo público de igualdad de la Administración central en España. Al igual que las instituciones feministas de otros países, el IM fue establecido con el propósito de impulsar el establecimiento de políticas que contribuyeran a mejorar la posición de las mujeres en la sociedad. La primera parte del artículo examina el proceso de creación del IM, prestando especial atención al papel desempeñado por el movimiento asociativo de mujeres, así como a la importancia de las influencias internacionales. Se estudian además las principales características formales de la institución. La segunda parte contiene una evaluación (provisional) del impacto del IM en la formulación y puesta en práctica de las políticas de igualdad. Por último, se examinan el carácter y las consecuencias de las relaciones formales e informales existentes entre los miembros del movimiento feminista y del feminismo institucional.Publicad

    This study is about the analysis of derivational affixes as found on song lyrics in Justin Bieber’s Purpose Album. This study aims to describe the process of derivational affixes and to find out the functions of each derivational affixes on song lyrics in Justin Bieber’s Purpose Album. The descriptive qualitative method is used in this study to investigate derivational affixes on song lyrics of Justin Bieber’s Purpose Album. The data of this study are in the form of words which contain English affixes. The researcher acts as the key instrument- human instrument. The technique for collecting the data are by download the song of Justin Bieber’s Purpose Album on the internet, reading the entire data source cautiously, and collecting the data which contain derivational affixes. Then it is followed by identifying, classifying, and analyzing the data as the procedures of data analysis. At last, drawing the conclusion is also required. The result of this study shows that derivational affixes are found in Justin Bieber’s purpose album. There are two types of affix is used. They are suffix and prefix. There is no infix is used. Types of suffix which are found -ty, -ness, -ion, -ful, -er, -y, -ve, -ive, -al, -ent, -ary, -ence, and -ly. Meanwhile, prefixes which are found, they are re-, in-, pro-, com-, un-, im-, and dis-. The functions of derivational affixes consist of noun forming, adverb forming, adjective forming, and verb forming. The mostly used of affixes is suffix, it is the suffix –ion to form a noun and –ly to form an adverb

    Justin: Hybrid CPU/Memory Elastic Scaling for Distributed Stream Processing ⋆

Auto-scalers adjust the number of parallel instances of these operators to support a target rate. Current auto-scalers couple CPU and memory scaling, allocating resources as one-size-fits-all packages. This contrasts with operators' high diversity of requirements. We present Justin, an auto-scaler that enables hybrid CPU and memory scaling of DSP operators. Justin monitors both CPU usage and the performance of operators' storage operations. Its mechanisms enable finegrain memory allocation for tasks upon a query reconfiguration. The Justin policy identifies individual operators' memory pressure and decides between adjusting parallelism and/or memory assignment. We implement Justin in Apache Flink, extending the Flink Kubernetes Operator and the DS2 CPU-only auto-scaler. Using the Nexmark benchmark, our evaluation shows that Justin identifies suitable resource allocation in as many or fewer reconfiguration steps as DS2 and supports a target rate with significantly fewer CPU and memory resources
