Get PDFGregory, Richard Claxton “Dick” (Born, October 12, 1932, St. Louis, Mo.), African American comedian and civil rights activist whose social satire changed the way white Americans perceived African American comedians since he first performed in public. Gregory’s autobiography, Nigger, was published in 1963 prior to The assassination of President Kennedy, and became the number one best-selling book in America. Over the decades it has sold in excess of seven million copies. His choice for the title was explained in the forward, where Dick Gregory wrote a note to his mother. “Whenever you hear the word ‘Nigger’,” he said, “you’ll know their advertising my book.” In 1984 he founded Health Enterprises, Inc., a company that distributed weight loss products. In 1987 Gregory introduced the Slim-Safe Bahamian Diet, a powdered diet mix, which was immensely profitable. Economic losses caused in part by conflicts with his business partners led to his eviction from his home in 1992. Gregory remained active, however, and in 1996 returned to the stage in his critically acclaimed one-man show, Dick Gregory Live! For most readers of this important book, little is known about the author himself. This article explores the religious life and theological foundations of John Milton Gregory, who was both author of The Seven Laws of Teaching and founding president of the University of Illinois. Utilizing his spiritual diaries preserved in his daughter's biography of her father and archival sources from the University of Illinois, this essay offers a theological and spiritual understanding of this important historical figure. </jats:p

The purpose of engagement in this internship is for me to gain experience and knowledge of marketing a small business that may help to prepare me for the field I want to enter professionally. My STEP Signature Project will teach me the ins and outs that go into the successful portray of a business to a community. It was also teach me the levels of work required in owning and operating a business. A leadership component is present in my Signature Project because it helps to develop my portfolio through intensive exposure to good professional business practices. My duties will be to take pictures and craft posts that will portray what the business is attempting to in the best means possible. I will have to use creativity to create the posts and to make sure I am successfully and professionally presenting the business to the community. My project will help to influence my post-graduation plans and if I want to own my own practice or not. Postmodernism and Aesthetic Pluralism: Representation and Resistance in Multiverse Films
Get PDFEach narrative has a way of constructing its own fictional world or universe, but in recent years it has been nearly impossible to walk into a movie theater without entering the multiverse, an infinite array of fictional universes. Popular films in the Western world are expanding the boundaries of fiction by creating multiverse frameworks in which many cultural interactions are possible. Here, I conduct a discursive analysis of both singular and world-building multiverse narratives like A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), Marvel’s Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), and Sony and Marvel’s Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) to investigate their work of representation and resistance. Specifically, these films play with otherizing and demonstrate a theoretical understanding of why cultures are different from one another. Using relativism and pluralism on screen, they elaborate on representation or meaning-making. These films are also portrayed using a postmodern characteristic which I call aesthetic pluralism: a narrative tactic in which film borrows from the concepts and aesthetics of short-form media. Through their conceptual and stylistic elements, multiverse films embody postmodern pluralism, refusing any binary of high and low culture. As such, even despite the commercial interests of popular culture which may tokenize diversity and adhere to the conventional frame of film, these popular films are at once translating cultural processes and intentional in their mode of storytelling. They not merely another ‘opium of the people; pop culture audiences are not unmoving. Rather, multiverse films are impressive forms of postmodern expression which do the work of semiotic resistance, allowing audiences to theorize and critically engage with the ways that others make meaning.No embargoAcademic Major: Comparative Studie
