The Experience of “the Other World” in Tomasz Różycki’s Poetry
One of the important ontological assumptions of the poetic reality created in Tomasz Różycki’s poems is the multiplication of reality. The article aims to describe one of the characteristic “anti-worlds” in his work – the world of the dead. Within the analytical framework the author of the article placed the presumable lyrical ego’s ability to penetrate the borders of death and his relationships with “the other side” of [email protected] Chomiuk, dr hab., prof. Między dominacją a potrzebą intymności. Recenzja książki „Tomasz Domański. Pomniki czasu 1992–2018”
The author undertakes to review the book Tomasz Domanski. Pomniki czasu 1992–2018 (Tomasz Domanski. Monuments of the Time 1992–2018), which she examines from two perspectives. She combines the formal qualities of the publication with the formal features of Domanski’s work and situates them in the field of such qualities as masculinity, power, strength, domination. On the other hand, in the non-standard form of The Illustrated Biography and the inclusion in the book of a photocopy of Domanski’s personal correspondence, diploma, student identity card, collected press clippings and private photographs, the author sees the artist’s need, incompatible with his domineering rhetoric of the publication, to tell his personal story going beyond problems of an artistic nature. The use of personal memorabilia and artefacts the author combines with the so-called turn to things, a methodology that is gaining popularity in contemporary humanities. On the occasion of the review of the book, the author examines Tomasz Domanski’s work over the years, demonstrating inspirations from the American art of the 1960s and 1970s. She points to the usefulness of the methodological model of the Sculpture in the Expanded Field by Rosalind E. Krauss, paying also attention to the postminimalistic or conceptual character of the materials used by Domanski (ice and wax subject to dematerialization)
Semi‐parametric accelerated failure‐time model: A useful alternative to the proportional‐hazards model in cancer clinical trials
The accelerated failure-time (AFT) model has been long recognized as a useful alternative to the proportional-hazards (PH) model. Semi-parametric AFT model has been known since 1981. Its use has been hampered by the difficulty in solving the estimating equations for the model's coefficients. In recent years, however, important developments have taken place regarding the methods of solving the equations. In this article, we briefly review the developments, focusing mainly on rank-based estimation. We conduct a simulation study that directly focuses on the applicability of the model in the context of (cancer) clinical trials. We also investigate the robustness of the AFT model to the omission of covariates. Finally, we conduct a meta-analysis of multiple clinical trials in gastric cancer to illustrate the benefits of the use of the model in practice. The author thanks the GASTRIC (Global Advanced/Adjuvant Stomach Tumor Research International Collaboration) Group for permission to use their data. Unread (for too long): Tomasz August Olizarowski
Tomasz Olizarowski (1811–1879) is a largely forgotten author, prolific poet and playwright, known only to a small group of specialists, who have recently started work on restoring his reputation. To do him justice is not easy task as we possess neither a complete list of his publications with basic textual and bibliographic data nor a reliable picture of the critical response they met with. While the body of materials on Olizarowski that have already been identified needs to be ordered and re-examined, the burden of work is growing as new items, also in bad need of verification, continue to surface both in Poland and abroad. This is a progress report of sorts with a number of updates, corrections and clarifications by the author of this article herself
Anthony Storr and his vision of creative illness
Author of the article presents the phenomenon of "creative illness" through the prism of the views of the British psychiatrist Anthony Storr. The central issue of this article is the close relationship between genius and mental illness. The experience of "creative illness" (deep mental crisis, "dark night of the soul") was characteristic of many mystics, religious sect leaders and visionaries who created original philosophical and psychological concepts and made discoveries in the field of exact sciences. The author pays special attention to the crises of Freud and Jung, thanks to which visionaries created ideas that changed our perception of man and his culture. Anthony Storr treats them not so much as scientists, but as inspirational gurusUniwersytet w Białymstoku, Instytut Studiów Kulturowych, Zakład Antropologii KulturyBakan, Joel (2013), Dzieciństwo w oblężeniu.
