Lars Maegdefessel, Junya Azuma, Philip S TsaoDepartment of Cardiovascular Medicine, School of Medicine, Stanford University, CA, USAAbstract: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia. The prevalence of AF increases sharply in old age (prevalence approximately 10% among persons 80 years of age and older). The expected risk for ischemic stroke is increased five-fold by the presence of AF, primarily as a result of cardiogenic embolism. Multiple large-scale, randomized trials have been completed or are still underway to find optimal, efficacious, and relatively safe ways to reduce the risk of ischemic stroke and other systemic thromboembolic events related to AF. Antithrombotic strategies are accompanied by serious bleeding complications that threaten patients in need of medical stroke prevention. Treatment regimens for preventing thromboembolism in AF patients range from vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin or coumadins, antiplatelet drugs like aspirin or clopidogrel, to newly developed orally available antithrombotics like the direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran, or the Factor Xa-inhibitor rivaroxaban. The available anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs have different advantages and disadvantages. This review attempts to delineate the specific role of clopidogrel in patients with AF and at risk of stroke, taking into consideration new and ongoing trials in this important field of medical practice. Keywords: clopidogrel, antiplatelet agents, atrial fibrillation, ischemic strok

Working memory capacity: Is there a bilingual advantage?

    No full text
abstract: Previous studies suggest that bilinguals have certain executive function advantages over monolinguals. However, few studies have examined specific working memory (WM) differences between monolinguals and bilinguals using complex span tasks. In the current study, 52 bilingual and 53 monolingual speakers were administered simple and complex WM span tasks, including a backward digit-span task, standard operation span tasks and a non-verbal symmetry span task. WM performance was a strong predictor of performance on other WM tasks, whereas bilingual status was not. Thus, the present study did not find evidence of a bilingual advantage in WM capacity. This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published as Ratiu, Ileana, & Azuma, Tamiko (2015). Douglas College student research essay submitted as partial requirement for GSWS 2101: Gender Today (Fall 2021) course. Faculty sponsor to submit this essay to DOOR: Dr. Jill Fellows. The use of virtual assistants is increasing every day, as a technological tool that is marketed as a necessity to assist in making our modern lives more efficient. These tools are designed to help us with daily tasks such as searching for information, reading emails, writing messages, making calls and scheduling meetings with others. The most popular examples “Siri” or “Alexa” have been created with specific gendered characteristics and behavior as the author points out “virtual assistants are very obviously gendered. Siri and Alexa both have female names”, (Fellows, forthcoming 2022) designed with a personality of submissive and serviceable, as the author mentions “they portray a gender binary dominant-submissive relationship, positioning the user in the dominant position, and they play out subordination as feminine.” (Fellows, forthcoming 2022)Not peer reviewe

When Apollo tasted sushi for the first time. Early examples of the reception of Classics in Japanese comics

    No full text
This paper analyses the first appearance of classical themes in the Japanese manga production. The author offers a general overview of the cultural background in which such works were created and examines how these comics can be read within the local pop-culture. Afterwards, she presents three different mangaka’s approaches to Classics – Osamu Tezuka, Go Nagai and Hideo Azuma – in order to understand the role that the Greco-Roman heritage assumes within this production.

The article introduces the figure of Azuma Shirō (1912-2006) - a Japanese man who participated in the Nanjing massacre and who had been actively contributing to raising awareness of the crimes committed during this period - and the legal proceedings resulting from accusing him of citing an allegedly false story in his book. For seven years Azuma and his lawyers have been trying to prove that the described course of events is true and feasible, but the court ruled in favour of the plaintiff who allegedly committed a violent murder. The author attempts to situate Azuma’s case in the context of the memory of the Nanjing Massacre in Japan, and to analyze the direct consequences of the sentence against the background of Sino-Japanese relations. The work also contains a description of the reception of Azuma's actions in the eyes of the Chinese and Japanese

Aberrant smooth muscle cell (SMC) plasticity has been implicated in a variety of vascular disorders including atherosclerosis, restenosis, and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation. While the pathways governing this process remain unclear, epigenetic regulation by specific microRNAs (miRNAs) has been demonstrated in SMCs. We hypothesized that additional miRNAs might play an important role in determining vascular SMC phenotype. Microarray analysis of miRNAs was performed on human aortic SMCs undergoing phenotypic switching in response to serum withdrawal, and identified 31 significantly regulated entities. We chose the highly conserved candidate miRNA-26a for additional studies. Inhibition of miRNA-26a accelerated SMC differentiation, and also promoted apoptosis, while inhibiting proliferation and migration. Overexpression of miRNA-26a blunted differentiation. As a potential mechanism, we investigated whether miRNA-26a influences TGF-\u3b2-pathway signaling. Dual-luciferase reporter assays demonstrated enhanced SMAD signaling with miRNA-26a inhibition, and the opposite effect with miRNA-26a overexpression in transfected human cells. Furthermore, inhibition of miRNA-26a increased gene expression of SMAD-1 and SMAD-4, while overexpression inhibited SMAD-1. MicroRNA-26a was also found to be downregulated in two mouse models of AAA formation (2.5- to 3.8-fold decrease, P\u2009<\u20090.02) in which enhanced switching from contractile to synthetic phenotype occurs. In summary, miRNA-26a promotes vascular SMC proliferation while inhibiting cellular differentiation and apoptosis, and alters TGF-\u3b2 pathway signaling. MicroRNA-26a represents an important new regulator of SMC biology and a potential therapeutic target in AAA disease.1P50HK083800-01/HK/PHITPO CDC HHS/United States5K08 HL080567-03/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United StatesK08 HL080567/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United StatesK08 HL080567-04/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United StatesK08 HL080567-05/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United StatesK12 HL087746/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United StatesR01 HL077676/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United State

Phylogeography of Littorina brevicula suggests postglacial colonization from south to north along the Japanese Archipelago

    No full text
Littorina brevicula is one of the most common gastropods in the supralittoral zone around Japan. The northernmost population of this species is around Hokkaido and the determinant of this northern limit is likely seawater and air temperature. To reconstruct an evolutionary history of this species, we investigated genetic differentiation among 12 populations (three from Hokkaido, six from Honshu and three from Kyushu) using a mitochondrial DNA marker (partial sequence of the NADH dehydrogenase 6 gene). The haplotype network showed shallow genetic divergence within the species, suggesting a bottleneck followed by population expansion. One major haplotype that occurred in 70.5% of all individuals examined was the most frequent in every population sampled. A second major haplotype was abundant around Kyushu but not found in Hokkaido. This skewed haplotype distribution resulted in significant genetic differentiation along the north-south axis of Japan. The importance of the southern clade, which included the second major haplotype, was supported by population genetic analyses of datasets that excluded either the southern clade or the northern clades. The north-south differentiation remained when datasets that excluded the northern clades were used, but disappeared when datasets that excluded the southern clade were used. The combined evidence of shallow divergence and the north-south population structure suggests that the L. brevicula population around Japan once declined and then expanded and colonized northward. Although the time of population reduction and recolonization could not be precisely estimated, the observation that this species is absent further north in Japan suggests that it would have been unable to survive in northern Japan during the last glacial maximum (LGM) and therefore recolonization likely occurred after the LGM, probably from south to north

    · GLEF and a research team from the University of Washington worked with Washington\u27s Bellevue School District to develop and assess the impact of project-based learning on upper-level courses in high school. · Research suggests that Advanced Placement (AP) courses may focus too much on accelerated content at the expense of deeper conceptual learning. · The number of students taking AP courses has grown, but along with this the number failing has increased. GLEF and the research team tested project-based learning (PBL) to counteract this trend. · Results after two years are promising. Students in the PBL-AP courses are performing as well or better than students in traditional AP courses. · Other education funders are encouraged to use an iterative design process, work with a diverse design team, and bring in partners who can contribute needed expertise and resources
