    The modularty of agreement variation

While dialectal variation is systematic, dependent on hierarchical relations, and occurs within linguistic communities; sociolinguistic agreement variation is arbitrary, linearly determined, and subject to socioeconomic and educational pressures

La nostra proposta explica, sense complicacions addicionals, els problemes clàssics que afecten la sintaxi de les construccions amb Marcatge Diferenciat de l'Objecte (MDO) i amb elevació d'objecte, així com els efectes de la restricció de persona i cas, tant en espanyol com en altres llengües. També analitzem les conseqüències i els reptes que la nostra proposta planteja per explicar el comportament dels clítics en dialectes laïstes en contextos en què els dos arguments interns semblen legitimar-se de maneres formalment independents: un mitjançant el MDO i l'altre gràcies a un clític de datiu. En aquest sentit, demostrem que aquest clític datiu no estableix cap relació de concordança, sinó que és un determinant que s'incorpora, com passa amb els clítics acusatius de tercera persona (Ormazabal i Romero 2013a).In this paper we propose an asymmetrical approach to Case-licensing where, on the one hand, the functional architecture in the verbal system can license at most one DP, and, on the other, only certain DPs require formal licensing. Our proposal straightforwardly explains long-lasting syntactic problems in the syntax of Spanish and other languages concerning Differential Object Marking (DOM), Raising to Subject asymmetries in se constructions, and Person Case Constraint effects. Then, we analyze the consequences and challenges of our proposal for the explanation of the clitic behavior in laísta dialects in contexts where both internal arguments seem to be independently formally licensed, one of them via DOM, and the other by means of a dative clitic. We show that this dative clitic does not establish an agreement relation, but it is an incorporated determiner, as in the case of third person accusative clitics (Ormazabal and Romero 2013a)

    Origin and evolution of lago Yehuin (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina): Results from a geophysical survey

    Lago Yehuin, a WNW-ESE elongated basin located in the outer fold-and-thrust belt of the Fuegian Andes, occupies a compartmented structural depression originated along a segment of the left-lateral Lago Deseado fault system. This paper describes the first geophysical survey performed within the lake. New acquired high-resolution single-channel seismic data, integrated with geological information in the surroundings of the Lago Yehuin, allowed to: (i) produce a complete bathymetric map of the lake, (ii) reconstruct the basement surface of the lake, and (iii) analyze the geometry, distribution, and thickness of the sedimentary infill. Two sub-basins were recognized within Lago Yehuin: A western sub-basin, 7.5 km long, with a maximum depth of 118 m; an eastern sub-basin, 7.2 km long with a maximum depth of 80 m. Both sub-basins are limited by a set of normal faults which overprint NE-verging thrusts. Three seismostratigraphic units have been identified in the seismic records: (1) a lower unit with wedged geometry interpreted as a mass flow deposits; (2) a thick (up to 120 m) intermediate unit of glacio-lacustrine nature and irregularly distributed in the Yehuin basin; (3) a thin (generally <10 m) upper lacustrine unit which drapes the entire basin. Lago Yehuin is considered a Neogene basin generated by strike-slip tectonics that was later affected by glacial and glacio-lacustrine deposition. Interpreted submerged ridge moraines within Lago Yehuin are correlated with onland moraine arcs built by the complete recessional paths of Fuego and Ewan ice lobes. A significant structural control is proposed not only for the formation of Lago Yehuin, but also for the general paths of the northern arms of the Fagnano palaeo-glacier

    Glacial-related morphology and sedimentary setting of a high-latitude lacustrine basin: The Lago Chepelmut (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina)

    Lago Chepelmut is a relatively small lake in size, of ellipsoidal shape, located in the outer fold-and-thrust belt of the Fuegian Andes (southernmost South America). High-resolution single-channel seismic profiles, integrated with geological information in the surrounding area, have allowed to reconstruct for the first time a bathymetric map of the lake and the architecture, distribution and thickness of the sedimentary cover. Two main seismic units were identified in the seismic records: (i) a Lower Unit of glacial nature, likely associated to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and irregularly distributed through the basin, and (ii) an Upper Unit of lacustrine origin which drapes the entire basin. Submerged moraine deposits within the lake were also found from seismic data, and correlated with moraine arcs widespread distributed in the surroundings of the basin. These morphologies represent the recessional deposits left by the Ewan glacier lobe, one of the easternmost fronts of the Tierra del Fuego glaciers during the LGM. The lacustrine sedimentary record shows that the lake level was not constant through the recent history of the lake. Moreover, data analysis has shown that there is also an important structural component that has conditioned the evolution of the basin, in addition to that linked to glacial activity

    Basement structural control in the Magallanes-Malvinas Fold and Thrust Belt, offshore Argentina

    In this study, we examine the external part of the Magallanes-Malvinas Fold and Thrust Belt in offshore areas, including a portion in Tierra del Fuego onshore, in southern South America. Our investigations focus on the interaction between a thin-skinned fold and thrust belt and the basement in that deformation, considering pre-existing structures acting as stress risers and localizing a possible tectonic inversion. The data is composed of around 14,000 km of 2-D multichannel seismic lines and three exploratory wells, used to analyse the anticlines of the fold and thrust belt in the area. The strike of these folds progressively evolves from NW-SE trending in western onshore regions, to WSW-ENE trending in eastern offshore areas. The fold and thrust belt shows a buttressing effect against the Río Chico Arch. The most shortening is seen in the apex of the Río Chico Arch around 67° W, in the coast of Tierra del Fuego, and gradually decreases eastwards in offshore regions. A connection between basement-involved faults and folds offshore is inferred from the analysis of the Géminis and Ciclón anticlines, developed during the N?S last compressional stage of deformation in the late Oligocene/early Miocene. The Géminis anticline is a fault propagation fold with a total shortening of 205 m with a piggyback basin developed over its backlimb. The location and ENE-WSW strike-direction of the fold have been controlled by a basement-involved fault. The Ciclón anticline is a subtle fold trending WNW-ESE developed as a result of the slight tectonic inversion of a negative flower structure.Fil: Ormazabal, Juan Pablo. A neo-derivational approach based on the incorporation of an adpositional head accounts naturally for important generalizations on the distribution of the changes and conforms to the properties of dative variation crosslinguistically

    Combining shallow and deep geophysical information: the Yehuin–Chepelmut Fault Zone in the Magallanes fold and thrust belt (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina)

    The outer Fuegian fold and thrust belt is the deformed sector of the Austral-Magallanes Basin, which underwent a contractional phase since the Late Cretaceous and a strike-slip phase during the Neogene. The area hosts two Neogene basins (Yehuin and Chepelmut) which have been mainly developed by the influence of wrench deformation, and were subsequently modified by glacial activity of the Ewan and Fuego glacier lobes of the Fagnano palaeoglacier. Geophysical surveys using Electrical Resistivity Tomography, onland shallow seismic surveys, and magnetometry, have been combined with outcrop analysis and deep seismic lines to recognize both shallow and intermediate deep structures related to the lacustrine basins. Four sets of faults with different deformation history were involved in the basin genesis. Comparison with the Deseado Fault Zone indicates similarities of the structural features between the two zones. The stress field interpreted as responsible for the origin of the studied basins is analogous to the one in the Deseado valley, located in the western Tierra del Fuego. Therefore, a transcurrent fault zone, here named Yehuin–Chepelmut Fault Zone, is proposed as part of the diffuse boundary between South America and Scotia plates

    The derivation of dative alternations

    Maia Duguine, Susana Huidobro and Nerea Madariaga (eds.)[EN]This paper argues for an updated version of the classical derivational approach to Double Object Constructions (DOCs) and parallel dative construction across languages. We extensively argue that the arguments to postulate a non-derivational approach to dative construction do not hold and that, in fact, such an approach runs into unsolvable problems. We argue that the structural alternation is triggered by Preposition (applicative) incorporation and Case/Agreement-relational considerations. We maintain a unified analysis of dative and PP constructions at the level of argument structure, while deriving the structural and Case differences as a consequence of the incorporation of P and its modification of the Case requirements. Combined with a non-symmetric theory of Case, this approach yields the right results for most of the properties traditionally associated to dative constructions. An obvious advantage of our approach with respect to both classical transformational approaches and polysemy analyses, is that it can account in a neat way for the “mixed” behavior of the applied and the second objects in dative constructions with regard to “direct object”-hood, without the need for any stipulative move, completely separating Case relations from argument structure.Basque Government (GIC07/144-IT-210-07, HM2008-1-10), the Spanish Government’s Ministry of Science and Development (FFI2008-04786
