    No full text
This essay comes to enrich the editorial fortune and the critical reception of the portuguese poet living in the Spanish court Juan de Matos Fragoso (Alvito, 1609-Madrid, 1689). More studied as a dramatic author, his lyrical side has been relegated despite its considerable entity. When dealing with La Atalanta, we rescue, in the first place, a text that has not been reissued or attended to since its printing in 1662. On the other hand, we provide its textual and receptional history as well as the rhetorical keys that could serve for its general contextualization in the canon of the mythological fable genre: attenuated gongorism, theatricality and renewed moralization.

    No full text
In 1501, Mario Equicola completed the Perigynaecon, the only philogynist work that the humanist from Alvito composed in his lifetime. This treatise was conceived with a clear instrumental purpose, as the author wished to enter the service of Isabella d’Este, marquise consort of Mantua. Precisely for this reason, behind each of the topics Equicola presents and behind each of the exemplary women he mentions to extol the value of women throughout history, it is possible to establish more or less clear similarities with the problems Isabella had to face in her first decade at the court of Mantua. In this article I analyse the role that Veturia plays within the cast of exemplary women of the Perigynaecon and delve into some of the reasons that might have led Equicola to choose to include Coriolanus’ mother among the women he alludes to in his treatise.

Modelling as Communication: the use of 3D models for developing architectural ideas

    No full text
Regardless of its size or scope, the preparation of an Architectural Project, is perfectly well defined. The first phase of conception, drawn up according to the statement of intentions provided by the Owner of the Work (preliminary Program), usually is the only one in the whole process which draws on the abilities of the Author of the Project. Thus, with the aim of speeding up this process, an experimental model which can be used as a tool for negotiation between stakeholders in a project of Architecture has been developed. This implies giving priority to the graphic aspects of the model, such as visualisation, texturing, manipulation and automatic data updating. What is left to be developed is the desire to associate sensorial information to these scenic “ models sound, smell and time ” and to study the means of converting the results of this informal communication into documents that may come to be used in the subsequent phases of the Architectural Project

Nano-bio interactions of titanium dioxide nanomaterials in the intestinal moiety after simulated digestion in vitro

    No full text
The exponential development of nanomaterials (NMs) contrasts with insufficient risk assessment for human health and the environment, leading to concerns for public health. Their potential to improve many products and processes, namely in agriculture, food and feed industry, has led to increased use of NMs, such as titanium dioxide nanomaterials (TiO2). In fact, oral exposure to TiO2 may occur either directly, through the consumption of products/pharmaceuticals containing NMs, or indirectly, through the ingestion of food/water contaminated due to environmental accumulation. Therefore, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) appears to be a probable route of exposure to NMs and may lead to systemic exposure if the body barriers are surpassed. Since NMs primary physicochemical properties may define nano-bio interactions1, NMs with the same chemistry but with different shape, diameter, length, surface charge or functionalization may lead to different toxicities. Conversely, since the GIT is chemically and physically complex, ingested NMs will pass through different environments prior to their intestinal uptake, affecting their physicochemical properties, so that these secondary physicochemical properties should be considered while evaluating their safety in the food chain. The aim of this work was to investigate the nano-bio interactions of three TiO2 (NM-102, NM-103, NM-105, from Joint Research Centre, Ispra) in the context of intestinal tract and digestion processes. As alternative to animal testing, an in vitro harmonized digestion method2 was used for simulating the human digestion of NMs and their characteristics were studied in acellular and intestinal (Caco-2) cells context. The NMs were characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS, for size distribution), electrophoretic light scattering (zeta potential), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for morphological characterization and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) for elemental chemical analysis. TiO2 samples were labelled directly with a fluorescent probe and used for uptake studies with confocal microscopy (CM). In parallel, a co-culture model of Caco-2 with mucous-secreting HT29-MTX was initiated and exposed to TiO2 to ascertain epithelial barrier translocation. The results did not show major differences in the NMs’ pH, osmolality, charge signal or mean size, except for NM-103. TEM and TEM –EDS analysis showed that it is possible to identify primary particles after digestion process and preliminary CM results suggest that some of the tested TiO2 nanomaterials can be uptake by the cells, suggestive of potential subcellular effects that warrant further investigation.

    No full text
This research, of a bibliographic and documentary nature, has as its core a reconsideration on how it has been thought Drummond's child work within the specialized university community in an attempt to contribute to the studies that have been done on the literary production of this author. Therefore, it proposes a critical reading of five drummondian works made for the childhood: Elephant (1983), The color of each (1996a), The password of the world (1996b), Drummond Boy (2012) and History of Two Loves (1985). Among these, only the last book, published by Record, was intentionally written for the children, since the first was extracted from The rose of the people (1945) and editorially readdressed, while the others were organized in anthologies that were illustrated by the same publisher (except for Drummond Boy, which was published by Companhia das Letras). Considering such data, and based on the childhood thematic relevance throughout the Drummond's work, this research attempts to track childhood representations noticed by means of literary production and reading practices contained in the books referred above, either through the text itself, or by the reading protocols conformed by the editorial procedures. To this end, the research will be subsidized by the studies of: a) Peter Hunt, Regina Zilberman, Mônica Menezes and Vera Teixeira de Aguiar, about children's literature; b) Roger Chartier, on the conceptual notions of practice, representation, interpretation community, ownership and reading protocol; c) Philippe Ariès, Neil Postman e Jens Qvortrup about childhood social conception; d) and Antonio Carlos Secchin, Alcides Vilaça among other critics, concerning childhood in the literary production of Carlos Drummond de AndradeEsta pesquisa, de cunho bibliográfico-documental, tem como fulcro uma reconsideração de como se tem pensado a obra infantil drummondiana no seio da comunidade universitária especializada, na tentativa de contribuir com os estudos que se têm realizado sobre a produção literária do autor.

The guideline of the work described here is the "male homosociability" and "urban culture of Mediterranean tradition", as a cosmological field of social practices at the metropolitan peripheral area of Grande Florianópolis, at Santa Catarina state. The text is supported by anthropological symbolic analysis of urbanization and migration processes, which constituted themselves as social practices based on a Mediterranean moral field that defines daily life shape at some communities characterized by accelerated urban growth and demographic concentration of immigrant populations. The main analysis data of social interactions contexts were collected by ethnographic method of research and analyzed in light of anthropological literature about complex societies and urban contexts, cosmology and Mediterranean people of Spain, Portugal, Greece, Egypt, Cyprus and Algeria. Ethnographic experience focused on daily contact between the researcher and some social paths of two immigrant "family leaders", deriving from agricultural tradition, which had been rooted in one of the cities of the searched area. The main arguments of the thesis questioned the aspects that characterized some Brazilian culture singularities, considering social interaction contexts exclusively guided by the original Mediterranean tradition, pondering on what it is assumed to be "originally Brazilian"

Abstract publicado em: Environ Mol Mutagen. 2021;62(S1):42 (P11). https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/em.22458The use of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) as food additive and in food packaging demands a thorough assessment of their potential risk for human health, specifically with regard to gastrointestinal tract. Using intestinal cells, we analyzed the mechanisms by which digested TiO2-NPs (NM-102, NM-103 and NM-105, JRC repository) translocate through the intestinal epithelium layer, as compared to non-digested particles. Human digestion of TiO2-NPs was simulated using the INFOGEST in vitro harmonized digestion method. Caco-2 cells were grown as polarized cell monolayer for exposure and differentiation was evaluated by TEER. The translocation of TiO2-NPs, tagged with alizarin red, through the cell barrier was analysed by confocal microscopy, using colocalization with antibodies against specific endosomal compartments. The internalization of the TiO2-NPs was confirmed for the three TiO2-NPs tested, both before and after digestion simulation. The smallest TiO2-NPs were internalized into EEA1-positive early- endosomes and accumulated in late endosomes (Rab7), with only a small fraction following the degradative pathway to the lysosome (LAMP1). The data suggested that at least part of the TiO2-NPs could be redirected to the secretory pathway. Consistently, fluorescence passing from the apical to the basolateral chamber was observed, without disruption of the intestinal barrier function. The changes in cell function or signal transduction pathways are being studied and possible consequences to human gastrointestinal tract arediscussed. We thank the support from P. Alvito, C. Martins and R.
