This report is an examination conducted by Per Jonsson, a student at the University of Karlstad. The examination includes 22.5 credits and it’s a compulsory part in the Bachelor of Science in mechanical Engineering topic. The company Trollspeed, manufactures high-performance racing engines used by racing teams at the elite level. Big turbochargers and related equipment are assembled together with custom built exhaust manifolds to achieve maximum power output. Together, these parts contribute to a high mass and have to be braced up.     Today’s bracing solotion lead to inevitable tension effects within the manifold that makes cracking occur. This work is about developing a new bracing solution that can handle higher tensions.   The project is divided into two parts. The first part covers the development of a measurement tool for analyzing motion and force effects within the manifold. The development of the gauge resulted in a measurement scale with pointers for the visualization of movements and mounted load cells for analyzing the impact force. This gauge is the basis for the project's second part that covers finding a solution for a new bracing of the manifold.      The selection of strut is based on the measurement results that shows analyzes of motion and force effects. The brace resulted in a M6 turnbuckle.     The installation of this strut is an important element to improve the quality of the manifold. The engine has to be warmed up at least five times before mounting the strut and the manifold weight must be pretensioned using a turnbuckle with ¾ turns turning at that

Wrist and thumb joint postures and motions - measurements using electrogoniometry and EMG

    No full text
Correct measurements of the joints’ extreme postures, velocity and repetitiveness are important for studies of the origin of musculoskeletal disorders. Posture measurements of wrist and thumb joints may also provide insights into input device designs that may reduce effort and/or facilitate productivity. Electrogoniometry offers a relatively simple and objective way to measure joint postures and motions. The expectation is that electrogoniometric instruments will provide better measures of postures and movements than the more subjective methods such as self-reporting or observation. In the first part of this thesis, two wrist goniometer systems were evaluated. The systems differed in how the goniometers were engineered and positioned over wrist and forearm. One system was integrated into a fingerless glove and floated over the forearm whereas the other system was mounted directly over the wrist. ”True” wrist positions were established with the aid of a fixture that allowed the positioning of the wrist in known angles. The “Crosstalk” – when movement in one plane artificially causes movement to be measured in another movement plane, “offset” – where the measured movement axes differ or are offset from the actual movement axes, and “range of motion” – the difference between the actual and measured range of motion of the joint, were compared. The measurement errors were substantial with both systems for simple, standardized wrist postures. However, the system with the transducers built-in in the fingerless glove had considerably less crosstalk errors and proved to have less between-subject differences. The similarities and differences in the measurement errors could be attributed to differences in systems design and methods to improve the accuracy of wrist posture measurement were provided. In the second part of this thesis, the accuracy and feasibility of measuring thumb postures and movements with a simple thumb-mounted electrogoniometer were evaluated. The ”true” thumb positions were established and defined using a manual goniometer. The posture measurement error of the thumb-based electrogoniometer was small relative to the manual goniometer, and on average, less than 5 degrees. A follow-up study determined whether this simple thumb-mounted goniometer could provide meaningful information on thumb posture during mobile phone use. When measuring thumb posture during SMS messaging, thumb posture was shown to be affected by the size of the mobile phone and differences in movement speeds were seen between the two movement axes of the thumb. Thumb movements in abduction/adduction were almost twice as fast as those in flexion/extension. It was also established that the thumb worked near the extreme ranges of motion – which is known to contribute to musculoskeletal disorders. Finally, this thesis determined whether measurements with a simple, thumb mounted electrogoniometer could be used in place of more complicated measures of muscle activity (EMG) for assessing musculoskeletal load during mobile phone use. Sophisticated correlation analyses of these different methods showed that only during very limited conditions could thumb goniometry be used in lieu of EMG measurements to assess musculoskeletal loads. Measurements indicated that the thumb's muscle activity most often complemented rather than replaced the simple goniometric measures of the thumb

Are Pixel Intensities Proportional To Radar Cross Section In SAR Images?

    No full text
Radar cross section has long been the measurement quantity of choice to describe the radar reflectivity of point targets in calibrated synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Derived quantities like the backscatter coefficient are equally in wide-spread use to radiometrically describe, in scientific applications often even more relevant, distributed targets. This paper now raises the question if radar cross section (RCS) really is the best choice to link pixel intensities or digital numbers to a physical unit. In fact, it is shown that RCS actually is not a good choice out of two major reasons, both of which result from the RCS being frequency dependent. The authors propose to distinguish the radar cross section, a body property, from the actual radiometric measurement quantity in SAR images by introducing the dedicated term equivalent RCS. Additionally, the implications for measurements and radiometric calibration are described

Measuring Gambling Reinforcers, Over Consumption and Fallacies: The Psychometric Properties and Predictive Validity of the Jonsson-Abbott Scale

    No full text
Traditionally, gambling and problem gambling research relies on cross-sectional and retrospective designs. This has compromised identification of temporal relationships and causal inference. To overcome these problems a new questionnaire, the Jonsson-Abbott Scale (JAS), was developed and used in a large, prospective, general population study, The Swedish Longitudinal Gambling Study (Swelogs). The JAS has 11 items and seeks to identify early indicators, examine relationships between indicators and assess their capacity to predict future problem progression. The aims of the study were to examine psychometric properties of the JAS (internal consistency and dimensionality) and predictive validity with respect to increased gambling risk and problem gambling onset. The results are based on repeated interviews with 3818 participants. The response rate from the initial baseline wave was 74%. The original sample consisted of a random, stratified selection from the Swedish population register aged between 16 and 84. The results indicate an acceptable fit of a three-factor solution in a confirmatory factor analysis with ‘Over consumption,’ ‘Gambling fallacies,’ and ‘Reinforcers’ as factors. Reinforcers, Over consumption and Gambling fallacies were significant predictors of gambling risk potential and Gambling fallacies and Over consumption were significant predictors of problem gambling onset (incident cases) at 12 month follow up. When controlled for risk potential measured at baseline, the predictor Over consumption was not significant for gambling risk potential at follow up. For incident cases, Gambling fallacies and Over consumption remained significant when controlled for risk potential. Implications of the results for the development of problem gambling, early detection, prevention, and future research are discussed
