Systematizing and Hypersystematizing Persons from the Autistic Spectrum in the Invention Theory “if-and-then” Simon Baron-Cohen – Educational Contexts

    No full text
Precyzja i skłonność do klasyfikowania u takich osób wynika z potrzeby zrozumienia otaczającej rzeczywistości w procesie odmiennej preferencji do uczenia się. Badacz przeformułował sposób rozumienia autystycznego spektrum w naukach społecznych i humanistycznych, osadzając go w koncepcji neuroróżnorodności. The article is based on the latest theory of human inventiveness by Simon Baron- -Cohen (2021). The author is convinced that people on the autism spectrum have specialized minds that systematize. He calls them “born pattern seekers”. They create the foundations of human civilization, demonstrating a “love of logic” (Baron-Cohen, 2021, p. 15). The precision and tendency to classify demonstrated by such people results from the need to understand the surrounding reality in the process of different preferences for learning. The researcher reformulated the understanding of the autism spectrum in social sciences and humanities, embedding it in the concept of neurodiversity. Simon Baron-Cohen initiated a debate on changing the way of thinking about autism – a transition from the medical-diagnostic understanding of autism as a disorder or disability to understanding it as a specialized uniqueness in the way of interpreting reality, noticeable in people on the autism [email protected] Doktorantka Szkoły Doktorskiej Akademii Ignatianum w KrakowieBaron-Cohen, S. Necessary Life’s Solutions According to Simon Conway Morris

    No full text
Dokładna analiza tych skamieniałości początkowo doprowadziła go do wniosków podobnych do wniosków Stephena Jay Goulda – przede wszystkim o doniosłej roli przypadku w procesie ewolucji życia. Z czasem jednak Simon Conway Morris zmienił swoje zdanie na całkiem przeciwne, czemu daje wyraz w książce Life’s Solution: Inevitable Humans in a Lonely Universe. The article concerns necessary life’s solutions according to Simon Conway Morris (born 1951), a British paleontologist who is famous in scientific circles thank to his research on fossils of Burgess Shale. Initially, close analysis led him to the same conclusions as Stephen Jay Gould – especially about the significant role of chance in the process of life’s evolution. Later, however, Simon Conway Morris radically changed his mind which is expressed in his book Life’s Solution: Inevitable Humans in a Lonely Universe. He believes that, in fact, nature is highly limited in its choices and that is the reason of necessity of many solutions. The problem of solutions in evolution of life is interesting because of the limited number of predictions formulated by the theory of evolution which is accepted by biologists. Theory of evolution assumes the randomness of evolutionary process. I will try to assess whether opposite stance of the author of Life’s Solution is a real alternative to theory of evolution. I want to present solutions which, according to Simon Conway Morris, are necessary and to show on what ground he rests his belief. He divides such solutions to molecular, necessary due to physical properties of substances, and environmental, being a response to adaptative needs. It will be substantiated by numerous examples from the living world, including both contemporary and extinct organisms. My purpose is also to present predictions given by the author of Life’s Solution as to the results of future evolution of living things, and to assess their validity

Peregrin Simon as a Representative of the "Wanderers" Arriving to the Industrialized Part of Upper Silesia at the Turn of the 18th and 19th Centuries

    No full text
Szymon). Komplikuje to poszukiwanie informacji o noszących takie nazwiska postaciach. The article describes the life of Peregryn Simon (1737–1825). His history represents the intricate fate of a large number of Europeans who took part in Frederick's colonization of Upper Silesia. The rapidly developing industry in the north-eastern part of Silesia at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries attracted determined people. Many of them changed their original profession many times, and their journeys to places where industry was developing were often of multi-stage character. Both the first name and last name of the hero of the article, were recorded in documents in various ways. The original forms of spelling, as found in the documents are provided in excerpts of the text referring to them. The infrequent occurrence of the firstname was often confused with the common last name Simon (Polish equivalent: Szymon). This complicates the search for information about individuals with such names. Despite the lack of full biographical data, the research conducted by the author showed that Peregrin Simon changed his profession and place of residence many times. In addition, one of the documents indicates that he was an employee appreciated by the employer, which was the Mining Office in Tarnowskie Góry. The study of the fate of "wanderers", such as the hero of the article, is a contribution to the history of the Frederician colonization of Upper Silesia

The subject of the article is the figure of Simon Magus, presented in the canonical Acts of the Apostles, also known from other early Christian sources as pregnostic. In the first part, the author presents pericope 8, 4–25 in the literary context of the book, the history of research related to its editing, and then attempts to answer the extent to which Luke's approach is historical. The second part of the article shows the cultural context of the narrative in Acts 8: 4–25, the religious conditions of the inhabitants of the city of Samaria (Sebaste), their attachment to magic, and against this background the figure of Simon Magus. The subject of his interest is also ancient magic that is in opposition to religion and the tensions that arise between it and the early Christian understanding of miracles (signs) and the preached Gospel of Jesus Christ. Summing up, it shows the importance of Simon Magus from Luke's message for the second generation of Christians (addressees of the Acts) and the performative nature of his narrative.

    Syntactic co-activation in natural reading

Recent evidence suggests that bilingual individuals co-activate the syntactic rules of both languages. However, the extent to which syntactic co-activation occurs during natural reading is currently unknown. Here, we measured the eye movements of Welsh-English bilinguals as they read English sentences. We also tested a control group of English monolinguals. Target words were manipulated to create nonwords that were consistent or inconsistent with the rules of Welsh soft mutation (a morphosyntactic process that alters the initial consonant of words). Nonwords were only visible in parafoveal preview, and a direct fixation triggered the presentation of the normal English word. Linear mixed effects analyses revealed a robust parafoveal preview benefit for identity previews (television) compared with mutated (delevision) and aberrant previews (belevision), and a parafoveal-on-foveal effect in our bilingual, but not our monolingual, sample. Bilingual readers’ sentence reanalysis was affected by the implicit Welsh mutation, but only in contexts that would elicit a mutation in Welsh. Our findings suggest that morphosyntactic rules are co-activated during natural reading, however further investigations are needed to evaluate the robustness of this effect

On the impact of Citizen Science-derived data quality on deep learning based classification in marine images

    Get PDF
The evaluation of large amounts of digital image data is of growing importance for biology, including for the exploration and monitoring of marine habitats. However, only a tiny percentage of the image data collected is evaluated by marine biologists who manually interpret and annotate the image contents, which can be slow and laborious. In order to overcome the bottleneck in image annotation, two strategies are increasingly proposed: “citizen science” and “machine learning”. In this study, we investigated how the combination of citizen science, to detect objects, and machine learning, to classify megafauna, could be used to automate annotation of underwater images. For this purpose, multiple large data sets of citizen science annotations with different degrees of common errors and inaccuracies observed in citizen science data were simulated by modifying “gold standard” annotations done by an experienced marine biologist. The parameters of the simulation were determined on the basis of two citizen science experiments. It allowed us to analyze the relationship between the outcome of a citizen science study and the quality of the classifications of a deep learning megafauna classifier. The results show great potential for combining citizen science with machine learning, provided that the participants are informed precisely about the annotation protocol. Inaccuracies in the position of the annotation had the most substantial influence on the classification accuracy, whereas the size of the marking and false positive detections had a smaller influence.</p
