No full textThis is a biography of Robert Jones, 1857-1933. He was a surgeon, and is credited
with bringing orthopaedics from its quack past into its scientific present. This work
explores Jones’ life and times, and examines whether he is entitled to the epithet
‘father of orthopaedics’.
It looks at the history of bonesetting, the influences on Jones’ development
and medical training, and some key moments in his career – notably his involvement
in the building of the Manchester Ship Canal, the planning of Heswall Children’s
Hospital, and the Great War. It argues that although there are other medical men
who could have been credited with fathering orthopaedics, he is indeed the father –
at least of orthopaedics in Britain, if not internationally.
This version of Jones’ life begins with something of his biographer’s journey,
before it explores what and who influenced Jones, and in turn what his legacy has
been to the medical profession.
The accompanying Critical Commentary explores whether or not it is possible
to offer a definition of biography as a genre in the light of its history and purpose. It
examines critical views, considers the mythology that grows up around historical
figures, and also explains the rationale for the structure chosen for organising the
material presented in this new biography of Robert Jones, Live and Limbs: Re-membering Robert Jones

Lebensspuren of the Bathyal Mid-Atlantic Ridge
Get PDFThe extent of megafaunal bioturbation was characterised at flat sedimented sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) at 2500 m depth. This study investigated the properties of and spatial variation in surficial bioturbation at the MAR. Lebensspuren assemblages were assessed at four superstations either side of the MAR and in two different surface productivity regimes, north and south of the sub-polar front. High-definition ROV videos from these superstations were used to quantify area and abundance of 58 lebensspuren types. Lebensspuren area was lowest at the SW with 4.12% lebensspuren coverage and the SE & NW had the greatest area coverage of lebensspuren (9.69% for both). All stations except the SW were dominated by epifaunal, particularly track-style, lebensspuren. Infaunal mounds were more significant in the southern superstations, particularly in the SW. In terms of lebensspuren assemblage composition, all superstations were significantly different from one another, which directly corresponded with the composition of lebensspuren-forming epifauna. Lebensspuren assemblages appeared to have been primarily influenced by local-scale environmental variation and were independent of detrital flux. This investigation presented a novel relationship between lebensspuren and faunal density that conflicted with the traditionally held view of inverse proportionality and suggests that, at the MAR, megafaunal reworking was not the only significant control on lebensspuren assemblages
L-selectin and Cd34 are expressed by human stromal keratocytes
No full textPurpose: To identify the expression of CD34 and its' respective ligand L-selectin in human corneal stroma. Methods: 12 human corneas (5 fresh corneas and 7 eye bank corneas) were examined for the expression of CD34 and L-selectin using immunohistochemistry methods. Antigens were identified using three different clones of monoclonal antibodies to Human CD34 and two different clones of antibodies to L-selectin. Isotype matched antibodies to irrelevant antigens were used on specimens as negative controls. Separate samples of whole corneal stroma were homogenised and processed for Western Blotting. Protein bands for CD34 and L-selectin were identified using monoclonal antibodies on the prepared Western blots. Results: In all specimens CD34 and L-selectin expression was identified on keratocytes on histological specimens. Western blotting for CD34 showed a 110 kDa positive band which corresponded to the molecular weight of CD34. Conclusion: The results show the novel finding that both CD34 and L-selectin adhesion molecules are expressed on human keratocytes. This result indicates that interactions between these molecules may contribute to the adhesion of corneal keratocytes to the corneal stromal extracellular matrix
