Reader in the History of Aphasia
Eling, P. Reader in the history of aphasia : from Franz Gall to Norman Geschwind, 1994
Series: Amsterdam studies in the theory and history of linguistic science. Series II, Classics in psycholinguistics; v. 4.
The study of language and the brain is heavily dependent on the work of the early aphasiologists, and those wanting to get acquainted with the discipline will come across frequent references to these classic authors. This collection brings together seminal publications by 19th- and 20th-century neurologists concerned with the relationship between language and the brain. In selecting texts the emphasis was on those parts that deal explicitly with the opinion of an author on language processes as revealed by aphasic phenomena. All texts are presented in English (many of them translated for the first time) and preceded by in-depth introductions by present-day specialists in the field. - Publisherhttps://digitalcommons.rockefeller.edu/jason-brown-library/1094/thumbnail.jp

Achmad Asrori al-Ishaqy.
ABSTRACT:
The internet is a medium of information which is now estimated to be able to dynamize human life. The rapid development of the internet gave birth to a new life system or what is called the virtual world. YouTube is one of the social media that is widely used by today`s society. It is proven that YouTube is the largest video creation and sharing platform in the world. Eling Gusti is the name of a YouTube channel in which it presents content in the form of recitation of KH. Achmad Asrori alIshaqy. The content that presents the recorded sound of this great mursyid is not an official license because there are regulations regarding the publication of sounds and images related to KH. Achmad Asrori al-Ishaqy. Official publications only use radio media, but the development of information technology makes people now more interested in online media so that the main source is shifted to the second source, namely YouTube. The existence of the recording circulating on social media, especially YouTube, has generated various responses from KH. Achmad Asrori al-Ishaqy 's followers on the channel by the real world and Eling Gusti. This work uses a form of field research (field research) with a virtual ethnographic approach. Virtual ethnography is used to reveal the culture and artifacts of the online community. This study makes the teachings of Sufism KH. Achmad Asrori al-Ishaqy chose the Eling Gusti channel as a community on the Internet and YouTube as the cyber media to use, recording his voice as a cultural artifact. This paper focuses on the reaction of Internet users to these cultural artifacts, but before the author analyzes the reaction, the author also analyzes the content of this channel. On the other hand, in the analysis, qualitative descriptive statistics and AMS (Siber Media Analysis) were used to analyze the acquired data. After going through the analytical process, it leads to two conclusions that answer the problem formulation. That is: 1. Teachings of Sufism KH. Achmad Asrori al Ishaqy on the Eling Gusti Canal has a pattern of Amari Sufism and is directed to the practice of believers in the Qadiriyya-wan-Naqsabandiyah-al Ottoman community, 2. Netizens' responses to the contents of the video vary, but in general netizens accept positively what has been said. explained in the video. 3. There are pro and con responses, both addressed to channel creators and to KH. Achmad Asrori alIshaqy. On the other hand, videos, including exercises and diplomas, have received a lot of positive feedback from internet users. Each video exercise or diploma is designed to provide encouragement and solutions to problems that the community often faces. But overall, most people aim to meet their needs from the outside, not mentally.

Stability Analysis of a Laval Rotor on Hydrodynamic Bearings by Numerical Continuation: Investigating the influence of rotor flexibility, rotor damping and external oil pressure on the rotordynamic behaviour
Self-excited vibrations in Laval rotors supported by hydrodynamic bearings, know as oil whirl, induce friction losses and noise, or may even damage the system. This transient dynamic behaviour is caused by the stable and unstable equilibria in the system. To study this phenomenon, this research uses numerical continuation. This method determines the equilibria in the system, their stability and the bifurcations into other equilibria. The sensitivity of these properties with respect to the parameters of the system are studied. The parameters under consideration are the system geometry, rotor stiffness, rotor damping and external oil supply. For this purpose analytic models with the use of short bearing theory and Guembel boundary conditions are made of a rigid, flexible and damped rotor. It extends the results from literature beyond the complications in the model due to the use of numerical continuation, which others did not acknowledge. The novel contribution of the rotor including the damping of the shaft showed to be essential to detect the same dynamic behaviour seen by experimental results from literature. With the addition of the oil feed pressure, the results are strongly improved and are shown to predict the dynamic behaviour of a high speed Laval rotor with reasonable accuracy.Mechanical, Maritime and Materials EngineeringPrecision and Microsystems EngineeringEngineering Mechanic
Towards robust design optimization of automotive turbocharger rotor-bearing systems
In the competitive automotive market, the performance of turbochargers is constantly being pushed towards their theoretical optimum. One of the key components of the turbocharger is the rotor-bearing system, which determines the friction losses and noise output and furthermore affects the overall turbocharger efficiency, reliability and cost. In order to fulfil the demands of the automotive market, developing methods to optimize the rotor-bearing system is the focus of this study, where particular attention is paid to taking into account the product-to-product variations that are inevitable in cost-effective mass-produced parts, as well as the variations in turbocharger operating conditions.First, a model of the rotor-bearing system was developed to predict the rotordynamic response over the operating range. The model is constructed in a step-by-step fashion, starting with a simple test case: a Laval rotor supported by plain journal bearings. As the behavior of the rotor-bearing system varies over its rotation speed range, run-up simulations were performed by a time-transient multi-physical model. In this model, several sub-models are coupled: a rotordynamic sub-model, a thermo-hydrodynamic submodel and a thermal network model. Once a satisfactory correlation was found between numerical simulation results and measurement results, the test case progressed to a Laval rotor with floating ring bearings instead of plain journal bearings. Correspondingly, the bearing model was extended to include the dynamics of the floating ring and its two oil films. The resulting run-ups showed a response consisting of a critical speed, an oil whirl and an oil whip. Analysis of a turbocharger rotor-bearing system was subsequently performed, showing a more complex response, consisting of multiple critical speeds and the co-existence of sub-synchronous whirling modes. The effect of the rotor-bearing operating conditions, unbalance configuration, the thrust bearing and the bearing cylindricity were investigated. Most of the trends are correctly predicted by the model, however the correlation between measurement results and simulation results was clearly inferior to the case of the Laval rotor, most likely due to the uncertainties in the actual turbocharger geometry and the actual unbalance distribution.Lastly, an optimization of a Laval rotor-bearing system was performed. The resulting robust optimum design ensures optimum rotor-bearing performance, even at the most severe operating conditions and even if all manufacturing tolerances represent the worst case scenario. Particularly the uncertainties in rotor unbalance and oil supply temperature were found to have a significant influence on the optimum design.<br/
The Cognitive Deficits Associated with Second-Hand Smoking
Exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS), also known as “passive smoking,” refers to a situation where a non-smoker inhales another person’s smoke either by sidestream or by mainstream exposure to tobacco smoke. Previous research has suggested that not only is prolonged exposure to SHS associated with a range of health-related problems similar to those found in smokers (1, 2) but is also linked to detrimental effects upon cognitive performance in children, adolescents, and adults. For example, children exposed to SHS show reduced vocabulary and reasoning skills when compared with non-exposed children (3) as well as more general cognitive and intellectual deficits (4). More recently, research using serum cotinine as a biomarker of exposure to SHS found that higher levels of serum cotinine were associated with significant reductions in performance in reading, mathematics, and visual and spatial abilities in children and adolescents (5) indicating that higher levels of SHS exposure is associated with poorer cognitive performance. In adults, exposure to SHS in those who had no history of smoking showed significantly reduced performance in processing speed (how quickly one can process information and perform tasks) and executive function (which includes the ability to organize memory, cognitive flexibility, and problem-solving ability) when compared with non-exposed, never smokers (6, 7). In addition, never smokers who lived with smokers for several decades showed a 30% increase in their risk of dementia (8). Recent work has also revealed everyday memory impairments in never smokers with a history of living with smokers for several years; for example, deficits in everyday prospective memory (memory for future actions), such as remembering to carry out everyday activities, keeping appointments with others, or remembering to post a letter on time (7, 9). What is less clear is the mechanism by which SHS might compromise cognitive performance
Modeling and Experimental Validation of a Laval Rotor on Plain Journal- and Turbocharger Floating Ring Bearings - The Behavior of High Speed Rotors on Fluid Film Bearings
The first part of this thesis elaborates on two numerical models of different levels of comprehensiveness of a Laval rotor on plain journal bearings. These models are compared to an experiment, capable of rotating at 60 krpm, also devised in this research. Reasonable correlation in terms of whirl and whip behavior has been found. In the second part of the research a floating ring bearing model is developed. As this model is too expensive it is simplified subsequently. Next, the simplified bearing model is coupled to a rotor. The results are compared with an experiment capable of running at speeds up to 200 krpm.Precision and Microsystems EngineeringMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin
Global Robust Optimization of Computationally Expensive Systems: A Lavel Rotor Suspended by Fluid Film Bearings
Kriging based methods enable the deterministic and robust optimization of computationally expensive systems. With a limited amount of function evaluations the optima are found in an iterative process with expected improvement as infill sampling criteria. Outputs of computer models can be stochastic and/or the models do not always succeed to perform the analysis. For the latter case, a problem is said to be affect by a hidden constraint. Regression Kriging can be included in the methods to deal with the stochastic model outputs. A new method is introduced to handle the hidden constraint in both deterministic and robust optimization. The methods are used to optimize a validated model of a Laval rotor suspended by plain journal bearings. To capture the non-linear behaviour of the self-excited vibrations, a computationally expensive time-transient run-up analysis needs to be performed. The output of this model is stochastic and the model fails to perform a run-up for some combinations of model inputs. The most influential control variables and uncertainties are indicated with an efficient global sensitivity study and used to optimize the system. With the extension of the deterministic and robust optimization, the optima are successfully obtained and can be compared.Mechanical, Maritime and Materials EngineeringPrecision and Microsystems Engineering (PME)Engineering Mechanic
GARAP KENDHANGAN MATUT ADEGAN KLANA TOPENG DALANG KLATEN
This art thesis presents, describes and analyzes the work of the musical instruments from the village style. The material taken is the accompaniment of the Klana Topeng Dalang Klaten scene, the gending’s: Jengkrik Genggong, Liwung Nem, Bendrong, Genjong, Eling-eling, Kebogiro Tlutur, Ayak-ayakan, Sampak Manyura. Two problems were raised (1) how to work on the strings? (2) why did the repertoire of the repertoire become one unit? The two problems are studied according to the concept of working on, the concept of gait gait, the concept of pamijen and the concept of dynamics. The data were collected through literature study, interviews, and observations. The next stage of cultivation, which is carried out in the form of independent and collective training, is then presented for further description and analysis. The analysis and descriptions were carried out in the form of working on repertoire and kendhangan. In addition to this, the author tries to gather information related to the Klaten puppeteer mask. The analysis related to the gending shows that, Klana's scene is in transition between the sanga pathet and the manyura pathet. The analysis and description of Klana's gait drums shows that these are the gaiters. The results of the description of the gending show that the work is unique, namely working on the wiled rhythm on Eling-eling ladrang. The results of the presentation, description and analysis of the Klana scene that the author presents, the writer hopes that these works can continue to be preserved by the next generation
On the stiffness of linear roller bearings: On the stiffness of linear roller bearings
This thesis creates and validate a model for predicting the static stiffness of a linear crossed roller bearing as a function of its key design variables within a range of 20%. Linear crossed roller bearings play an essential role in the high-tech industry, this kind of bearing is used for precision applications such as microscopes, optical systems, and semiconductor production equipment. The performance of all these systems is related to the ability to produce and control a certain motion of a body. Bearings facilitate this motion, they are designed such that the resistance in the direction of movement is minimal. Generally, in all other directions, the bearing should be as stiff as possible as a high bearing stiffness is beneficial for controlling the motion. Stiffness is beneficial as it contributes to achieving a high control bandwidth and minimizes sensitivity to external forces or vibrations. Mechatronic systems have to meet very strict targets in terms of positioning accuracy and settling times. The dynamics of mechatronic systems is dominantly dependent on the performance of their bearings. Nowadays, the performance of a machine is predicted before building the physical machine through virtual prototyping. Virtual prototyping is becoming increasingly important: an accurate model in an early stage of a development project minimizes the risk of not achieving specifications in a later stage. For accurate modelling of precision machines using linear cross roller bearings, reliable data on the stiffness characteristics of these bearings is required. This thesis performs a step-by-step validation of models. Starting with an empiric determination of the load-stiffness relation for an individual cylindrical roller-rail contact as this is not affected by the uncertainties present in bearing assemblies. This is followed by an analysis of the tangential effects that come into play when a roller is loaded at 45°. Once the roller-rail model at 45° is validated, this empirical roller-rail model is used to develop a model that predicts the stiffness of linear roller bearing assemblies
Proteomic analysis of the Plasmodium male gamete reveals the key role for glycolysis in flagellar motility.
BACKGROUND: Gametogenesis and fertilization play crucial roles in malaria transmission. While male gametes are thought to be amongst the simplest eukaryotic cells and are proven targets of transmission blocking immunity, little is known about their molecular organization. For example, the pathway of energy metabolism that power motility, a feature that facilitates gamete encounter and fertilization, is unknown.
METHODS: Plasmodium berghei microgametes were purified and analysed by whole-cell proteomic analysis for the first time. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD001163.
RESULTS: 615 proteins were recovered, they included all male gamete proteins described thus far. Amongst them were the 11 enzymes of the glycolytic pathway. The hexose transporter was localized to the gamete plasma membrane and it was shown that microgamete motility can be suppressed effectively by inhibitors of this transporter and of the glycolytic pathway.
CONCLUSIONS: This study describes the first whole-cell proteomic analysis of the malaria male gamete. It identifies glycolysis as the likely exclusive source of energy for flagellar beat, and provides new insights in original features of Plasmodium flagellar organization
