On the equilibrium problem and infinitesimal mechanisms of class theta tensegrity systems
This work presents a study on the equilibrium problem and the infinitesimal mechanisms of class θ= 1 tensegrity prisms. Local solutions of the self-equilibrium problem are numerically obtained through Newton-Raphson iterations. The presented results suggest that the analyzed structures can be usefully employed as building blocks of novel tensegrity metamaterials, due to their rich kinematic response and the considerably large number of infinitesimal mechanisms. © 2019 Author(s)

An observational study to evaluate micronutrient status during enteral feeding
Background: There are few data on the optimal micronutrient composition of paediatric enteral feeds. The recent European Directive on Foods for Special Medical Purposes (1999/21/EC) did not distinguish between the composition of adult and paediatric feeds. Aims: To evaluate, in an open, observational study, the long term nutritional biochemistry of 12 children aged 1–6 years and/or 8–20 kg. Methods: The children were receiving at least 50% of their estimated average requirement (EAR) for energy from paediatric enteral formulae: 1.0 kcal/ml (Nutrison Paediatric Standard) or 1.5 kcal/ml (Nutrison Paediatric Energy Plus). Venous blood samples for trace elements, vitamins, and minerals were taken at study entry and six months later. Parents kept three day food and feed records every month. Results: Despite a median energy intake of only 75% EAR (range 52–158%), 67% (n = 8) achieved their reference nutrient intake (RNI) for all micronutrients. No significant micronutrient deficiencies were seen on blood analysis after six months. Eighty three per cent (n = 10) had vitamin B12 and 92% (n = 11) had copper intake >150% RNI. Fifty eight per cent (n = 7) had high plasma B12 (>733 µmol/l) and 75% (n = 9) had high serum copper (>22 µmol/l) concentrations. Conclusions: Children without excess losses maintain adequate micronutrient status on long term enteral feeding. Subjects had high blood concentrations of vitamin B12 and copper, and had high dietary intakes of these micronutrients. The relative influence of place and direction in the Morris water task
The present study evaluated the generality of directional responding (Hamilton, Akers, Weisend, & Sutherland, 2007) in the Morris water task and attempted to identify methods that would yield a preference for navigation to the precise spatial location of an escape platform in the room. Four experiments evaluated the effects of training with the pool in a fixed location by repositioning the pool for a no-platform probe trial such that the absolute spatial location of the platform and the relative location of the platform within the pool (to which a directional response would occur) were in opposite quadrants. Two experiments attempted to explicitly train navigation to an absolute location in the room by repositioning the pool
during training while keeping the platform at the same location in the room. A preference for directional responding over navigation to the precise location of the platform was observed across a wide range of conditions including when rats were given extensive training (240 trials; Experiment 1), only given
platform placement experience in the absence of active swim training (Experiment 2), trained to navigate to multiple platform locations in a moving platform variant of the task (Experiment 3), and when animals were trained to navigate to a particular location regardless of the position of the apparatus in the room
(Experiments 4 - 5). A preference for navigation to the absolute spatial location of the platform was observed only when the salience of the pool was reduced by filling it to the top with water (Experiment 6)
Wine-related aromas for different seasons and occasions: Hedonic and emotional responses of wine consumers from Australia, UK and USA
It is still not fully clear how particular aromas in wine may affect consumers’ liking and emotional responses, and whether these change in different contexts and seasons. Therefore, a study was conducted with 3000 regular wine consumers from Australia, UK and USA using an online survey that assessed liking for 59 wine aromas, and from which 9 aromas, selected as representatives of groups of similar aromas, were profiled for elicited emotions by the ScentMove™ scale. The most liked wine aromas across all countries were ‘berry-like’, followed by ‘vanilla’, ‘chocolate’, ‘citrus-like’ and ‘honey’. Interestingly, aromas with the same liking rating displayed significantly different emotional profiles which seemed to drive differences in preferred consumption occasion and season. For example, highly liked ‘passionfruit’ aroma, associated with happy, relaxed and romantic emotions, was suitable for many occasions and seasons, ‘lemon’ evoked energetic emotions and was preferred in wines consumed at parties/BBQs in summer, while ‘chocolate’ would fit well in a restaurant. Hedonic and emotional responses towards selected wine aromas differed between various demographic groups. Gender, age and consumption frequency had greater effects than education or income, with similar patterns found in each country indicating similarity in wine cultures and the language used. The national influence was more reflected in the polarised rating by the USA consumers compared to UK and Australia. Full 3D CAD procedure for the speedy evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of masonry towers
A very straightforward 3D CAD approach for the speedy evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of existing masonry towers is presented. The procedure requires only the detailed 3D geometric model of the structure and automatically calculates the collapse acceleration on a user defined failure mechanism. In this paper, few pre-assigned mechanisms are tested, as for instance vertical splitting, simple overturning at the base, rocking with inclined yield lines and combined rocking and vertical splitting. The restriction of the possible tower failure within such a few mechanisms grounds on previous numerical research in the field and post-earthquake surveys experience. In any case, any user can define his own mechanisms according to the specificity of the case-study under consideration, directly shaping distinct volumes inside the CAD software. The procedure is automatized and the direct application of the principle of virtual works-assuming that masonry behaves as a no-tension material-allows the immediate evaluation of the horizontal acceleration at collapse. The mechanism associated to the minimum acceleration, in agreement with the kinematic theorem of limit analysis, is that most probably would occur in reality during a seismic event. The approach allows a straightforward evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of a tower and can be used even by practitioners not familiar with advanced FE computations and limit analysis concepts, so adapting well to the heterogeneous community involved in cultural heritage preservation. The automatized procedure is applied in this paper to a historical tower located in central Italy, to show the capabilities of the approach. © 2019 Author(s)

The Arab peoples of T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom in the light of post-colonial theory
It can be said that The Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a work whose true potential has not yet been discovered. That the work presents itself to be of greater value than may have previously seemed goes without question. However, during the more than eighty years of its existence, it was the author and not the work that created major interest in the academic world. The complicated character of T.E. Lawrence offered itself to psycho-analyst interpretation and most critiques have been built on these premises. Other works have concentrated on major historical events in Lawrence's life creating thorough biographies and numbers of fascinating approaches, some more, some less misleading were created. However. The Seven Pillars of Wisdom (from henceforth "Seven Pillars") foremostly survived in the shadows of David Lean's film "Lawrence of Arabia" and it was only during the late seventies, that concentration on the Seven Pillars as a text had begun to be cultivated. Additionally, it has only been during the past few years that works by writers such as Gertrude Bell, T.E. Lawrence or Charles M. Doughty have begun to gain a larger public interest. The aim of this work, however, is not to analyse the historical purpose of Lawrence's presence in the Middle East, nor to align the Seven Pillars with historical facts. Such..
