Beer, Brats, Cheese, and-- Baseball: The History and Impact of Baseball in Wisconsin

    No full text
From the 1800s baseball became a passion for the citizens of the United States. Wars, recessions and scandals could not bring down what is known as "America's Pastime." However baseball and other professional sports have been getting a bad name since historians and economist have started to look at the correlation between the team and the community. The notion of, "build us a new stadium at the cost of the tax payers or we are taking our team elsewhere" has been a common trend since 1950's. By looking at Appleton and Milwaukee this paper will look at the impacts baseball has on these communities both culturally and economically from 1966 to 2012

Let’s bring out the writer within us

The main objective of the editors, who are lecturers themselves, is to train their students to become future writers. They genuinely believe that with a little encouragement, students can make significant progress in developing into good writers. Reflective writing is not strictly academic in style. At its core, it captures what one feels after experiencing an event or situation. Reflective writing portrays an individual’s personal experience, introspection, thoughts, and emotions. Through such writing, the author shares with readers what he or she has learned or gone through. It can also be used to express the impact of a learning program or training session. Within a reflective essay, readers can expect to find descriptive details of what happened, the emotions involved, and how the author evaluates or concludes the experience. The good intentions of the editors and essay contributors deserve a round of applause, as the book was produced for a non-commercial purpose. It was published for the noble cause of providing clean drinking water for the people of Gaza, who have been living under miserable conditions for almost two years now. The food and other blockades imposed by the Israeli occupying forces have caused people to die from hunger and thirst. It is heartbreaking to witness that the majority of those who perish are women, children, the elderly, and the incapacitated. Beyond that, this book project provides a platform for students to demonstrate their talent and creativity. I truly believe that the experience gained by the students who participated in this project will benefit them immensely. Such an exercise will, one day in the future, help shape them into critical thinkers

Measuring gait – how the choice of measure can affect the statistical results and the clinical interpretation

    No full text
Aims: The aim of this study was to illustrate how the choice of gait measure could affect the statistical analysis of data and the resulting clinical conclusions.Methodology: A descriptive design in which the results from different tests from 10 patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus illustrates the potential to generate different clinical conclusions.Major findings and principal conclusion: The results illustrate how the choice of measure can affect the statistical results and the clinical interpretation of a study. It is possible to have the paradoxical situation in which one group has a better walking ability if the variable speed is used but the other group has a better walking ability if the variable time is used. An important message is that the choice of measurement and the transformation of data are not primarily statistical issues. If the statistical results are to be useful for clinical decisions, the variables used must be directly related to the utility for the subjects. An understanding of the clinical relevance of different outcomes is required. The distinction between when numbers are purely descriptive and when numbers represent a valuation is subtle and difficult to comprehend.</p

Origen’s References to Heracleon : A Quotation-Analytical Study of the Earliest Known Commentary on the Gospel of John

    No full text
In this monograph, Carl Johan Berglund reassesses Origen's references to the second-century philologist Heracleon, without presuming that Heracleon's exegesis is determined by views described in heresiological sources or that every reference is equivalent to a verbatim quotation. The author uses variations in Origen's attribution formulas to categorize almost two hundred references as either verbatim quotations, summaries, explanatory paraphrases, or mere assertions. Heracleon's views are assessed by considering the over fifty quotations and seventy summaries so identified in a context of literature to which Heracleon refers – John, a gospel similar to Matthew's, a collection of Pauline epistles, and the Preaching of Peter. The author concludes that Origen is likely to have inferred views he knew from his exegetical opponents (the heterodox and "those who bring in the natures") that were never expressed by Heracleon.
