Methods used to enhance the physicochemical properties of natural ester insulating oils for transformers: a review
Natural ester insulating oils, derived from vegetable-based feedstocks, are increasingly regarded as sustainable alternatives to conventional mineral oils due to their high fire point, biodegradability, and lower environmental impact. However, their widespread adoption in high-voltage equipment is constrained by their inherent limitations, such as lower oxidation stability, higher viscosity, and poor low-temperature performance. In this review, the three principal enhancement strategies developed to address these shortcomings are examined. The use of antioxidants is analysed for its role in improving oxidative resistance and flow characteristics. Transesterification is evaluated as a chemical modification method to alter the molecular structure, thereby enhancing viscosity and thermal stability. Refining and adsorbent treatments are discussed with respect to oil purification and regeneration, emphasising their adsorption efficiency and influence on dielectric performance. A comparative evaluation of these methods highlights their relative effectiveness, scalability, and practical challenges in implementation. This review underscores that no single approach is sufficient, and a combination of different methods is desirable to achieve optimal performance. These insights provide researchers with clear directions for further investigation while offering practitioners a knowledge base to guide the selection and application of enhanced natural ester insulating oils for reliable, long-term transformer operation
Acidity improvement of refined-bleached used vegetable oils as dielectric liquid using two-level factorial design
Recent studies have shown that modifying the chemical structure of used vegetable oils (UVOs) as an alternative dielectric liquid for oil-immersed transformers has improved these oils' physical, electrical and chemical properties. However, previous researchers have implemented the one-factorat-a-time method as their experimental design approach. Therefore, they overlooked the possibility that combining mixing process parameters at optimum ratios will yield a better result. Hence, in this study, the two-level (2k) factorial design is applied to achieve the lowest acidity level of UVOs through chemical refining process namely as refined-bleached used vegetable oils (RBUVOs). The involved process parameters are oil temperature, mixing speed and mixing time. Based on the results of 23 factorial design, it is found that oil temperature has the most significant effect on acidity, with a percentage contribution of 35.76%. The result also shows that the best mixing process parameters of RBUVOs were: oil temperature (60 °C), mixing speed (1,000 rpm) and mixing time (30 min). Note that these mixing process parameters produced better RBUVOs with an acidity value of 0.0221 mg KOH/g. A regression model is also developed to predict the acidity of RBUVOs as a function of oil temperature, mixing speed and mixing time
Color enhancement of refined-bleached used vegetable oils as dielectric liquid: two-level factorial design approach
Number of findings have shown that the used vegetable oils (UVOs) properties can be enhanced by changing their chemical structure and can be utilized as dielectric liquid in oil-immersed transformers. However, earlier researchers used the one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) method for their experimental design approach. Nevertheless, they failed to consider the possibility that combining the mixing process parameters at the highest ratios could produce a more favorable outcome. Hence, in this study, twolevel (2k) factorial design is applied to achieve the highest color reduction of UVOs through chemical refining process known as refined-bleached UVOs (RBUVOs). The involved process parameters are oil temperature, mixing speed and mixing time. Based on the results of 23 factorial design, it is found that mixing time and oil temperature has the most significant effects on color reduction, with a percentage contribution of 35.00% and 32.51%, respectively. The result also shows that the best mixing process parameters of RBUVOs were oil temperature (80 °C), mixing speed (1,000 rpm) and mixing time (60 min). These resulted in the highest color reduction of RBUVOs by 79.27%
Effects of DBDS and DBPC antioxidants on the corrosion of copper strips immersed in transformer oil
This paper presents the experimental findings on the effects of antioxidants on the corrosion of copper strips immersed in mineral oil (MO)–antioxidant samples. First, the uninhibited MO was mixed thoroughly with dibenzyl disulphide (DBDS) or 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol (DBPC) at different concentrations (5, 15, 25, 50, and 200 mg/kg) using a hot plate magnetic stirrer set at a temperature of 73 °C and stirring speed of 750 rpm for 15 min. Following this, the MO–antioxidant samples were poured into separate test vessels and copper strips were added into the vessels. Next, each MO– antioxidant sample was blanketed with nitrogen gas, sealed, and placed in a forced convection laboratory oven. The MO–antioxidant samples were then thermally aged at 150 °C for 48 h. The results showed that the acidity of the MO–antioxidant sample decreased with an increase in the antioxidant concentration, regardless whether the antioxidant was DBDS or DBPC. However, the corrosion of the copper strip worsened with an increase in the antioxidant concentration, where DBDS had a higher relative degree of corrositivity to copper compared with DBPC. In addition, the results showed that a DBPC concentration of 25 mg/kg reduced the the acidity of the MO– antioxidant sample and resulted in a moderate tarnish of the copper strip
Single input fuzzy logic controller for liquid slosh suppression
The chaotic nature of liquid slosh and the complex fluid dynamic motion in the container makes the traditional model-based control techniques complex and difficult to synthesize in practice. This paper presents investigations into the development of single input fuzzy logic controller (SIFLC) for liquid slosh control. The proposed approach, known as the SIFLC, reduces the conventional two-input FLC (CFLC) to a single input single output (SISO) controller. Two parallel SIFLC are developed for both lateral tank position and liquid slosh angle control. With the purpose to confirm the design of control scheme, a liquid slosh model is considered to represent the lateral slosh motion. The performances of the control schemes are accessed in terms of lateral tank tracking capability, level of liquid slosh reduction and time response specifications. Supremacy of
the proposed approach is shown by comparing the results with hybrid model-free Fuzzy-PID controller with derivative filter (PIDF). Finally, it is seen from the simulation results that the proposed control scheme has able to reduce the liquid slosh without unambiguously model the liquid slosh behavior
Compatibility of transformer construction materials with mineral, natural ester, and synthetic ester insulating oils
This paper presents the experimental findings on the compatibility of kraft paper strips and gasket materials (fluoroelastomer (FE) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)) with mineral (MO), natural ester (NE), and synthetic ester (SE) insulating oils. First, three insulating oil samples were prepared, and kraft paper strips, pressboards, and FE and NBR gasket materials were immersed in the oils. Metal catalysts were added into the insulating oil samples to simulate the actual conditions of oil-immersed transformers. The samples were thermally aged at 130 °C for 400 h. The results show that the tensile strength of the kraft paper immersed in NE increased by 1.82%, while the tensile strength of the kraft paper immersed in MO and SE decreased by 6.23 and 0.80%, respectively. The Shore A hardness of FE thermally aged in MO and SE decreased by 2.64 and 11.16%, respectively. In contrast, the FE thermally aged in NE became slightly harder, with a percentage degradation of +1.62%. On the other hand, the NBR thermally aged in MO, NE, and SE drastically decreased by 94.30, 86.70, and 93.67%, respectively. Hence, it is concluded that NBR is incompatible with the insulating oils tested in this study. In contrast, FE is most compatible with NE, followed by MO and SE
Effect Of Electrical Discharge On The Properties Of Natural Esters Insulating Fluids
Vegetable oils have been an alternative to mineral oil for oil-immersed transformers due to concern on less flammable, environmental-friendly, biodegradable, and sustainable resources of petroleum-based insulating oil. This paper presents the effect of electrical discharges (200 up to 1000 discharges) under 50 Hz inhomogeneous electric field on the properties (acidity, water content, and breakdown voltage) of two varieties of vegetablebased insulating oils; i) natural ester (NE) and ii) low viscosity insulating fluids derived from a natural ester (NELV). Results show the water content, acidity and breakdown voltage of NE fluctuate due to applied discharges, while NELV display insignificant changes. Hence, results indicate that the low viscosity insulating fluids derived from natural ester tend to maintain their properties compared to natural este
