    This open access book offers a historical context and an overview of the field's current artistic and scientific research. Sonic design includes the construction and performance of acoustic instruments but also recording, editing, mixing, and synthesizing sounds using analog and digital electronic devices. This book explores sonic design from the perspectives of music theory, music perception, embodied cognition, phenomenology, soundscape studies, acoustics, new interfaces for musical expression, sound and music computing, and music information retrieval. The chapters are selected contributions from an international seminar organized to celebrate the achievements of Professor Rolf Inge Godøy at the University of Oslo. As a composer, researcher, teacher, and supervisor, Professor Godøy has been central in developing a holistic approach to sonic design, from theory to practice.     The sonic imagery of the Covid-19 pandemic

    The Covid-19 pandemic catalysed disruptions and disturbances in ways of living across the globe. Many of these changes in daily life were felt through stark changes to our soundscapes, particularly those in urban centres. Might we better understand the effects of the Covid-19 lockdowns through sonic analysis? This chapter explores how sound analysis methods, including concepts of the sound-motion object and sonic image, might aid in understanding the environmental soundscapes of the pandemic lockdowns. The discussion focuses on the Sounding Covid-19 project—an initiative involving a series of field recordings carried out during Covid-19 pandemic-related events in the urban environments of Belfast, Northern Ireland (2020–2022) and Montreal, Canada (2020–2021). The project presents the sound archive through various listening experiences, including soundscape compositions, sound mapping and narrative-based radiophonic work. We consider how the pandemic may have invited us to pause and reconsider how we document and archive the present to look back and better understand the future. Sound may be vital in understanding our environment and the socio-cultural shifts over time. This chapter argues that documenting, preserving, and analysing the soundscapes of the pandemic lockdowns may help us reflect on our shared histories in several ways.<br/

    What is a musical instrument? What are the musical instruments of the future? This anthology presents thirty papers selected from the fifteen year long history of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME). NIME is a leading music technology conference, and an important venue for researchers and artists to present and discuss their explorations of musical instruments and technologies. Each of the papers is followed by commentaries written by the original authors and by leading experts. The volume covers important developments in the field, including the earliest reports of instruments like the reacTable, Overtone Violin, Pebblebox, and Plank. There are also numerous papers presenting new development platforms and technologies, as well as critical reflections, theoretical analyses and artistic experiences. The anthology is intended for newcomers who want to get an overview of recent advances in music technology. The historical traces, meta-discussions and reflections will also be of interest for longtime NIME participants. The book thus serves both as a survey of influential past work and as a starting point for new and exciting future developments

    Multimodal Interaction in Music Using the Electromyogram and Relative Position Sensing

    This paper describes a technique of multimodal, multichannel control of electronic musical devices using two control methodologies, the electromyogram (EMG) and relative position sensing. Requirements for the application of multi- modal interaction theory in the musical domain are discussed. We introduce the concept of bidirectional complementarity to characterize the relationship between component sensing technologies. Each control can be used independently, but to- gether they are mutually complementary. This reveals a fundamental difference from orthogonal systems. The creation of a concert piece based on this system is given as example

    The pursuit of novel interfaces for new music performance is a very interestingangle from which to approach the design of a musical instrument, but without theproper perspective the result can be hard to differentiate between a musically usefuldevice and a simple gadget. There is of course the typical industry approach ofbuilding electronic instruments in the likeness of an existing (acoustic) instrument,and while this can be useful, such imitation lacks the creative effort that can lead tonew innovations. However, ignoring the background and not building on an existingtradition can be hazardous as well, as it can either be too far ahead of its time or endup being merely a gimmick. Although the evolution of most acoustic instruments hasstagnated, there are recent examples of hybrid instruments (Bongers 1994; Burtner1994; Machover 1992) that augment traditional instruments with additional gesturalcapabilities. The Overtone Violin fits into this category

    Some Video Abstraction Techniques for Displaying Body Movement in Analysis and Performance

    This paper presents an overview of techniques for creating visual displays of human body movement based on video recordings. First a review of early movement and video visualization techniques is given. Then follows an overview of techniques that the author has developed and used in the study of music-related body movements: motion history images, motion average images, motion history keyframe images and motiongrams.     Best versus Good Enough Practices for Open Music Research

    Music researchers work with increasingly large and complex data sets. There are few established data handling practices in the field and several conceptual, technological, and practical challenges. Furthermore, many music researchers are not equipped for (or interested in) the craft of data storage, curation, and archiving. This paper discusses some of the particular challenges that empirical music researchers face when working towards Open Research practices: handling (1) (multi)media files, (2) privacy, and (3) copyright issues. These are exemplified through MusicLab, an event series focused on fostering openness in music research. It is argued that the "best practice" suggested by the FAIR principles is too demanding in many cases, but "good enough practice" may be within reach for many. A four-layer data handling "recipe" is suggested as concrete advice for achieving "good enough practice" in empirical music research
