The hyporheic zone, its functioning and meaning
The hyporheic zone is defined as a subsurface volume of sediment and porous space adjacent to a stream through which stream water readily exchanges. Although the hyporheic zone physically is defined by the hydrology of a stream and its surrounding environment, it has a strong influence on stream ecology, and stream biogeochemical cycling. Thus, the hyporheic zone is an important component of the stream ecosystems. The formation of the environmental gradients in the hyporheic zone is higly determinated by the hydrologic exchange between surface water and groundwater. The hydrologic exchange can be subdivided into three types: a) infiltration (downwelling surface water) b) exfiltration (upwelling interstitial water) c) horizontal advection (subsurface flow along the stream). The exchange of water, nutrients, and organic matter occur in response to variation in discharge and bed topography and porosity. Although the hyporheic zones extent is controlled by surface-water penetration into the subsurface, hyporheic water is generally composed of a mixture of surface water and groundwater. From a biogeochemical perspective, groundwater is generally low in dissolved oxygen and enriched in inorganic solutes compared to stream water. Thus, biogeochemical gradients exist within the hyporheic zone between two extremes defined by the surfacewater and groundwater end members. This makes the hyporheic zone a very active location of biogeochemical transformation of nutrients and other dissolved solutes. The upweling subsurface water supplies stream organisms with nutrients while the downwelling stream water provides dissolved oxygen and organic matter to microbes and invertebrates in the hyporheic zone. Hyporheic biogeochemical processes strongly influence the quality of surface water. The hyporheic zone is an ecotone between stream water and groundwater environments, combining not only biogeochemical but also physical characteristics of both environments. The hyporheic zone provides an ideal habitat for a wide array of microbes and invertebrates

Ecohydrological role of groundwater outflows in the functioning of the ecotone zone in Lake Jaczno, Poland
The research determined the influence of natural groundwater outflows from the spring peat bog on the water supply and its quality in Lake Jaczno. Lake Jaczno is located in the Suwalski Landscape Park (SLP) in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, north-east Poland. The research was conducted from April 2009 to October 2010 and from September 2022 to September 2023. Water samples were collected from spring areas, shallow groundwater, and from Lake Jaczno. Fieldwork involved measuring flow, temperature, water electrolytic conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, water oxygen saturation (WS), and water reaction (pH). Chemical analyses of water samples were carried out in the laboratory. Findings indicate that groundwater, spring water, and lake water in the SLP maintain high quality, with no significant changes in chemical composition over the past decades. Additionally, the physical water parameters display low temporal variability. The EC in the tested waters oscillates around 500 μS∙cm-1. Both spring and lake waters are well oxygenated (97-100%). Biogenic element concentrations exhibit higher variability, influenced by flora development in areas with natural groundwater outflows. High oxygenation of water contributes to increased concentrations of nitrates. The analysed waters exhibited similarity in the concentration and structure of phosphorus forms. Additionally, sediment chemical parameters at Lake Jaczno suggests a buffering capacity in the transitional zones between water and land. Despite similarities in chemical composition, sediment granulometry suggests low permeability, potentially restricting exchange between groundwater and surface waters. Monitoring springs in these environments is important due to their impact on quantity and quality of water in the analysed areas
Dissolved organic matter in freshwaters
RMO podlega biologicznym i abiotycznym transformacjom. Rozpuszczony węgiel organiczny (RWO) stanowi największy rezerwuar węgla organicznego w ekosystemach wodnych i jest istotnym elementem biogeochemicznego obiegu węgla w przyrodzie. Wysokie stężenie RMO w wodach słodkich prowadzi do znacznych deficytów tlenowych w hypolimnionie i eutrofizację wód. Obfitość i jakość RMO wpływa również na tempo produkcji pierwotnej i stanowi ważny element pętli mikrobiologicznej organizmów wodnych.Organic compounds are a common component of freshwaters. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is synthesized inside the ecosystem and beyond, in the terrestrial environment. DOM is a heterogeneous mixture of thousands of different organic substances and chemical compounds containing, in addition to carbon, also: oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur. DOM undergoes biological and abiotic transformations. The transformation of DOM consists of primary production processes, photo-oxidation processes, leaching and accumulation. DOM affects the rate and movement of heavy metals in freshwaters. Colored organic substances cause higher water temperature. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the largest reservoir of organic carbon in aquatic ecosystems and is an important element of the biogeochemical carbon cycle. Elevated concentration of DOM in surface water, affects the oxygen deficits in hypolimnion and water eutrophication. The abundance and quality of DOM affects the rate of primary production and is an important element of the microbial loop
Vertical and horizontal changes in the abundance and activity of bacteria in Lake Hańcza, NE Poland
A bacteriological study was conducted in late summer (early September 2018) in the deepest postglacial reservoir in the central lowland depression - Lake Hańcza (northeastern Poland). The aim of the study was to determine the spatial variation in the density of planktonic bacteria, the level of their hydrolytic activity and the ratio of live to dead bacterial cells. During the fieldwork 92 water samples were collected from thirteen stratified sites located in different parts of the lake. The bacterial number ranged from 0.57 to 3.97 (10⁶ cells m⁻¹). No horizontal or vertical changes in bacterial number were observed in a uniform pattern. The highest bacterial abundance was recorded at two coastal sampling points, both located in the southern part of the lake at the direct catchment area with commercial development ("agroturism" guesthouses) . There was little difference in bacterial number across the horizontal gradient (F = 1.865; P = 0.170). Many water quality parameters appeared to be significant factors correlating with bacterial abundance in Lake Hancza. There were no statistically Significant differences in hydrolitical bacterial activity and live/ dead ratios between investigated sites and across horizontal gradient. Our results indicate that bacterial activity in deep lakes is affected by many water quality parameters, such as temperature (r=0.667), Ca²⁺ (r=-0.4510), Mg²⁺(r=0.511), N0₃- (r=-0.587) and oxygen saturation (r=0.582). Taking into account previous hydrobiological studies, Lake Hancza was found to be very patchy in terms of bacterioplankton abundance.W. Pol: [email protected]. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Long-term changes in the trophic state of Suwalki lakes – an analysis by means of indices based on abundance and composition of their rotifer fauna
Rotifer abundance and species composition in lakes of the Suwalki Landscape Park were studied in the years 1983–1985, 2009, 2012 and 2015. Rotifer trophic state indices (TSIROT) were used to assess changes in the trophic state of the studied lakes. In most lakes of the Suwalki Landscape Park, there were no changes in rotifer communities over the 25–32 year period to indicate a decline in trophy of the lakes. However, in lakes with the strongest decline in TSIROT values, the values of indicative parameters widely varied in 2015, which may indicate that the status of rotifer communities in the lakes may be dependent on non-trophic factors
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
