Embodying inspiration race and disaffected young white men in Burnley
Young white men have often found themselves bearing the burden of designs for the improvement of UK society. Official reports reprised this theme following the racially charged disturbances in Northern England's mill towns in the summer of 2001. So- called disaffected young white men were left ambiguously positioned -and immobilised- on the margins of political discourse. In response, this thesis complicates the ways in which young white men in Burnley, a town affected by the violence, may be appreciated as politically capable. In so doing, it prepares for a more imaginative mapping of roles for them in local social progress, post-2001. Ethnographies of boxing and bodybuilding gyms unpack the variety of affective capacities through which young white men live out complex masculine body cultures. These study the inspiration young men find in these carefully engineered and politically enabling places. Although these gyms nestle amidst Burnley's urban hinteriands, and between otherwise parallel lives, they see fragile bonds of affection grow between young white and Asian men. Those bonds represent small, fragile and politically ambiguous gains, which must nonetheless inform proposals for Burnley’s future. The thesis speculates that if such proposals are to be desirable and possible, those same young men must find them persuasive. It therefore recommends placing colloquial inspirations, and a cautious affirmation of capable individuality, at the heart of visions of social progress in Burnley

Exploring visual representation of sound in computer music software through programming and composition
Presented through contextualisation of the portfolio works are developments of a practice in which the acts of programming and composition are intrinsically connected. This practice-based research (conducted 2009–2013) explores visual representation of sound in computer music software.
Towards greater understanding of composing with the software medium, initial questions are taken as stimulus to explore the subject through artistic practice and critical thinking. The project begins by asking: How might the ways in which sound is visually represented influence the choices that are made while those representations are being manipulated and organised as music? Which aspects of sound are represented visually, and how are those aspects shown?
Recognising sound as a psychophysical phenomenon, the physical and psychological aspects of aesthetic interest to my work are identified. Technological factors of mediating these aspects for the interactive visual-domain of software are considered, and a techno-aesthetic understanding developed.
Through compositional studies of different approaches to the problem of looking at sound in software, on screen, a number of conceptual themes emerge in this work: the idea of software as substance, both as a malleable material (such as in live coding), and in terms of outcome artefacts; the direct mapping between audio data and screen pixels; the use of colour that maintains awareness of its discrete (as opposed to continuous) basis; the need for integrated display of parameter controls with their target data; and the tildegraph concept that began as a conceptual model of a gramophone and which is a spatio-visual sound synthesis technique related to wave terrain synthesis. The spiroid-frequency-space representation is introduced, contextualised, and combined both with those themes and a bespoke geometrical drawing system (named thisis), to create a new modular computer music software environment named sdfsys

Mutational signatures in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma from eight countries with varying incidence
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) shows remarkable variation in incidence that is not fully explained by known lifestyle and environmental risk factors. It has been speculated that an unknown exogenous exposure(s) could be responsible. Here we combine the fields of mutational signature analysis with cancer epidemiology to study 552 ESCC genomes from eight countries with varying incidence rates. Mutational profiles were similar across all countries studied. Associations between specific mutational signatures and ESCC risk factors were identified for tobacco, alcohol, opium and germline variants, with modest impacts on mutation burden. We find no evidence of a mutational signature indicative of an exogenous exposure capable of explaining differences in ESCC incidence. Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC)-associated mutational signatures single-base substitution (SBS)2 and SBS13 were present in 88 and 91 of cases, respectively, and accounted for 25 of the mutation burden on average, indicating that APOBEC activation is a crucial step in ESCC tumor development. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature America, Inc
Measurement of the energy asymmetry in production at 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment and interpretation in the SMEFT framework
A measurement of the energy asymmetry in jet-associated top-quark pair
production is presented using 139 of data collected by the
ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during collisions at
TeV. The observable measures the different probability of top and
antitop quarks to have the higher energy as a function of the jet scattering
angle with respect to the beam axis. The energy asymmetry is measured in the
semileptonic decay channel, and the hadronically decaying top quark
must have transverse momentum above GeV. The results are corrected for
detector effects to particle level in three bins of the scattering angle of the
associated jet. The measurement agrees with the SM prediction at
next-to-leading-order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics in all three bins. In
the bin with the largest expected asymmetry, where the jet is emitted
perpendicular to the beam, the energy asymmetry is measured to be
, in agreement with the SM prediction of .
Interpreting this result in the framework of the Standard Model effective field
theory (SMEFT), it is shown that the energy asymmetry is sensitive to the
top-quark chirality in four-quark operators and is therefore a valuable new
