Jean-Luc Chevillard, "The Classification of 'Nouns' according to Tamil Grammatical Tradition in Western Scholarship". Among the four parts of speech which are recognized by Tamil grammatical tradition, which starts with the Tolkāppiyam (beginning of the Christian era), prominence is given to peyar "noun" and vinai " verbs". The description of peyar is heterogeneous, containing enumerations (mostly pronouns) but also some classifications, one of the classes often mentioned being that of iyarpeyar "simple nouns". Compared to this variety, the description of vinai is more compact, the only complexity being due to the presence of a class of kurippu vinai "notional verbs", which some Western scholars have called "conjugated nouns".Chevillard Jean-Luc. Jean-Luc Chevillard The Tēvāram in the twentieth century Western scholarship has been devoting some efforts to the Tamil Šaiva corpus for more than 40 years in Pondicherry, associating in the task non-Indian indologists and traditional scholars. The output has been some text editions as well as translation projects. As part of this endeavour, the late V. M. Subramanya Ayyar (1905-1981) has composed a South Indian English gloss of the Tēvāram, which is a collection of 7 books, probably dating back to the 7th and 8th century, and which is the initial part of the Tamil Šaiva canon (12 books in all). Based on a long scrutiny of this still unpublished manuscript, the present study examines, on the one hand, the way the Tēvāram is today rooted in its natural religious audience; it proposes, on the other hand, to extend the original translation project, in order that it might eventually reach its second audience, i.e. the one which is concerned by a scientific study of the corpus, by the means of making available a full textual concordance of the Tēvāram, interactively linked with V. M. Subramanya Ayyar's word-for-word explanations. Chevillard Jean-Luc. Le Tēvāram au XXe siècle. In: Bulletin de l'Ecole française d'Extrême-Orient. Tome 87 N°2, 2000. pp. 729-740

Jean-Luc Chevillard had his initial training in Mathematics in the École Normale Supérieure (Paris) before switching to the field of linguistics. After a stay in South India, he decided to specialize in the history of the Tamil grammatical tradition and wrote his thesis on one of the commentaries of Tolkāppiyam. He was recruited by the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), and then by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) where he is currently “chargé de recherche” (UMR..

Autour du commentaire de Cēṉāvaraiyar sur le Collatikarām du Tolkāppiyam: introduction, glossaire analytique et appendices - A companion volume to Cēṉāvaraiyar's commentary on the Collatikarām of the Tolkāppiyam: Introduction, analytical glossary and appendices

    No full text
This companion volume to a French translation of the Cēṉāvaraiyam also intended as a help to the reading of similar texts, is part of an endeavour to document the development of the Tamil scholarly tradition. The central part of the book is an analytic glossary of all technical words and phrases used by Cēṉāvaraiyar while commenting on the Collatikarām, a task which required him both to describe the Tamil language and at the same time to explain what the author of the Tolkāppiyam had revealed about it. The original approach chosen by Jean-Luc Chevillard, a historian of linguistics, devotes as much attention to metagrammatical items as to grammatical ones. The focus is not on finding truths about language, but on examining for itself that ancient and interesting human rational activity: the building of grammars

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
