Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Modern Theories and Islamic Concept of Jihad Impacting Pakistan Security Dilemma
Pakistan National Security is directly related to a mix of Islamic precepts and the implications of contemporary real politics. Initially modern theories were a philosophical response to priesthood of the time hedging Christianity for their own predominance. With the advent of Islam the West applied the same antipathy to the faith of Islam and later it impacted Muslim states and Regions. The West however, circumvented religion as historical legacy representing Christianity. Pakistan being part of wider Muslim world is prone to historically prejudiced; direct and indirect threats based on Modern political theories. Modern theories are Euro-centric owing to their war prone regional history. Islamic Security concepts characterize trans-border implication. Modern political and security perspective are based on; personal experience of the people gone through wars and civil chaos whereas Islamic concept of just war is based on faith absolutes and Meta narratives1. Modern theories imply human nature as a pivot to craft response in anticipation of a predetermined threat to justify pre-emption. Modern theories have become the seed of modern state policies. Islam makes it obligatory to prepare and built power to first deter and retaliate only under tyranny, oppression and under the threat of expulsion and extermination. Pakistan military initiative are deemed inspired by Islamic concept of Jihad and have become cause of her Security Dilemma due to prejudiced Western view. Islam emphasis on mankind as one whole universal community called ‘Ummah’. The modern theories divide the world on National identifies and globalizes only trade and transactions. National Interest in modern theories is pivotal to the state policies. This marked difference is sometime purposely confused as a strategy to dub even a legitimate resistance or movement as Terrorism depending on National Interest expediency. The major cause of conflict is embedded in Islamic and modern political connotations of a just war. These polemical perspectives explain Pakistan Security Dilemma as part of the Muslim world and a need for negotiated understanding for peace and stability and interfaith harmony
Effect of reducing variability in reservoir water levels on irrigation returns and stream flow minimums: An application of discrete stochastic programming and safety first programming
Conflicts arise in the management of multi-purpose reservoirs between several objectives: (a) flood control, (b) recreational benefits from relatively stable reservoir levels, (c) irrigation, and (d) levels of remaining stream flows. In the last case, pressure exists to maintain relatively constant remaining stream flow levels for environmental purposes, recreation, wildlife, and the assurance of the delivery of contracted water to downstream users. This research focuses on the impact of providing reduced variability in remaining stream flows on irrigation benefits as well as increased variability in reservoir water levels in a southern Nebraska setting. The estimated impacts are developed using a discrete stochastic programming model which also includes flood control constraints. In this analysis, an integer safety-first risk model is imbedded in a discrete stochastic programming model to derive optimal release strategies and initial and conditional cropping decisions. The safety-first model is used to insure minimum stream flows while releasing impounded water to maximize irrigated crop returns. The model employed three irrigation release decisions with crop choice and irrigation strategies dependent upon risk of water availability and a conditional derived optimizing irrigation decision set. The erosion/productivity impact calculator (EPIC) model is used in this study to simulate necessary yield and irrigation data for the crops. Forty-seven years of actual incoming stream flow and precipitation data provide the stream flow probability levels utilized in the model. Variability in remaining stream flows is controlled by moving upper and lower remaining stream flow levels of the model closer together. Historical stream flow variability provides a useful contrast in which to view the changes in remaining stream flow levels. The results show relatively modest decreases in irrigation benefits from reducing variability in remaining stream flows. Also, the impacts on reservoir levels variabilities are relatively modest attesting to the efficiency of the water allocation model
Mechanisms behind pH changes by plant roots and shoots caused by elevated concentration of toxic elements
Toxic elements are present in polluted water from mines, industrial outlets, storm water etc. Wetland plants take up toxic elements and increase the pH of the medium. In this thesis was investigated how the shoots of submerged plants and roots of emergent plants affected the pH of the surrounding water in the presence of free toxic ions. The aim was to clarify the mechanisms by which these plants change the surrounding water pH in the presence of toxic ions. The influence of Elodea canadensis shoots on the pH of the surrounding water was studied in the presence of cadmium (Cd) at low initial pH (4-5). The involvement of photosynthetic activity in the pH changes was investigated in the presence and absence of Cd. The cytosolic, vacuolar and apoplasmic pH changes as well as cytosolic Cd changes in E. canadensis were monitored. The influence of Eriophorum angustifolium roots on the pH of the surrounding water was investigated in the presence of a combination of Cd, copper, lead, zinc and arsenic at low initial pH (3.5). Eriophorum angustifolium root exudates were analyzed for organic acids. Elodea canadensis shoots increased the pH of the surrounding water, an effect more pronounced with increasing Cd levels and/or increasing plant biomass and increased plant Cd uptake. The pH increase in the presence of free Cd ions was not due to photosynthesis or proton uptake across the plasmalemma or tonoplast. Cadmium was initially sequestered in the apoplasm of E. canadensis and caused its acidosis. Eriophorum angustifolium roots increased the surrounding water pH and this effect was enhanced in the presence of arsenic and metals. This pH increase was found to depend partly on the release of oxalic acid, formic acid and succinic acid by the plants. In conclusion, E. canadensis shoots and E. angustifolium roots were found to increase the low initial pH of the surrounding water. The pH modulation by these species was enhanced by low levels of free toxic ions in the surrounding water.At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
