Farewell Sweet Jane
Farewell sweet Jane, for I must start,
Across the foaming sea,
My trun k is now on Johnson's bar,
With all my company;
It's do not weep sweet lovely Jane,
Come dry those tearful eyes,
I will return to you again,
Unless your Willie dies.
You see the sails upon the bar,
They're almost ready now,
Give one sweet kiss my lovely Jane,
It's mighty deep to plow;
She wet my lips with flowing tears,
And I did kiss her hand,
Remember my dear Willie dear,
When on some foreign land,
My bosom felt a feeling then,
It ne'er had felt before,
I got on board with Johnson's men,
And I left my native shore,
For seven weeks we sa iled along.
Upon the mighty deep,
One night I thought we all were lost,
Our captain was asleep.
So early next morning at the break of day,
We landed on the shore.
And to the men did much avail,
To hunt the golden ore.
I loaded down my trunk with gold.
And then I thought of Jane,
With anxious thoughts did homeward ride,
For we were acrosst the plains.

Reel 242 Item 4
Farewell, Sweet Jane (Cont'd)
Reel 242, Item 4
I saw a bunch of lovely girls,
Come marching to the ship,
I saw sweet Jane with all her curls,
Then I begin to skip.
I flew and caught her in my arms,
Both hearts were filled with charms,
We were so full we could not talk,
I caught her in my arms.
We walked along the marble walk,
Til we got to our father's door,
The crowd did look so very neat,
While standing on the shore.
The parson read the marriage law.
Which bound us both for life,
Now Jane is mine without a doubt,
A kind and loving wife.Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation
