This article titled “Poetry as an Act of History” is an Urdu translation of María Rosa Menocal’s essay, along with the translator’s notes. The article begins with Andalusian references in Cervantes’ Don Quixote and moves on to trace these in poems of Mahmoud Darwish and Lorca’s translations of Andalusian poetry. The author argues that historicity is revealed more in literature than in history itself

    No full text
Purpose: The existing research suggests that trust has a drastic impact on improving individual work motivation as well as organizational performance, keeping the status of glue that joins individuals and organizations. However, the existing research suggests that trust is influenced by various factors and national culture is one of them. This research is conducted to estimate, analyze and understand the influence of national culture on trust building in the light of the available literature and empirical evidence. Design/Methodology/Approach: This research is based on the PhD research dissertation of the author and it was conducted through qualitative content analysis of research articles on the subject matter. Findings: This research suggests that trust is not an independent, but a dependent variable, which is influenced by several individual, organizational and environmental factors and among these variables, national culture is one of the most important factors influencing the process of trust development among individuals as well as organizations. Implications/Originality/Value: This study corroborates the drastic cultural influence on trust development. Due to the internationalization of business, trust development is progressively encompassing cross-cultural relationships. Hence, cultural variance instead of a moderator, is a predictor for the cultivation of trust building. Theoretically, as well as practically, this research paper offers several implications for managers and practitioners. &nbsp

Investigating the Impact of Stylistic Amplification in Urdu Translation of Bapsi Sidhwa’s English Novel

    No full text
This paper examines the aspect of stylistic amplification in the Urdu translation of The Crow Eaters by Bapsi Sidhwa, translated by Umer Memon as Jungle Wala Sahib. The article draws upon the amplification strategy by Luisa Molina and Amparo Hurtado Albir (2002), as well as Mona Baker’s theory of narrative in the study of how stylistic options influence the faithfulness of translation in literary work. Applying a comparative textual analysis of selected passages, the paper refers to several instances in which neutral or emotionally charged narrative devices in the original text are transformed into explicitly emotionally charged or ideology-laden expressions in the Urdu version. The results indicate that although amplification can be successfully used to improve readability and cultural relevance to the Urdu audience, it is likely to overemphasize the personalities of characters and the tone of the story, thereby altering the stylistic nature of the original work. The research will contribute to the broader discussion of the ethical questions surrounding translation and literary style, specifically how much or how little of the story a translator should alter to adapt it across languages and cultures
