Block Trading, Ownership Structure, and the Value of Corporate Votes

    No full text
This paper shows that open market block trading can provide a link between private benefits of control enjoyed by large shareholders and the ?voting premium?, i.e. the price difference between voting and non-voting shares. We first demonstrate in a microstructure model with informed traders and short-selling constraint that the trading activity of blockholders translates into a spread between the prices of voting and non-voting shares. In contrast to the extant theory, this model can explain the voting premium in the absence of corporate takeovers. In the empirical part of the paper, we show for a comprehensive sample of German dual-class companies that large trades occur more often in voting shares than in non-voting shares, and that the block trading activity in voting shares is strongly correlated with the voting premium. Moreover, the effect of the ownership structure on the voting premium becomes insignificant once we control for the block trading activity in voting shares. --

This book belongs to one series that seems a variation of another series. This series is published by Klinke and I now have volumes 6 through 10. This series includes Neuere Deutsche Fabeln and others. The other series is published by Alfo Kunstdruck Verlag in Kaiserslautern and includes Deutsche Fabeln aus dem 16. und 18. Jahrhundert von Luther und Lessing and others. There is even a third series of two books identical with Alfo editions but lacking notice of a publisher. All three types have the same canvas binding and the same striped cover format with a picture at the center. Volumes in all have 32 pages and fourteen fables. The editor remains the same for all, but illustrators vary within and among the series. In fact, this copy has a gray band apparently pasted on its pink cover; the band announces Mit Bildern von Elsa Schnell-Dittmann. She is not mentioned inside the volume. Might this band be covering indication of a different illustrator? There is a T of C at the beginning. The color work for the fourteen fables here is simple and pleasing. Each fable's text is on the left-hand page with a colored illustration on the right-hand page. Below each colored illustration is a simple sketch of a different phase of the fable. The cover illustration, repeated on 21, may be among the best. It presents Leonardo's The Rock. A rock works itself loose from its cliff in order to find the big world down on the road. There it gets stepped upon and ridden over -- and begins to long to be back where it was. Thus many leave the pleasant life of the countryside to live in the city. A table at the book's end reveals the authors of each fable. Two come from Juan Manuel, three from Felix Maria de Samaniego, two from Tomas Iriarte, one from Ramon de Campoamor, and one each from Leonardo da Vinci, Clemente Bondi, Aurelio de Giorg Bertola, Gherardo de Rossi, Ivan Krylov, and Ivan Turgenev. Rossi's The Horse and the Fox is new to me. The horse beats the bull in a race, and everyone except the fox praises the horse. I will wait until he beats the stag. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: GermanBearbeitet und Herausgegeben von Dr. Jakob Szlisk

The diploma thesis Philological Marginal Notes in John's Gospel of Blahoslav's Translations of New Testament deals with the characteristics of the philological marginal notes in John's Gospel of Blahoslav's New Testament from the year 1564 and 1568. The life of Jan Blahoslav, the information about Blahoslav's New Testament and the history of the research about his translation of New Testament are summarised in the thesis as well as the tradition of Bible commentary and marginal notes in their European and Czech contexts. In the practical part the thesis presents the number of philological marginal notes explored in both editions, the number of variants in marginal notes and their word class distribution. It tries to find possible sources for the text in marginal notes. It uses Czech printed translations of the Bible (Klaudyán's New Testament, Lukáš's New Testament, Optát's New Testament, Melantrich's Bible of 1556-1557) and Latin translations by Erasmus and Beza and their annotations and Vulgate. As a supplement to the thesis there is also a list of excerpted philological marginal notes from both editions of Blahoslav's New Testament and corresponding places in Bible translations examined

Practitioner review: current best practice in the management of adverse events during treatment with ADHD medications in children and adolescents

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Medication is an important element of therapeutic strategies for ADHD. While medications for ADHD are generally well-tolerated, there are common, although less severe, as well as rare but severe adverse events AEs during treatment with ADHD drugs. The aim of this review is to provide evidence- and expert-based guidance concerning the management of (AEs) with medications for ADHD. METHODS: For ease of use by practitioners and clinicians, the article is organized in a simple question and answer format regarding the prevalence and management of the most common AEs. Answers were based on empirical evidence from studies (preferably meta-analyses or systematic reviews) retrieved in PubMed, Ovid, EMBASE and Web of Knowledge through 30 June 2012. When no empirical evidence was available, expert consensus of the members of the European ADHD Guidelines Group is provided. The evidence-level of the management recommendations was based on the SIGN grading system. RESULTS: The review covers monitoring and management strategies of loss of appetite and growth delay, cardiovascular risks, sleep disturbance, tics, substance misuse/abuse, seizures, suicidal thoughts/behaviours and psychotic symptoms. CONCLUSION: Most AEs during treatment with drugs for ADHD are manageable and most of the times it is not necessary to stop medication, so that patients with ADHD may continue to benefit from the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment

An exploratory data analysis of Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company : current research, possibilities, and constraints

This thesis investigates the intersection of authors and members at Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company, a lending library and bookstore in Paris, established in 1919. As a key cultural hub of early 20th-century Modernism, Shakespeare and Company facilitated transnational intellectual exchange among prominent literary figures, including Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, and André Gide. Despite its historical importance, the role of the library in shaping Modernist and avant-garde movements remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by analyzing author-member borrowing habits and the intellectual networks fostered through the library.Using datasets from Princeton’s Shakespeare and Company Project, this thesis employs Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) to uncover patterns of literary borrowing, shared interests, and intellectual collaborations. The analysis integrates data visualization, network theory, and geospatial mapping to examine relationships and demographics within the library’s community. Results reveal clusters of thematic and geographic connections, with prominent nodes like Hemingway and Joyce acting as intellectual bridges. Borrowed titles span foundational European works, contemporary experimental literature, and controversial texts, reflecting the diverse scope of Modernism.Network analysis highlights a fragmented yet dynamic community, where tightly connected subgroups coexisted with broader, less cohesive clusters. The inclusion of author-members’ works in the collection suggests a reciprocal system of literary exchange. Geospatial analysis further reveals the centrality of the Parisian Left Bank as a literary hub, while author-members’ transient addresses indicate connections between peripheral locations and metropolitan centers. This research positions Shakespeare and Company as a pivotal intellectual network in Modernist literature, emphasizing the library’s role in fostering interconnected creativity. By leveraging digital humanities methods, the study advances understanding of the mechanisms underlying literary movements, demonstrating that such movements emerge not from isolated effort but from collaborative and transnational exchange.Christina Dittmann, B.A.Masterarbeit Universität Graz 2025Zusammenfassung auf Deutsch und Englisc

Shifts in the passive dialectal vocabulary in the Ostrava region

Výzkum mimo jiné přinesl aktualizovaná...This bachelor thesis examines the decline of dialects in three rural villages in the Ostrava region (Krmelín, Nová Bělá, Stará Ves nad Ondřejnicí). Taking into account the regional distribution of the words, a sample of substantive lexical units recorded in the area was selected from the Czech Language Atlas I and II. These lexemes should not be identifiable on the basis of knowledge of their equivalent in written or Common Czech. A questionnaire was then compiled from these dialectisms and sent to a control group consisting mainly of respondents from the Čechy region. Thanks to this questionnaire, dialectisms whose meaning could be estimated by the respondents from Čechy were eliminated and at the same time its results served as reference points for the final questionnaire. A modified final questionnaire was then created and distributed to the inhabitants of the surveyed villages. It was completed by a total of 51 respondents, who were divided into 4 age groups according to generational divisions. After processing the responses, it was possible to describe the results, which confirm the hypothesis that knowledge of dialect vocabulary (recorded in the Czech Language Atlas) decreases with the new generations. The decline in knowledge is most significant between Baby Boomers and Generation X, the...Institute of Czech Language and Theory of CommunicationÚstav českého jazyka a teorie komunikaceFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art
