No full textThis Omnibus brings together three classic works of the renowned sociologist and anthropologist, Jan Breman. It comprises Of Peasants, Migrants and Paupers (1985), Wage Hunters and Gatherers (1994), and The Labouring Poor in India (2003), reflecting his scholarship over a period of three decades. The introduction, by Sujata Patel, analyses Breman’s research on the nature of capitalism in Gujarat, examines his remarkable contribution to the debate on the theory of the ‘informal sector’, and discusses how his intellectual eclecticism and interdisciplinary methods of fieldwork have opened up a new perspective in the area of sociology of development, labour and migration studies. In addition, in a candid interview with Yolanda van Ede—of the University of Amsterdam—Breman talks, among other things, about his family background, his academic life, and his fieldwork. Of Peasants, Migrants and Paupers delineates the dynamics of the agrarian class structure, the interrelations of caste and class and the surrounding social world. It examines the relations between the Kanbi Patidars, an upwardly mobile caste of landowners and their traditional farm servants, the Dublas. Wage Hunters and Gatherers is concerned with the huge mass of unskilled labour wandering around in search of work in western India. It critically analyses the concept of the informal sector and draws attention to the large segment of unskilled labour. The Labouring Poor in India focuses on rural society in a globalizing India and the urban migration of unskilled and socially underprivileged labour into informal sector of the economy

Get PDFIn Kolonialisme en racisme heeft Jan Breman veertien opstellen van eigen hand verzameld waarvan de helft niet eerder gepubliceerd werd. Als inleiding heeft hij daar nog enkele fragmenten uit zijn autobiografie bij opgenomen die duidelijk maken waar hij vandaan komt en wat hem drijft. De bundel is helder geschreven en kent, ondanks het brede scala van behandelde onderwerpen, enkele duidelijke lijnen. In het bijzonder drie thema’s komen uitgebreid aan de orde: de sociale kwestie, de koloniale kwestie en de verbanden tussen beide. Jan meent dat deze vraagstukken een geschiedenis van minstens tweehonderd jaar kennen en dat ze verklaard moeten worden uit de economische verhoudingen en politieke culturen binnen het wereldkapitalisme – of, zoals hij meerdere keren zegt – het imperialisme

No full textIn een historisch onderzoek dat een herziening is van de koloniale geschiedschrijving, duikt prof. dr. Jan Breman in een van de zwartste bladzijdes van de Nederlandse geschiedenis. In Koloniaal profijt van onvrije arbeid: het Preanger stelsel van gedwongen koffieteelt op Java, dat meer dan dertig jaar onderzoek omspant, behandelt hij de werking en uitwerking van gedwongen koffieteelt onder de koloniale heerschappij, en de invloed op het maatschappelijk bestel in de hooglanden van West-Java. Hij laat zien hoe de VOC de inheemse landadel inschakelde als goedkope vorm van bestuur. Deze landadel hield de boerenbevolking door middel van uitbuiting en onderdrukking in het gareel. Het Preanger koffieregime werd vanaf 1830 voortgezet in de vorm van het cultuurstelsel. Dwang was inherent aan dit stelsel waarbij de boeren niet alleen verplicht waren om de voorgeschreven arbeidsprestatie te leveren, maar ook om de eenzijdig vastgestelde vergoeding voor de producten zonder protest te aanvaarden. Dat deze opzet succes behaalde beschrijft Multatuli in zijn Max Havelaar. Breman levert met deze studie de feitelijke onderbouwing van de aanklacht door Multatuli, anderhalve eeuw geleden. Hoe komt het dat de werking en uitwerking van het Preanger-stelsel van gedwongen koffieteelt zo lang buiten beeld is gebleven? Breman plaatst scherpe kanttekeningen bij de uitgesproken gunstige oordelen die worden geveld in de koloniale geschiedschrijving. De toon van zelfrechtvaardiging en stilzwijgen over het gebruik van dwangarbeid waarin de koloniale overheid uitblonk, is volgens Breman een opvallend element in de verdediging van de tot nu toe gevoerde politiek. Deze studie kan beschouwd worden als een herziening van de geschiedschrijving én als een sociaalwetenschappelijke verhandeling van Multatuli's werk
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
