    Involutions of the Mathieu groups

    No full text
The five Mathieu permutation groups M₁₁, M₁₂M₂₂,M₂₃ and M₂₄ are constructed and the involutions (elements of order two) of these groups are classified according to the number of letters they fix. It is shown that in M₁₂ ah involution fixes no letters or four letters, while in M₂₄ an involution fixes zero or eight letters. It is also shown that in each of the Mathieu groups, all the irregular involutions are conjugate and that in M₁₂ all the regular involutions are conjugate. The orders of the centralizers of the involutions are calculated and it is shown that no regular involution lies in the centre of a 2-Sylow subgroup. Most of the results are obtained by calculating directly the form a permutation must take in order to have a certain property and then finding one or all the permutations of this form.Science, Faculty ofMathematics, Department ofGraduat

Analysis of Mathieu Equation Stable Solutions in the First Zone of Stability

    No full text
AbstractThe paper presents the results of a homogeneous Mathieu equation studies. Mathieu equation solutions are oscillations, modulated in amplitude and frequency. In the computational experiments we found dependences of the given oscillations on the ratio of the coefficients. These dependences are shown in graphs that can be used for an approximate estimation of the Mathieu equation solutions without integration

Pensar las escalas para pensar las luchas: Autor: Mathieu UHEL

    No full text
The article serves two purposes: on the one hand, Uhel locates academic discussion around scale; and, with this, he promotes attention to this problem in contemporary struggles. In the first section, Uhel locates academic discussions around scale, as a useful methodological tool to understand the complexity of capitalist societies; in the second section, the author advances the argument around the context of the scalar dimension of capitalist imperialism; finally, the author focuses on the role of political activity on a national scale in the tense relationship between the impositions of capital and the social movement

Graphs and tables of the Mathieu functions and their first derivatives

Mathieu functions are employed in solving a variety of problems in mathematic (al? ) physics. In many cases the configuration involves elliptical coordinates. Of course, the circular geometry is the degenerate case of the elliptical cross section. This volume contains values for, and curves of the angular and radial Mathieu functions and their first derivatives. The latter are often needed in the solution of problems, in particular in solving electromagnetic wave propagation problems. Also included are data on zero crossings of the radial Mathieu functions. These are often needed for determining the cut-off frequencies for propagating modes. Other tables are available for the Mathieu functions, but there is very little data available for derivatives or zero crossings. It is felt that the principal value of this volume is in the multitude of curves included. The analyst dealing with elliptical cases can, by inspection of the curves, find values of the functions and derivatives at the origin, maxima and minima, zero crossings, and qualitative behavior of the plots as a function of several parameters. To the author's knowledge, this is the most extensive presentation of plotted information. It is hoped that the information will be helpful in the solution of practical problems. This book is divided into two sections. Section I deals only with the functions themselves, defining the equations and terminology used and presenting the tabular data and curves. Section II treats the derivatives and the zeros. Again the terminology and equations for the first derivatives are given. The Mathieu functions are named after Emile L. Mathieu (1835-1890), a French mathematician, who in 1868 published an article dealing with vibratory movement of the elliptic membrane. The asteroid 27947 Emilemathieu is named in his honor

    Mathieu Ichou, Les Enfants d’immigrés à l’école

    No full text
It is common to hear in the fields of educational and immigration sociology that on average, the children of immigrants do not perform as well in school as children of native-born parents. Mathieu Ichou offers an innovative sociological analysis on a topic that is heavily exploited by political and media discourse, and subject to much scientific controversy. The author takes distance from the homogenized vision of a “second generation” of students who have totally failed academically, and rep..
