This short article discusses an emerging trend in the information-seeking behaviour of scientists, i.e. mere reliance on online information. Based on a study of physicists and astronomers, this article shows that more scientists now assume that if articles are of enough quality and significance, they must be available online and vice versa. Though still in a low minority, a number of scientists believe that what is not available online is not worth the effort to obtain it

As a part of a wider doctoral research, this paper deals with the communication and information-seeking behavior of research (PhD) students in physics and astronomy. Based on a qualitative case study of PhD students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London, this study seeks to derive behavioral patterns in information-seeking activities of PhD students. The study aims to investigate the intradisciplinary differences in information-seeking activities of physicists and astronomers. The findings show the high reliance of PhD students in physics and astronomy on electronic journals and their low use of libraries. The findings reveal differences in the information-seeking patterns of students who conduct theoretical research and those of whom are involved in experimental research. The research highlights the need for the study of small subject communities within academic disciplines instead of studying users in a broad subject area such as physics as one single domain

Purpose – The study examines two aspects of information seeking behaviour of physicists and astronomers including methods applied for keeping up-to-date and methods used for finding articles. The relationship between academic status and research field of users with their information seeking behaviour was investigated. Methodology/approach – Data were gathered using a questionnaire survey of PhD students and staff of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London; 114 people (47.1 per cent response rate) participated in the survey. Findings – The study reveals differences among subfields of physics and astronomy in terms of information-seeking behaviour, highlights the need for and the value of looking at narrower subject communities within disciplines for a deeper understanding of the information behaviour of scientists. Originality/value – The study is the first study to deeply investigate intradisciplinary dissimilarities of information-seeking behaviour of scientists in a discipline. It is also an up-to-date account of information seeking behaviour of physicists and astronomers

Pt–M (M = Au and Tl) Dative Bonds Using Bis(cyclometalated)platinum(II) Complexes

Symmetrical and unsymmetrical biscyclometalated platinum(II) complexes [Pt(ptpy)2], 1, and [Pt(ptpy)(bppy)], 2, in which ptpy = deprotonated 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine and bppy = deprotonated 2-(3-bromophenyl)pyridine, have been prepared from the reaction between tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane, B(C6F5)3 and 1 equiv of monocyclometalated complexes [PtMe(ptpy)(ptpyH)], B, and [PtMe(ptpy)(bppyH)], C, respectively. The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The reaction of 1 with 1 equiv of TlPF6 or [Au(PPh3)]OTF resulted in the production of heteronuclear complexes [Pt(ptpy)2Tl]PF6, 3 and {Pt(ptpy)2[Au(PPh3)]}OTF, 4, respectively. X-ray diffraction data showed that in solid state, complex 4 exists as a mixture of supported and unsupported PtII–AuI-bonded structures, whereas complex 3 consists of an infinite helical chain structure built up by unsupported Pt–Tl dative bonds. Absorption, emission, and NMR spectroscopy data showed that both Pt–Tl and Pt–Au bonds in 3 and 4 have dynamic behavior. The low-temperature 1H, 31P{1H}, and exchange spectroscopy NMR of 4 revealed two dynamic behaviors involving the rupture of the Au–Cipso bond as well as the dissociation–association of the [Au(PPh3)]+ and Pt(ptpy)2 fragments. All complexes displayed bright emission in the solid state, and their absorption and emission properties have been investigated both experimentally and by time-dependent density functional theory calculations

    Get PDF
Libraries have been established and always utilized in old fashion and modern school and academic environments in order to support educational programs. However, new instructional technologies have changed traditional library-based teaching models. Multimedia approach has shown successful in teaching different courses to different learners. However, there is little known how a combination of library and multimedia approach can be implemented and measured in teaching. This paper focuses on an innovative approach in which a blended library and multimedia model has been developed to teach geography concepts. It was implemented in teaching geography in a first grade class in an Iranian secondary school. The empirical results revealed the effectiveness of the blended model in learning and retention of geography

    Get PDF
Title of an article can be descriptive, declarative or a question. It plays important role in both marketing and findability of article. We investigate the impact of the type of article titles on the number of citations and downloads articles receive. Number of downloads and citations for all articles published in six of PLoS (Public Library of Science) journals (2172 articles) were obtained from PLoS and type of each article's title (including descriptive, indicative and question) was determined as well as the number of substantive words in title (title length). Statistical difference and correlation tests were carried out. The findings showed that differences exist between articles with different types of titles in terms of downloads and citations, especially articles with question titles tended to be downloaded more but cited less than the others. Articles with longer titles were downloaded slightly less than the articles with shorter titles. Titles with colon tended to be longer and receive fewer downloads and citations. As expected, number of downloads and citations were positively correlated
