Measurement of the Thermoelectric Properties of Individual Nanostructures
The advent of nanotechnology and nanomaterials is opening new perspectives for the achievement of efficient solid-state heat converters. After decades of slow progress, in recent years innovative ideas have been put forward to improve the thermodynamic conversion efficiency and, as a consequence, new thermoelectric nanomaterials have been developed. A key and challenging ingredient for the progress of this research ambit is today the refinement of precise methods for the measurement of the thermoelectric parameters of nanostructures
Polymer nanocomposites based on P3OT, TPU and SWNT: Preparation and characterization
Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were incorporated in polymer nanocomposites based on poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) or a blend of them. Thermogravimetry demonstrated the success of the purification procedure employed in the chemical treatment of SWNTs prior to composite preparation. Stable dispersions of SWNTs in chloroform were obtained by non-covalent interactions with the dissolved polymers. Composites exhibited glass transitions, melting temperatures and heat of fusion which changed in relation to pure polymers. This behavior is discussed as associated to interactions between nanotubes and polymers. The conductivity at room temperature of the blend (TPU-P3OT) with SWNT is higher than the P3OT/SWNT composite

Deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), photoluminescence (PL), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements have been made on n-type silicon after implanting with 5.6 MeV Si3+ ions using doses of 10(9)-10(14) cm(-2) and anneals at 525 and 750 degrees C. In all the samples, there is only a small dependence of the widths and energies of the PL zero-phonon lines on implantation dose, allowing the high resolution of PL to be exploited. In samples annealed at 525 degrees C, the PL intensity can provide a measure of the concentration of defects over the implantation range, 10(9)-10(12) cm(-2). Carbon-hydrogen complexes are identified as transient species with increasing dose, and the "T" center is related to a DLTS trap 0.20 eV below the conduction band energy E-c. At the highest doses in these samples, TEM imaging shows the presence of nanometer-sized clusters, and the PL spectra show that many previously unreported defects exist in the implanted zone, in addition to two broad bands centered on similar to 885 and similar to 930 MeV. The multiplicity of defects supports recent suggestions that a range of interstitial complexes is present in the annealed samples. Annealing at 750 degrees C produces complete recovery in both the DLTS and PL spectra for doses of less than 10(13) cm(-2). At higher doses, {113} self-interstitial aggregates are observed in TEM, along with the "903" PL signal associated with the {113} defects, and the E-c-0.33 eV "KA" DLTS trap. These data support the recent identification of that trap with the {113} defects. The well-resolved PL spectra show that many previously reported defects also exist in samples implanted with a dose of 10(14) cm(-2) and annealed at 750 degrees C, again implying the presence of a range of interstitial complexes. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods

Understanding the kink formation in GaAs/InAs heterostructural nanowires
The kinks formation in heterostructural nanowires was observed to be dominant when InAs nanowires were grown on GaAs nanowires. Nanowires were grown through vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism in an MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) reactor. GaAs nanowires were grown in [1 1 1 ]B direction on a GaAs (1 1 1 )B substrate. When InAs nanowires grown on the GaAs nanowires, most of the InAs nanowires changed their growth directions from [1 1 1 ]B to other 〈111〉B directions. The kinks formation is ascribed to the large compressive misfit strain at the GaAs/InAs interface (7.2% lattice mismatch between GaAs and InAs) and the high mobility of indium species during MOCVD growth. The in-depth analysis of the kinks formation was done by growing InAs for short times on the GaAs nanowires and characterizing the samples. The hindrance to compressively strain InAs to form coherent layers with GaAs pushed the InAs/Au interfaces to the sides of the GaAs nanowires growth ends. New InAs/Au interfaces have generated at the sides of GaAs nanowires, due to lateral growth of InAs on GaAs nanowires. These new interfaces led the InAs nanowires growth in other 〈111〉B directions. The morphological and structural features of these heterostructural kinked nanowires were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. © 2006 IEEE
The Right to Strike under the United States Constitution: Theory, Practice, and Possible Implications for Canada
Answering critics of the Canadian Supreme Court's judgment in B.C. Health, the author argues that the Court laid the foundation for a principled and durable doctrine protecting constitutional labour rights, one that goes directly to the heart of the matter — the inequality of workers’ power in the employment relation. In the author’s view, two paths could lead from B.C. Health to the recognition of Charter protec- tion for a right to strike: one that treats the right as an accessory to col- lective bargaining, and one that upholds the right directly on the basis of the Charter values of equality and participation. The author supports the latter approach, contending that constitutional rights should be defined in relation to fundamental values, in a way that is not contingent on time-bound or fact-sensitive assessments about the role of strikes within a particular collective bargaining regime. Although a Charter right to strike may involve the courts in difficult choices about when to defer to legislative policy decisions, and courts may lack the institutional capac- ity to deal effectively with labour law issues, the author points out that judges can look to ILO standards for expert guidance. Noting that the U.S. experience in this area might be of considerable use to Canadians, the author concludes by providing an overview of American case law concerning a constitutional right to strike.Peer reviewe
