This thin book of 106 pages contains, as the T of C at the end shows, forty-two fables, with appendices offering Gellert's statements about himself, Gellert and bibliophiles, and excerpts from literary exercises of Gellert's. The fables are portioned out in their original books. The pictures, which come out quite dark here, include an enlarged medallion of Gellert (frontispiece); Die Nachtigall und die Lerche (9); Der Tanzbär (13, perhaps the best of the lot); Damötas und Phyllis (35); Der arme Greis (67); Die Bauern und der Amtmann (77); Die Frau und der Geist (81); Hanns Nord (83); and Der Held und der Reitknecht (89). I checked out several fables here that are new to me: Die zärtliche Frau (41); Der zärtliche Mann (43); and Der junge Drescher (59).This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: GermanAusgewählt und mit einem Nachwort versehen von Professor Dr. Fritz Behren

Handwritten memoir, accompanied by a typed transcription, about daily life and schooling in Neustettin during the early 19th century. The narrator appears to have been born in Neustettin in 1805. Much of the memoir recounts the effects of various military events, especially the Napoleonic Wars, on family life. The manuscript is accompanied by a Littauer family tree, tracing the family genealogy back to Moses Littauer (circa 1720-1780) of Breslau. The author of the memoir is uncertain. According to the accompanying family tree, he is not Rudolf Littauer's paternal grandfather. The author is probably Rudolf Littauer’s maternal great-grandfather, Bernhard Behrend (born 1805 in Neustettin).Processed for digitizationdigitize

Herero annual parades: commemorating to create

No full text
Herero society in Namibia continually draws from a bundle of loose characteristics - related to behaviour, clothing, ritual, food, or other things - which are combined in various ways to form stereotypes of what is considered to be 'Herero'. One of the occasions where unconnected characteristics come to be grouped together into what is defined as typically Herero is the annual Herero commemorations of the dead. This article discusses the way in which these ceremonies construct and proclaim an ideal type of Herero society. It gives a description of the 'Otjigreenie' ceremony held at Okaseta on 17 and 18 August 1991, as observed by the author, outlines the history of these commemoration ceremonies, sketches the involvement of the Herero in informal ethnographic endeavours regarding their culture and society, and describes what appear to be some of the essential features of the Herero commemoration ceremonies. The article shows that the commemorations serve a threefold function: they allow Herero society to process and overcome traumatic events of the past; they lay claims to the land; and they are a site where, through performance, an ideal type of a united and harmonious Herero society is presented. ASC – Publicaties niet-programma gebonde

On the sheaf-theoretic SL(2, C) Casson–Lin invariant

No full text
We prove that the (τ-weighted, sheaf-theoretic) SL(2, C) Casson–Lin invariant introduced by Manolescu and the first author is generically independent of the parameter τ and additive under connected sums of knots in integral homology 3-spheres. This addresses two questions asked by Manolescu and the first author. Our arguments involve a mix of topology and algebraic geometry, and rely crucially on the fact that the SL(2, C) Casson–Lin invariant admits an alternative interpretation via the theory of Behrend functions.</p

\u27The Grittiness of Being Human\u27 : Individualizing Sexual Expectations in Adichie\u27s Novels

No full text
Critics of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie\u27s novels identify her as a nationalist author, as representing the voices on the periphery, and as advocating for multiple voices and perspectives. Critics have also largely dismissed sexual experience as a factor in her representations and have regarded her graphic descriptions of intimacy as mere entertainment or as a means to provoke criticism. I will argue that Adichie does include many instances of sexual intimacy in her novels, not as an escape from the tough subjects that she details, but to express the effects of public problems on individuals. Ultimately, the complexity of sexual experience in her novels demonstrates that sexual intimacy for women can exist outside of the expectation of motherhood. In this project, I will analyze the abundant descriptions of sexual experience in Adichie\u27 s novels Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah to determine the parallels between intimate moments and public turmoil. I will contrast Adichie\u27s novels with other depictions of female protagonists and their relationships to sexual experience, particularly by Igbo-Nigerian women authors. Adichie\u27s work stands out from other accounts because of the variety of sexual experiences, ranging from uplift to caution to fantasy fulfillment, and the noticeable rift between motherhood and intimacy not typical in depictions Igbo-Nigerian women. I have found these unique representations of female sexual experience defy stereotypical representations, which Adichie identifies as an important practice for better understanding of individual variation within a culture. Adichie, while addressing an international audience, directs the representation of sexual experience to fellow Nigerian women as a means of empowering them to have varied sexual experiences outside of expected motherhood roles

A fluorescent host-guest complex of cucurbituril in solution: a molecular Jack O'Lantern

No full text
Fluorescence enhancement of a probe molecule in solution by the container molecule cucurbituril (CB) is reported for the first time. The fluorescence of the probe 2-anilinonaphthalene-6-sulfonate (2,6-ANS) in aqueous Na2SO4 solution is found to increase by a maximum factor of 5.0 upon addition of cucurbituril. This fluorescence enhancement is the result of the formation of a host-guest inclusion complex, in which the guest 2,6-ANS is incorporated inside the cavity of the host, cucurbituril. Measurement of the enhancement as a function of cucurbituril concentration yielded a value of the equilibrium constant (K) of 52 +/- 10 M-1. It is proposed that the mode of inclusion involves the phenyl group of the 2,6-ANS, because of the relatively small size of the cucurbituril cavity. It is further proposed that the observed enhancement is a result of loss of rotational mobility of the phenyl ring relative to the naphthyl fluorophore of 2,6-ANS upon inclusion of the phenyl ring, Since the name cucurbituril is derived from the Latin word for "pumpkin," this fluorescent host-guest complex is referred to as a "molecular Jack O'Lantern," with the 2,6-ANS serving as the candle.PT: J; CR: BEHREND R, 1905, LIEBIGS ANN CHEM, V339, P1 BORTOLUS P, 1996, ADV PHOTOCHEMISTRY P, P1 BUSCHMANN HJ, 1992, J INCLUS PHENOM MOL, V14, P91 BUSCHMANN HJ, 1997, J INCLUS PHENOM MOL, V29, P167 BUSCHMANN HJ, 1998, THERMOCHIM ACTA, V317, P95 BUSCHMANN HJ, 1999, J PHOTOCH PHOTOBIO A, V121, P99 CINTAS P, 1994, J INCLUS PHENOM MOL, V17, P205 CRAM DJ, 1997, CONTAINER MOL THEIR DANTZ DA, 1998, SUPRAMOL CHEM, V9, P79 DELAPENA AM, 1993, J INCLUS PHENOM MOL, V15, P131 DIAMOND D, 1996, CHEM SOC REV, V25, P15 FREEMAN WA, 1981, J AM CHEM SOC, V103, P7367 HOFFMANN R, 1994, J CHEM SOC FARADAY T, V90, P1507 JEON YM, 1996, J AM CHEM SOC, V118, P9790 KOSOWER EM, 1975, J AM CHEM SOC, V97, P2167 KOSOWER EM, 1978, J AM CHEM SOC, V100, P4179 LI S, 1992, CHEM REV, V92, P1457 MOCK WL, 1983, J ORG CHEM, V48, P3618 MOCK WL, 1995, TOP CURR CHEM, V175, P1 MOCK WL, 1996, COMPREHENSIVE SUPRAM, V2, P477 WAGNER BD, 1998, J PHOTOCH PHOTOBIO A, V114, P151 WAGNER BD, 1999, J PHYS CHEM B, V103, P10114 WAGNER BD, 2000, J INCL PHENOM MACRO, V38, P467 WHANG DM, 1998, J AM CHEM SOC, V120, P4899; NR: 24; TC: 16; J9: CAN J CHEM; PG: 4; GA: 473RESource type: Electronic(1

This master's thesis deals with the rule of legality, and the powers of independent appeals and ruling committees regarding the Constitution of the Republic of Iceland, with special emphasis on the opinion of the Parliamentary Ombudsman. In 2018, the Parliamentary Ombudsman carried out an initiative examination in which he examined the position of independent appeals and ruling committees to the effect that they did not consider themselves competent to discuss and take a position on the constitutional validity of laws. In his own-initiative inquiry, the Ombudsman also examined whether the committees were entitled to refrain from implementing laws passed by Alþingi in a constitutional manner and base the resolution of a case on the fact that the law violates the Constitution. In this thesis the author examines the opinion of the Ombudsman concerning the rule of legality from 1993 to the end of 2018, with the aim of shedding light on how often in these years the Ombudsman considered administrative decisions to have been in accordance with the law, and how often not. The Ombudsman's initiative examination will also be analyzed, and the rulings of the committees he mentions will be examined, as the parties to the case based them on the fact that the decision of the administration had not been in accordance with the law. For comparison, the rulings of two other independent appeals and ruling committees, which were chosen at random, will be examined with the aim of seeing whether a similar position on their competence has emerged. The rulings of the committees under discussion in this thesis, which has been ruled on since the end of 2018, will then be examined. The purpose of that is to shed light on whether the rulings of the committees imply that they have considered the general views that the Ombudsman takes in his own-initiative examination
