State of the art of HFE variants Is it possible to repair HFE with appropriate perturbations?
HFE (that stands for Hidden Field Equations) belongs to
multivariate cryptography and was designed by Jacques Patarin in 1996
as a public key trapdoor suitable for encryption or signature. This original basic version is unfortunately known to have a super-polynomial
attack, but as imagined since the beginning, it comes with various variants, one can describe as combinations of “modifiers”.
In this work, we first present the state of the art of these HFE modifiers,
along with their effect on the complexity of the main cryptanalysis techniques against HFE-based schemes. This allows us, in a second time, to
identify a combination of two modifiers that has not yet been explored
and may still be secure with efficient parameters. Based on our analysis,
we propose a new signature scheme that offers extremely short signature
sizes, with reasonable public key sizes and performance. In particular, we
rely on the classical Feistel-Patarin technique to reduce signature sizes
below two times the security parameter

Tweakable block ciphers are a generalization of classical block ciphers which, in addition to a key and a plaintext or a ciphertext, take an additionnal parameter called a tweak. The goal of this new parameter is to bring variability to the block cipher without needing to change the key or to keep the tweak secret. The tweak should also be adversariallycontrollable without sacrificing security. In this thesis we study a particular class of block ciphers, namely key-alternating ciphers. More precisely, we study the security of the Even-Mansour scheme, which is an abstraction of these ciphers in the random permutation model, and seek to bring tweakability to this scheme while keeping strong security guarantees. To this end, we introduce a new generic construction, dubbed TEM, which replaces the round keys from the Even-Mansour construction by a value depending on both the key and the tweak, and study its security in two cases: when the tweak and key mixing is linear or highly non-linear. Our security proofs rely on the H-coefficients technique, a technique introduced by Jacques Patarin in his PhD thesis which transforms cryptographic problems into combinatorial problems in finite groups.Les algorithmes de chiffrement par blocs paramétrables constituent une généralisation des algorithmes de chiffrement par blocs classiques qui, en plus d'une clé et d'un message à chiffrer ou déchiffrer, admettent un paramètre additionnel, nommé tweak en anglais. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
QUAD: Overview and Recent Developments
We give an outline of the specification and provable security
features of the QUAD stream cipher proposed at Eurocrypt 2006.
The cipher relies on the iteration of a multivariate system of quadratic
equations over a finite field, typically GF(2) or a small extension. In the
binary case, the security of the keystream generation can be related, in
the concrete security model, to the conjectured intractability of the MQ
problem of solving a random system of m equations in n unknowns. We
show that this security reduction can be extended to incorporate the key
and IV setup and provide a security argument related to the whole stream
cipher.We also briefly address software and hardware performance issues
and show that if one is willing to pseudorandomly generate the systems
of quadratic polynomials underlying the cipher, this leads to suprisingly
inexpensive hardware implementations of QUAD
... : Variations around two schemes of T. Matsumoto and H. Imai
In [4], H. Imai and T. Matsumoto presented some new candidate trapdoor one-way permutations with a public key given as multivariate polynomials over a finite field. One of these schemes was later presented in [7] under the name C , and was based on the idea of hiding a monomial field equation. This scheme was broken in [8] by Jacques Patarin, due to unexpected algebraic properties. J. Patarin and L. Goubin then suggested ([9], [10], [11], [12]) some schemes to repair C , but this was done at the cost of slightly more complex public key or secret key computations. In part I of this paper, we will study some very simple variations of the C scheme, where the attack of [8] is avoided, and where the very simple secret key computations are kept. The C \Gamma+ scheme will be one of these variations. We will design some new cryptanalysis that are efficient against some of -- but not all -- these variations. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
