Winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama A darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity is Suzan-Lori Parks latest riff on the way we are defined by history. The play tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke, foretelling a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by the past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future. Suzan-Lori Parks is the author of numerous plays, including In the Blood and Venus. She is currently head of the A.S.K. Theater Projects Writing for Performance Program at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. Abstract from eBook Central

    Carter, Reagan et l'Amérique centrale

Carter, Reagan and Central America, by Suzan Kaufman Purcell In this article the author attempts to show that, overall, the differences between policy during the last year of Jimmy Carter's Presidency and the present Reagan administration are minimal. Jimmy Carter reneged on his initial generous inclinations and gave increasing support to repression in El Salvador, whilst Reagan quickly stopped short of opting for all-out support of the military in El Salvador. In both cases, one must take account of divisions within the American electorate which influence Washington's policy decisions in Central America. They have created contradictions between the intention and the reality of the American polity. Abstract : Suzan-Lori Parks is one of the U.S. most recognized playwrights of the current generation. In this work, we analyze the trajectory of the author and her poetic, trace relationships between their texts and reflect on the phenomenon of translation as a form of art and on literary translator as a kind of artist. Based on the theory of authors like Antoine Berman (2013) - "translation and the letter" e Pavis (2008), "the translator as playwright" this work also presents an analysis of our own translation of Parks?s play Topdog / Underdog - the author?s work of greater impact, with which she won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. We also propose dialogue with other translations of the play, its performances and paratextual or intertextual elements such as posters, covers of publications, gambling or cultural artifacts from both source culture and target culture that serve as mediators for our translation process

The historical study of book illustration points up the role of textual ideologies in determining how images are used and presented in educational publications and in the educational process itself. Comparative analysis of the 1761 illustrated dictionary Le Notionaire and its 1807 reedition, L’Encyclopédie des jeunes gens, shows that, despite the reuse of selected copperplate engravings and imitation of page layout, the relationship between text and image is recast by the XIXth century educator-author Moustalon, whose rewriting and amplification of his source can be seen as representative of the renewed importance given to rhetoric and rhetorical training in the school curricula of post-revolutionary France.L’étude historique des pratiques de mise en livre de l’image permet de dégager l’influence des idéologies du texte et du document sur la pédagogie par l’image. Kovacs Suzan. Searching, Learning, and Subtopic Ordering: A Simulation-Based Analysis

    No full text
Complex search tasks—such as those from the Search as Learning (SAL) domain—often result in users developing an information need composed of several aspects. However, current models of searcher behaviour assume that individuals have an atomic need, regardless of the task. While these models generally work well for simpler informational needs, we argue that searcher models need to be developed further to allow for the decomposition of a complex search task into multiple aspects. As no searcher model yet exists that considers both aspects and the SAL domain, we propose, by augmenting the Complex Searcher Model (CSM), the Subtopic Aware Complex Searcher Model (SACSM)—modelling aspects as subtopics to the user’s need. We then instantiate several agents (i.e., simulated users), with different subtopic selection strategies, which can be considered as different prototypical learning strategies (e.g., should I deeply examine one subtopic at a time, or shallowly cover several subtopics?). Finally, we report on the first large-scale simulated analysis of user behaviours in the SAL domain. Results demonstrate that the SACSM, under certain conditions, simulates user behaviours accurately.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Web Information System

Evaluating the Robustness of Retrieval Pipelines with Query Variation Generators

    No full text
Heavily pre-trained transformers for language modeling, such as BERT, have shown to be remarkably effective for Information Retrieval (IR) tasks, typically applied to re-rank the results of a first-stage retrieval model. IR benchmarks evaluate the effectiveness of retrieval pipelines based on the premise that a single query is used to instantiate the underlying information need. However, previous research has shown that (I) queries generated by users for a fixed information need are extremely variable and, in particular, (II) neural models are brittle and often make mistakes when tested with modified inputs. Motivated by those observations we aim to answer the following question: how robust are retrieval pipelines with respect to different variations in queries that do not change the queries’ semantics? In order to obtain queries that are representative of users’ querying variability, we first created a taxonomy based on the manual annotation of transformations occurring in a dataset (UQV100) of user-created query variations. For each syntax-changing category of our taxonomy, we employed different automatic methods that when applied to a query generate a query variation. Our experimental results across two datasets for two IR tasks reveal that retrieval pipelines are not robust to these query variations, with effectiveness drops of ≈ 20 % on average. The code and datasets are available at https://github.com/Guzpenha/query_variation_generators.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Web Information System

Characterization of ethanol induced protein gels by ultra-small angle x-ray scattering and rheological measurements

Gelation is one of the main functions of food proteins. Protein gelation has been utilized to improve physical properties of protein-based products or for delivery of bioactive compounds. On the other hand, the control of gelation is very important to prevent formation of gel network which may affect performance of the process or final physicochemical properties of product. In this research, gelation mechanism of two different proteins, zein and whey protein, were examined in ethanol-water mixture. Zein is an amphiphilic protamine which is capable of self-assembly into distinctly different structures. Self-assembly of zein at high protein concentrations was studied in binary solvent systems of ethanol and water. Ultra-small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) was used to characterize zein ensembles formed in aqueous ethanol. The results showed that zein assemblies possessed three levels of structural hierarchy. Zein formed rod-like structures at one dimension (1D) which self-assembled into two dimensional (2D) platelet-like structures. Platelet-like structures were organized to form spherical assemblies. In presence of oleic acid, zein interacted with oleic acid by forming 1D structure different than rod shape and larger platelet-like structures compared to 2D zein assemblies. Oleic acid facilitated formation of spherical structures with smooth surfaces. It was observed that self-assembly caused transition from sol to gel state in some conditions which depended on protein concentration and ethanol content of solution. Rheological measurements showed how the viscoelastic properties of zein samples altered with gelation and gel stiffness was increased as the protein concentration was increased. Oleic acid incorporated gels significantly higher storage modulus than zein gels. Raman spectroscopy suggests that gelation was driven by transition from α-helix to β-sheet conformation. The aggregation and gelation behavior of whey protein in alcohol-water mixture was investigated with rheological measurements. To examine the effect of whey protein composition, whey protein concentrate (WPC) and whey protein isolate (WPI) were used. Instant gelation of WPI in ethanol-water mixture was observed at 10% (w/v) and above protein concentrations where the gel stiffness increased as ethanol content of solution was increased. WPC showed different viscoelastic properties in varying ethanol contents than WPI counterparts. The gel network established in 20% WPC collapsed by further addition of ethanol to adjust final ethanol content to 60% (v/v). Ethanol-induced protein gelation mechanism was utilized for stabilization of lutein-in-safflower oil emulsions in whey protein gel matrix. Stabilization of droplets were achieved for both nanoscale and microscale droplets. As the process does not involve any heat treatments, lutein was well-preserved throughout the process. X-ray diffraction data showed no evidence of lutein crystallization, suggesting that lutein remained dispersed within the oil droplets. The results of this study demonstrated that proteins could form gel network in presence of ethanol. This research can help to control of structure formation through self-assembly in zein film production and to formulate hydrophobic or hydrophilic compound incorporated protein gel delivery systems.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2018-12-01The student, Suzan Uzun, accepted the attached license on 2016-11-07 at 14:17.The student, Suzan Uzun, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-11-07 at 14:50.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-11-15 at 11:20.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10221 on 2017-02-28 at 14:36:13Made available in DSpace on 2017-03-01T16:36:45Z (GMT). In this study, the information about Abdulkerîm el-Muderris's life and his period has been given and his book called Mevâhibu'r-Rahman has been introduced and some subject about Grammatical Syntax inside that book have been detected and evaluated. Abdulkerîm el-Muderris, who was grown up at Iraq's land and one of the exceptional personality of our time, occupied with knowledge and educated a lot of students during all of his life. El- Muderris, in addition to educating students, wrote a lot of book in the various fields such as hadith, fıkh, language, the history of Prophet and the ethic. One of the significant books that el-Muderris wrote was that titled as Mevâhibu'r-Rahmân fî Tefsîri'l-Kur'ân. His that book includes many information about Grammatical Syntax, Syntax Dictionary ve Rhetoric which are the subsections of the science of Arab language. That book includes a lot of information about hadith, fıkh, the history of Prophet and the history in addition to mentioned sciences. There is more information about Grammatical Syntax than other linguistic information inside the Mevâhibu'r-Rahmân. When el- Muderris gave information about Nahiv in his book, at the same time presents views of philologists, mentions some debates that occurred between those philologist and submits philologist's evidence and proofs that to strength their opinions. The author, at the same, besides those views has declared his opinions and preferences. He uses the used hearin and analogy to support his preference opinion. Although the author generally preferred the views that belong to Majority and Basra School, he never has had an intolerance to other different denominations. Because when the author analyzes the verses, he preferred the views appropriating to the meanings of the verses without linking to any other school
