A 60 000-year record of environmental change for the Wet Tropics of north-eastern Australia based on the ODP 820 marine core

    No full text
Palynomorphs from the ODP Site 820 marine core have provided a detailed record of terrestrial environmental responses to glacial–interglacial forcing over the last 250 000 years in the Australian Wet Tropics. The development of an accurate geochronological framework for this key sequence has proved challenging. Consequently, different dominant forcing mechanism(s) have been proposed to drive environmental change in the low latitudes. A new chronology for the last 60 000 years, based on accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (C) dates of pollen concentrate material and the existing Marine Isotope Stage boundaries (MIS 4 to 1) has been produced. This new chronology provides a robust geochronological framework for interpreting environmental records across the region. In particular, our age model helps to resolve several debates concerning the timing of climatic changes and their impacts on both the marine and the terrestrial systems, as well as possible human arrival and associated impacts on the region's ecosystems. Our findings suggest C dating of terrestrial pollen concentrate in marine sediments is a valuable tool for resolving major chronological uncertainties in potentially diagenetically altered marine CaCO sediments and should play a role in future multi-dating strategies. But Is It Art? Female Performers in the Café-Concert

    No full text
The Café-Concert as an object of study has tended to attract the interest of art rather than theatre historians, despite the fact that it was the major form of popular entertainment in France during the nineteenth century. Similar but not identical to the English music hall of the same period, the Café-Concert produced a number of stars of national importance, a large majority of whom were women. Through the writings of journalists and commentators of the period, this article explores how these female performers were perceived and constructed as objects of the public gaze. The author, Geraldine Harris, is a Lecturer in Theatre Studies at the University of Lancaster, with interests in both popular and feminist theatre

14C in uranium and thorium minerals: a signature of cluster radioactivity?

    No full text
Various uranium and thorium minerals have been analysed with accelerator mass spectrometry to determine their C-14 content. It is found that, whenever the contribution from secondary reactions such as the B-11(alpha, p)C-14 is sufficiently low, the C-14 Concentration is consistent with that expected from C-14 (spontaneous) cluster radioactivity from radium isotopes of the uranium and thorium natural series

AMS measurement of I-129, Cl-36 and C-14 in underground waters from Mururoa and Fangataufa atolls

    No full text
AMS analyses of Cl-36, I-129 and C-14 in underground water have been performed as part of IAEA's assessment of the radiological situation at Mururoa and Fangataufa atolls. The samples consisted of waters from monitoring wells, and from two cavity-chimneys created by underground nuclear tests. The water samples from the monitoring wells contained varying concentrations of radionuclides, with the highest concentrations of radionuclides found in the two test cavity-chimneys. A comparison of the concentrations of radionuclides determined by AMS, Cl-36 and I-129, and with radionuclides determined using conventional methods, H-3, Sr-90 and Cs-137, shows a reasonable correlation. However, some differences in behaviour, mainly attributed to differences in the sorption characteristics of the elements, are discernible. The concentrations of radionuclides in the underground environment were used to validate geosphere transport models

Ballads and Songs of Southern Michigan

    No full text
This book presents old-time Michigan, its songs and their tunes, collected and edited by Emelyn E. Gardner, a folklorist of wide experience, the author of Folklore from the Schoharie Hills, with the aid of Geraldine Jencks Chickering.Michigan's early settlers, coming from the older eastern states, both north and south, with many from England, Scotland, and the British North American possessions, brought with them their songs, which they sang happily at work and play, handing them down from generation to generation, and often adapting centuries-old ballads to their new environment. Many worked for a time in the woods and picked up the mournful, or jolly, ballads that were circulated through the camps by lumberjacks drifting in from the Maine and Canadian forests. There are old folks still alive who treasure these ancient songs, and young people who have learned them from their parents and grandparents—or even from the radio.Ballads and Songs of Southern Michigan collects and preserves these cherished possessions of the old frontier. With scholarly accuracy their history is recounted; the names of those who sang them are reported. The tunes of many are reproduced; there are ample indices and bibliography. Wilfred B. Shaw's ink drawings add much to the charm of the book. It is a worthy addition both to the literature of folklore and balladry, and to that of pioneer American history

    You’re a Published Author!

Once a nurse author writes a quality manuscript, the article is submitted to an appropriate journal, reviewed by the editor, and sent to review panel members with expertise consistent with the topic of the article or the methodology of research articles. After review, panel members recommend the article be published, accepted for publication after revision, revised without promise of publication, or rejected. Nurse authors have options as to how they handle the recommendation. To successfully publish in a peer-reviewed journal, nurse authors should communicate with the editor and realize that the editor and author have the same goals

A Card Based Metaphor for Organising Pervasive Educational Experiences

    No full text
This paper looks at the card metaphor used successfully in the Equator Ambient Wood and Chawton House projects to structure and author content as part of innovative school field trips using wireless and ubiquitous technologies. The framework provided by the metaphor is laid out and observations made as to how it has been used by domain experts in creating educational experiences. The trade-off between formalisation and restricting pedagogy is examined and key benefits that the metaphor provides are given

Jornais impressos e literatura.

Some time ago it was customary to study literature by placing the figures of the author and their literary projects at the center, paying little attention to the collective contexts of publication (unless they were avant-garde magazines), without considering how and where the letters had acquired the material body that requires thinking about them not only in terms of writing but also in terms of their circulation, in terms of readings and appropriations.
