Measuring gamma radiation with a portable gamma ray spectrometer at a measuring location consisting of multiple rock types

A pilot research was set up to determine the possibilities for using gamma-ray spectrometry to and possible value in mine waste piles. These waste piles consist of different waste rocks without any value and ore that was processed incorrectly. This method, if proven eective, will be used on mine waste from different commodities all over the world. However, there will be started with the waste pile Halde Haniel in the Ruhr area in Germany. The Ruhr area has been selected because of the manageable travelling time from Delft, the long history of coal mining activities in the area and the open-access of the waste pile. The thriving days of coal mining have left us with large amounts of waste piles (170 waste piles in the Ruhr area). Therefore, it will be essential to know if these waste piles have an impact on the environment by emitting gamma radiation. In Europe, this problem has not been addressed. However, in other countries, these waste piles are the cause of increased health risks. The Halde Haniel waste pile is a human-made object and consist mainly of shale, sandstone and bits of coal. Gamma-ray spectrometry is often used to determine lithology of a rock formation. To determine the lithology measurements are done on outcrops present in nature. In most literature gamma-ray spectrometry is used to determine the lithology of rock formations. However, in this research, the measuring location is a human-made object, which has destroyed the natural sequencing of the rocks. Therefore, the measurements taken on the Halde Haniel makes the research more challenging. Therefore, the accuracy of the measurements done on a site consisting of multiple rocks, such as the Halde Haniel, are essential to know in order to apply this method in future research. Field measurements were taken for two dierent reasons. First, a control study was executed in the Green Village in Delft. The main goal of these measurements was to select a correct measuring time for the measurements at the Halde Haniel waste pile. The rest of the measurements were done at the Halde Haniel waste pile. At the Halde Haniel waste pile, four dierent measuring locations were selected. From the results can be concluded that the amount of gamma radiation emitted from the Halde Haniel waste pile is higher than at a location without mining activities. However, this increase is still not high enough to result in health risks. The measuring error could not be determined to a satisfactory standard, because of the lack of soil moisture samples and the signicant impact of soil moisture on the error of measurements. Gamma-ray spectrometry should be supported with information about the lithology and the chemical composition of the rocks, because otherwise nding value in waste piles will be hard

The greater calorie deficit applied to the bodybuilding athlete, the greater their loss of fat-free mass on the stage presentation?

Summary: Background & Aims: The total preparation for a bodybuilding competition basically involves two phases, the preparation phase, and the pre-competition phase, in which both tend to add up on average 32 weeks. During the pre-contest phase, bodybuilding athletes maintain a negative energy balance both by lower energy intake from the diet and by the longer time dedicated to training, to try reducing the body fat percentage, fat-free mass (FFM) maintenance and to present a dense and dry physique on stage in the competition day. Therefore, this work tries to bring a correlation explanation between a greater caloric deficit applied to the bodybuilding athlete during his preparation with the variation in fat free mass between the preparation and pre-contest phases. This way, open the question: “could greater caloric deficits in the bodybuilding athlete's dietary intake be closely correlated with negative changes in fat-free mass for stage performance?” Methods: The author searched PubMed and ScienceDirect databases for recent studies involving the food consumption of bodybuilders when preparing for competition using the keywords “bodybuilding”, “diet” and “preparation”. 16 results were obtained from ScienceDirect and 8 from PubMed. Two cross-sectional studies and two case studies involved the evaluation of the food consumption of forty-four male athletes practicing bodybuilding over eighteen years of age during their preparation that lasted from 5 to 32 weeks. Participants' diet was monitored by self-report. The studies were selected and observationally evaluated by the author regarding the size of the variation in the energy intake and its possible correlation with the variation in the fat-free mass from the beginning of the preparation until the day of the competition. Results: Of the four studies, the greatest average variation in energy intake (final minus initial) exceeded 1700 kcal and the smallest did not reach even 300 kcal. On the other hand, the study with the longest preparation time had the greatest loss of body weight even without applying the greatest energy variation between the studies in table 1 yet had the greatest fat-free mass loss with a worse result than the study with the shortest preparation time. Conclusions: Observationally, higher caloric deficits in the bodybuilding athlete's food intake cannot closely correlated with negative changes in fat-free mass for the stage presentation

Analysis of horizontal displacement distribution caused by single advancing longwall panel excavation

    No full text
The paper presents an analysis of the horizontal displacement of surfaces induced by exploitation in a longwall panel. The panel under discussion is No. 698 of Prosper Haniel coal mine, Germany. The author discusses both the distribution of displacement vectors, according to the theory assuming surface point displacement towards the center of gravitation (COG) zone of a selected deposit element, and the analysis of horizontal displacement measurements, based on the assumption that the value of horizontal displacement is proportional to the slope of the subsidence trough. Finally, the value of horizontal displacement coefficient B is estimated for particular longitudinal and transverse measurement section of the analyzed longwall No. 698

Differences in Social Preferences - Are They Profitable for the Firm?

This paper analyzes the impact of heterogeneous (social) preferences on the weighting and combination of performance measures as well as on a firm’s profitability. We consider rivalry, egoism and altruism as extreme forms within the continuum of possible preferences and show that the principal can typically exploit both the altruistic and rivalistic behavior of his agents. Firm profits reach their maximum value if the agents are differentiated as much as possible in their individual characteristics. We provide further insight; namely, that in order to realize these gains in profitability, it is necessary to reallocate participation in performance measures such that competitive agents are privileged as compared to altruistic agents. In this context, stochastic interdependencies are of importance since they yield overlapping functions of the share parameters, causing additional adaptations in the optimal design of the wage compensation system.Social Preferences; Rivalry; Altruism; Egoism; Team Composition; Performance Measurement
