Questione di confini: diritto, diritti e guerra in Michael Walzer

    No full text
By a comparative analysis of Walzer’ scientific works in the field “social criticism” and “just/unjust war”, the essay shows that the tension between the categories internal/ external is working in the complex of author arguments. Such a contraposition, examined from the strict perspective of the disciplinary languages, which articulate the “modern” moral-historical world, has to be considered constitutive of the separation between juridical and moral paradigm, social acting and communitarian belonging, reasons and meaning, critics and interpretation. Walzer’ attitude to contaminate disciplinary languages, on the contrary, make it impossible for him to investigate the aporetic overcoming from the juridical “boundaries” to political and cultural “frontier”

Guidebook and Resources for Starting Community Supported Enterprises

    No full text
By Norman Walzer, Northern Illinois University, in collaboration with Jacob Smith, NIU, and David Ivan, Michigan State University. (2019) In 2014, the North Central Regional Council for Regional Development published a report that examined 20 Community Supported Enterprises (CSEs) operating across the U.S., plus listed many others in operation at that time (Walzer and Sandoval, 2014). The CSEs mainly involved grocery-related stores and eating establishments typically in small towns. The enterprises fit the CSE model because they had local investment and were motivated by a social purpose, often to build social capital and improve quality of life. In several instances, these CSEs have closed due mainly to adverse financial conditions but with important lessons learned in the process. Others are profitable and flourishing. Growing interest in a CSE approach among public officials and community leaders generated interest in preparing a guidebook to help other groups chart a course to evaluate, and possibly start, a local CSE. Providing that assistance is the main purpose of this guidebook. It is not a manual providing a set course of action because each situation differs in market conditions, financial interests, and willingness of residents to invest or otherwise participate in financing the project. Nevertheless, common features among successful CSEs are highlighted in this Guidebook. It builds on the previous report by examining additional CSEs that vary in organizational structure, goods or services delivered, or financing approaches. In addition, more attention is paid to who was involved in the organizational effort and how the venture was marketed to potential investors. The intent is to provide sufficient information that readers interested in launching a local effort will gain insights into how to proceed even under different scenarios.https://huskiecommons.lib.niu.edu/ctrgovernment-reports/1014/thumbnail.jp

La Nueva Izquierda. 1968 y post scriptum

The author, a well know theorist and activist of the civil rights movement and the movement against the Vietnam War, published the first part of this article in 1968. There, he analyses the emergence of the New Left in the United States –and its global connection– through the social structure, the actors’ class background and their cultural configuration to account for the aspirations and limits that accompanied the middle class youth that lead this movement. The dilemmas that emerged between the racial, ethnic, social and economic axes that defined the actors framed the diverse social movements and throw light on the promises, scope and weaknesses that characterized them. In the post scriptum, written explicitly for the Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales 50 years later with a great analytical and existential wisdom, the author inspects the way in which class profile, radicalization and separatism led to an isolation of the New Left from the natural support basis it should have reached. It evaluates the consequences of its integration either to the Old Left or to the system, as it manifests in the turn towards right that progressive and democratic sectors had in the United States. Furthermore, he underlines the way it influenced the inequality and vulnerability that prevails among the social class –the “precateriat”– the left should have represented, and projects itself in the current situation and in Trumpism. Without a doubt, the depth, realism and theoretical and practical vision of Michael Walzer have turned him into one of the representative figures of political theory. JBL

The Mediocre Growth of a Grandiose Simpleton: An Analysis of Howard Jackobson’s The Mighty Walzer.

The Mighty Walzer is the story of a boy who dreams of winning fame, fortune and the adoration of beautiful women, as a table tennis player. He wants to make his life grandiose like all of us. However, it is a pity that he fails. Oliver, the protagonist is not disheartened. Even though he has not struck his fortune, life gives him other riches- the riches of life and growing up itself. Thus, the novel can be seen as the celebration of the trivial processes of growing up. The more we read, the more we realise that the mediocre lives presented in the novel are grandiose in their own ways. Thus, the author is examining the grandiosities of our mediocre lives. The novel is the life story of each and every one of us. It is the celebration of the simple life of a commoner with its trivialities and mediocrities. However, there is an exuberant grandiosity in this existence. It is this grandiose process of life which is emphasised in this study. Set in the1950s England, The Mighty Walzer is semi-autobiographical. Howard Jacobson in the veil of the character Oliver,Walzer depicts his own self as a confused Jewish boy growing up in Manchester. When it comes to home, nothing is closer to heart than the childhood memories. Jacobson’s the Mighty Walzer is indeed a childhood memoir. The novel is a bildungs roman narrative. It is absolutely hilarious, comic and sublime. It has the grace and charm of a childhood dream. Jacobson’s wit was lauded from all quarters, when the novel was first published. Sunday Times observes: “Jacobson writes with agility that gives pleasure akin to humour even when it isn’t actually funny. It is the sheer charm of his intelligence that feels like wit.” The Independent in its review quotes: “This mature novel has the sustained exuberance and passion of his youthful writing but within an epic…. An achingly funny book….An amazing achievement….There is few novelists today who can imbue the trifles of life with such poetry.” Jacobson wrote this rollicking, loose limbed, semi-autobiographical novel in Australia at the end of 90s, having finally put enough distance between events to revisit the humiliation. He puts before us a number of childhood milieus in a straight forward and grandiose fashion. There is no holding back when it comes to a number of intimate sexual and mental give and takes. It is these truthful ejaculations that make the novel hilarious. One can really denominate the novel in Mario Vargas Illosa’s terms as a piece of ‘mental masturbation.’Howard Jacobson amuses his readers in The Mighty Walzer. The characters and milieus in the novel are regular, common and mediocre. We can connect ourselves with the various characters and their eccentricities. The more we go into the novel, the more we realize that the desires, anxieties, failures, successes, sufferings and frailties of the characters are in fact the mirror reflections of our own milieus. Thus, when we look at with disdain the ‘jacking off’ –of Oliver, Sheeney’s women hunting, Sabine’s promiscuity, Aunt Fay’s mid 30’s love affair etc., we are pitying our own repressed desires and inhibitions. Such is the psychological depth with which each of the characters are handled

[[alternative]]Michael Walzer's 'complex equality' and its application to citizenship education

[[abstract]]Michael Walzer’s ‘Complex Equality’ and its Application to Citizenship Education Wen-hsien Su Abstract In the field of contemporary political philosophy, Michael Walzer undoubtedly occupies a significant position. In his book Spheres of Justice: A defense of pluralism and equality, he put forward his arguments of “complex equality” in an attempt to reinterpret the concept of equality. The primary purpose of this study is to explore and explicate the concept of complex equality, analyze Walzer’s ideas of citizenship, and, by combining them, work out the implications for and application to citizenship education. To sum up, the purposes of this thesis are as follows: 1.To comprehend Michael Walzer’s academic achievements and concerning issues. 2.To analyze Walzer’s “complex equality” and its application to education. 3.To elucidate Walzer’s ideas of citizenship. 4.To elaborate the implications for citizenship education in Walzer’s works. 5.To provide recommendations for citizenship education based on the research results. According to the purposes, the conclusions of this thesis are as follows: 1.The basis of Walzer’s academic works is political pluralism. 2.Abandoning Rawl’s methods of pursuing abstract principles, Walzer takes a different path by appealing to the consensus and interpretation of justice and equality in a society, signaling a turn to the interpretation approach. 3.When defining the meaning of equality, Walzer tries to take into consideration the distribution of all social goods, which is more holistic. 4.Walzer thinks that citizens nowadays are more indifferent to public affairs and less public-spirited, which really deserves our attention. 5.Walzer regards education as an essential social good which has its own distribution sphere. Furthermore, the cultivation of civic virtues should also be incorporated into citizenship education. Finally, the recommendations for citizenship education can be summarized as follows: 1.Under the present context of multicultural societies, what the nation should do is to provide equal opportunities for every group and grant all citizens equal standings and fundamental capacities. 2.We should contemplate and preserve the autonomy of education. Moreover, the closure and autonomy of schools should also be safeguarded. 3.As for the curricular arrangements of citizenship education, the nation should establish core curriculum so as to guarantee all citizens equal fundamental capacities and knowledge. 4.To achieve the goal of developing mature and responsible citizens, the cultivation of civic virtues should also be emphasized.
