Carving a legacy : the identity of Jacob Epstein (1880-1959)

    No full text
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the efforts which were made during the life of Jacob Epstein and at the time his death to fix a particular identity that has thus shaped his legacy. The question that this thesis wishes to address is: how was Jacob Epstein's legacy carved? The first part of this thesis, entitled 'Remembering Epstein', seeks to unpack and examine the written discourse surrounding his death. This will be done by assessing the themes, debates and considerations of Epstein's position in the history of art and will focus on four case studies: the obituaries and memorial pieces that were written immediately after Epstein's death; a memorial service that was held at St. Paul's Cathedral; a failed proposal to tum Epstein's home studio into a museum; and the organisation and critical reception of the Epstein Memorial Exhibition held in Edinburgh in 1961. The second part of this thesis, entitled 'Writing a Legacy', attends to the analysis of texts which were written about or by Epstein throughout his career. This will be done through a close examination of those texts which have come to shape our understanding of Epstein's place in the history of art and will focus on five case studies: the writings of T. E. Hulme; Epstein by Bernard Van Dieren; a series of interviews with Epstein by Arnold Haskell, entitled The Sculptor Speaks; Epstein's role in protesting against repairs to ancient sculpture in the British Museum; and a chapter entitled 'My Place in Sculpture' from the 1954 edition of Epstein's autobiography. The final part of the thesis, entitled 'Selected Works', will focus on six separate sculptures as case studies for assessing different aspects of Epstein's artistic output. The works which will be examined: The Rock Drill (1913), The Risen Christ (1917-19), Madonna and Child (1926-27), Genesis (1929), Albert Einstein (1933), and Madonna and Child (1950-52)

Analysis of Lee Kuan Yew`s memoirs «From Third World to First: The Singapore Story»

Статья посвящена анализу мемуаров первого премьер-министра Сингапура - Ли Куан Ю, а также определению роли автора во внутренней и внешней политике страныThe article provides an analysis of Lee Kuan Yew's memoirs "From Third World to First: The Singapore Story" (2000). In the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the South Asian international affairs and in Singapore`s development. The author of the memoirs as a Prime Minister had the influence on both internal and external reforms held in the country. However, studies on Lee Kuan Yew`s personal approach to the reorganization of Singapore is still lacking. The objective of this article is to determine a role of the author in the development of Singapore and his place in the international relations of the second half of the twentieth century. After gaining independence, the Singaporean government had to secure its sovereignty. In order to do that, a wide range of reforms was carried out. The article concentrates on the main reasons which led the country to success. To illustrate the results of the reforms, additional data from various specialized reports is given. As Lee Kuan Yew played a significant role in international relations, the article gives a comprehensive evaluation of Singaporean relations with other states and Lee Kuan Yew`s influence on them. The thorough analysis of the author`s account of the Singaporean policy is also provide

    Lee region of Gran Canaria

21 páginas, 9 figuras. The mountainous Canary Islands present obstacles to the trade winds and to the Canary Current flowing equatorward past them. In situ observations of hydrographic properties and surface winds south of Gran Canaria, together with advanced very high resolution radiometer and synthetic aperture radar images during 2 weeks in summer 1995 are analyzed. A cyclonic eddy shed from the west of the island drifted southwestward at 5 cm s−1, while the southeast coast was approached by an upwelling filament originating off NW Africa. A wind lee region bounded by intense horizontal shear lines had a weak return islandward wind in its center. The lee formed a triangular, diurnally varying, warm water pool with two sea surface temperature maxima separated by lower temperatures below the return wind. Shallow temperature stratification occurred behind the island in contrast to the uniform surface mixed layer in exposed regions. Upwelling and downwelling of 10 – 20 m d−1 were indicated on the cyclonic and anticyclonic sides of the lee region. In the SAR images, lines of strong current shear along a temperature front between the cyclonic eddy and the upwelling filament were identifiable. However, the radar images were dominated by atmospheric phenomena, including mountain lee wave packets, windrows, and wind shear lines. Estimation of the wind field from the SAR backscatter intensity revealed complex structure and intensification on the edges of the warm lee.The field work was carried out during the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Oceanography 1995 Summer School on Upwelling Systems held at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria funded by the Commission of the European Union and the United Nations Education and Science Organisation. Flament was Investigator in project AO2.USA198 of the European Space Agency, which provided the ERS-1 and 2 data.Peer reviewe

Amending the reflected shock phase of the Lee code

    No full text
The radial reflected shock phase begins when the inward shock front (IS) which is collisional hits the central axis and a reflected shock (RS) is produced that moves radially outward. This phase ends and the pinch phase begins when the outward moving RS front meets the inward moving magnetic piston. The Lee code approximates the RS phase by taking an estimated constant RS speed in the formulation of the code. In this paper we analyse the RS situation in more detail. A physical mechanism is used to obtain the RS speed as functions of position and time during its propagation towards the incoming piston. This is an important amendment to this phase of the code. In computing the RS speed, the temperature variation during the RS phase is also obtained. The speed and temperature versus time profiles are presented demonstrating a more realistic picture than the constant speed and temperature assumption. The temperature-radius profile across the pinch at its start is also derived

Neural Signals Related to Outcome Evaluation Are Stronger in CA1 than CA3

    No full text
We have shown previously that CA1 conveys significant neural signals necessary to update value of the chosen target, namely chosen value and reward signals. To better understand hippocampal neural processes related to valuation, we compared chosen value- and reward-related neural activity between the CA3 and CA1 regions. Single units were recorded with tetrodes from the dorsal CA3 and CA1 regions of rats performing a dynamic foraging task, and chosen value- and reward-related neural activity was estimated using a reinforcement learning model and multiple regression analyses. Neural signals for chosen value and reward converged in both CA3 and CA1 when a trial outcome was revealed. However, these neural signals were stronger in CA1 than CA3. Consequently, neural signals for reward prediction error and updated chosen value were stronger in CA1 than CA3. Together with our previous finding that CA1 conveys stronger value signals than the subiculum, our results raise the possibility that CA1 might play a particularly important role among hippocampal subregions in evaluating experienced events. © 2017 Lee, Huh, Lee, Ghim, Lee and Jung. © 2017 Lee, Huh, Lee, Ghim, Lee and Jung.
