Jacob Barosin Collection. 1892-1999 Bulk: 1926-1973
This collection documents the life of artist Jacob Barosin (1906-2001). The range of materials includes official documents, personal papers, manuscripts, correspondence, ephemera, and hundreds of photographs. The majority dates from 1926 to 1973. There is little material from the last two decades of Barosin’s life.Barosin’s personal life is reflected in his papers and official documents such as passports and residence permits from Germany, France, and the United States. It is also documented in extensive correspondence between Jacob and his wife Sonia Barosin, their correspondence with family and friends, and correspondence of a general nature. The collection includes letters from the Gurs concentration camp. Hundreds of annotated photographs document the daily lives of Jacob and Sonia Barosin in Germany, France, and the United States.Evidence of Barosin’s professional life as a writer and an artist includes the typescript and manuscript of his 1930 doctoral dissertation about Sienese painter Domenico Beccafumi, as well as the typescript of his Holocaust memoir “A Remnant” (1988). His work as an artist is documented by drawings, exhibit catalogs, and business correspondence.Original artworks, lithographs, etchings, “political cartoons”; a box with “tools for engraving”; copper plates with LBI Arts and ObjectsJacob Judey-Barosin was born in Latvia (then Russian Empire) and grew up in Berlin. He attended the Berlin “Kunst Akademie” under Prof. Eric Wolfsfeld; studied art history at the University of Berlin and earned a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Freiburg. - In 1933, he and his wife Sonia emigrated to Paris. Early in 1943 they were arrested and sent to the deportation camp in Gurs. They were freed by French authorities and went into hiding until their liberation in 1944 in Paris. In 1947 they emigrated to the United States. - Barosin worked as an illustrator for NBC-TV for 15 years. He illustrated the Jewish family bible; painted 18 life-size prophets and had many one-man shows exhibiting his biblical and other works in Israel. His original sketchbook of Gurs is permanently with Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. He wrote a book, “A remnant”, describing his life in France during the Holocaust years; it was published in 1988 by the Holocaust Library. - Barosin’s wife Sonia died in 1973. In December 1976, Barosin married his second wife, Natalie (born Stein), who died in 2006.Jacob’s father, Hermann Judey (Riga 1878? – New York 1959), was a wood merchant in Berlin. His wife, Olga (Jacob’s mother) died in Berlin, when she was only in her 50s. He then remarried.Jacob had three sisters: Lydia; Mary (Miriam); and Sina Ida: Lydia (Riga 1903 – New York 1976) was married to Dr. Anatol Kaminsky, a Russian born doctor who completed his medical education in France. They fled the Nazis to France and Morocco, and reached the USA in 1942. - Mary was born in Riga in 1908; she was married to the Chemist Ernst Mangold. They escaped the Nazis, going to France, where they were in hiding. They emigrated to the US in 1948. - The youngest sibling, Sina Ida died under the Nazis in Berlin.Jacob Barosin's original sketchbook of Gurs is permanently with Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. His memoir “A Remnant,” describing his life in France during the Holocaust, was published in 1988.The LBI A/V collection contains DVDs of interviews with Barosin.Processeddigitize

Geophysical methods for monitoring soil stabilization by microbial induced carbonate precipitation
Urbanization growth rate is increasing exponentially and with that comes challenging issues in urban development and environment sustainability. Generally, any development processes disturb the environment, and soil stabilization as one of the first steps in infrastructure building is no exception. However, in the past few decades, methods have been sought to reduce the possible harmful impact of soil stabilization processes on the environment. One promising method is microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP); in which, ubiquitous soil microorganisms stabilize the loose soil in natural and minimally harmful ways. Although MICP is continuously being studied in multi-disciplinary research, there are still ambiguities in understanding its subsurface processes. This is commonly due to lack of proper monitoring tools capable of providing coherent micro and macro scale information about MICP in subsurface. Geophysical methods are handy tools capable of providing images of the subsurface with high spatiotemporal resolution; while, being cost efficient, non-disruptive and viable for long-term monitoring applications. This thesis is investigating the efficiency of induced polarization (IP) in monitoring MICP processes and comparing it to direct monitoring methods as well as other geophysical methods. IP is known as a sensitive method to interfacial changes within fluid-grain boundaries in porous media; hence, it is a great measure to study MICP where most changes happen in this boundary (e.g., precipitation of calcite). In this three-phase study, firstly, it is shown that spectral IP (SIP) is capable of tracking changes due to calcite precipitation (the main byproduct of MICP) in the porous media, induced by chemical reactions in a laboratory scale experiment. Compared to resistivity and shear-wave velocity, SIP provided additional information with calcite precipitation pattern. Secondly, in a field scale study, time-domain IP is compared to direct monitoring approaches (e.g., chemical analysis) and showed spatial and temporal extents of MICP in the subsurface; while, direct methods failed to provide such information. And finally, in a more in depth study, it is shown that SIP can reveal frequency dependency of MICP in both laboratory and field scale settings. The additional information provided by IP compared to other methods indicate that IP is the prime candidate for monitoring MICP processes.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference
