Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
An Exploratory Study of Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring (IONM) Using COBIT 5 for Improving Neurophysiological Tools and Information Use
Neurophysiological tools enable information systems (IS) researchers to measure subject responses when engaging in varying activities involving the central nervous system (CNS), the peripheral nervous system (PNS), or the hormone system (Riedl and Léger, 2016). Prior literature has called for rigor in the neuro-information-systems (NeuroIS) research methodology by addressing six critical factors, “reliability, validity, sensitivity, diagnosticity, objectivity, and intrusiveness of a measurement instrument” (Riedl, Davis and Hevner, 2014). Additional literature has reported strengths and weaknesses related to some critical factors, such as reliability and validity, when using neurophysiological tools, and the data and information that they provide (Dimoka, et al., 2012). This exploratory study uses the COBIT 5 (ISACA, 2012; ISACA 2019) framework to identify risks involving intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM), a critical function that examines patient responses when engaging in varying activities (Rabai, Sessions and Seubert, 2016; Tamkus, Rice and McCaffrey, 2018) involving the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). A questionnaire has been developed to facilitate the collection and examination of this study’s research data from a small sample of U.S. hospitals and other healthcare service providers. Interviews are planned as a follow-up to further examine those risks that address any of the previously stated six critical factors affecting the NeuroIS research methodology (reliability, validity, sensitivity, diagnosticity, objectivity, and intrusiveness) and that involve IONM tools and their derived information use. This study intends to provide a valued contribution to healthcare service providers in strengthening their reliability of interpretable IONM data and information. Also, as a contribution to the existing NeuroIS book of knowledge, this study looks to offer an extended risk management framework to NeuroIS researchers in their approach to future studies involving neurophysiological tools and their information use
AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF ORGANIZATIONAL SECURITY RISK MANAGEMENT FOR IMPROVED EFFECTIVENESS
Information technology executives continue to have concerns about information security (Kappelman, McLean, Johnson, & Torres, 2016) and the increasing rate of information security threats facing organizations (Ponemon Institute, 2017). This exploratory study aimed to take a closer look at the organizational security risk management process for improved effectiveness, and its integral role among other organizational processes. Two research questions were addressed by identifying organizational drivers to security risk management effectiveness, and by determining challenges to achieving organizational security risk management effectiveness. Using the resource-based view theory (RBV), and Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model Integration (SEI-CMMI) Risk Management (RSKM) model, a three-phased approach was taken to conduct the study. Phase 1 of the study involved planning the research activities, defining the samples to be used, and designing and developing the research tools needed for the study’s execution. During Phase 1, the categories and codes needed for the directed content analysis were created. Also, the recruitment and procurement of a sample of three subject matter experts in information security risk management practices serving in the role of a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) or an equivalent executive position were identified to validate the security risk management content derived from the initial directed content analysis performed. Phase 2 consisted of the implementation of the study’s categories and codes to be used in the directed content analysis. The directed content analysis was performed against 1,113 financial reporting artifacts covering the period of January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2016 for a sample of U.S. banks. In the last phase, Phase 3, the Q-sort technique was used to validate the initial directed content analysis results, which were captured as security risk management financial reported statements. The CISOs applied their experience and understanding of the CMMI-SVC RSKM model’s different capability levels and maturity levels to classify and validate each of the security risk management’s financial reported statements. Critical discourse analysis was applied to the feedback data collected from the CISOs during the Q-sort application. The results of both the directed content analysis and critical discourse analysis were reported, and any known limitations were stated. With researchers and practitioners in mind, this study used two previously unpaired frameworks of the RBV theory and the CMMI-SVC RSKM model to examine organizational security risk management. Additionally, this qualitative study used two previously unpaired analysis approaches of a directed content analysis on organizational financial reporting artifacts and critical discourse analysis of validation feedback. Because of the highly complex, sensitive nature surrounding organizational security risk management, the overall study’s approach provided an alternative way to assess its maturity and its effectiveness, and to identify improvement opportunities
A Qualitative Multi-Method Study of U.S. Banks’ Financial Reporting Addressing Security Risk Management (SRM) Operational Effectiveness and SRM Maturity
Security risk management (SRM) presents continued challenges for IT executives. Because of growing data breaches, significant funding needs, and non-stop malicious cyber threats, SRM operational effectiveness and SRM maturity present ever-changing complexities. In organizations, cyber-related events, including advancing information technologies, contribute to the increasing complexity and guarded nature of SRM. This qualitative study was designed to examine SRM operational effectiveness and SRM maturity in financial reporting. Using a set of qualitative techniques, a sample of 107 SRM financial reported statements were rendered from 1,113 U.S. banks’ financial reporting artifacts. Validation of results involved interviews and Q-sorting among three Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) as subject matter experts. This study presented evidence of varying perceptions of SRM operational effectiveness and SRM maturity were conveyed that may or may not properly reflect how well organizations may perform against cyber-related events. To researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, this study offers an alternative approach and theoretical considerations for future SRM research, especially when reporting cyber-related events
