RESENHA DO LIVRO "SPORT, CULTURE AND ADVERTISING: IDENTITIES, COMMODITIES AND THE POLITICS OF REPRESENTATION" DE STEVEN J. JACKSON E DAVID L. ANDREWS
The collection of Steven J. And David L. Jackson Andrews' Sport, Culture and Advertising: Identities, commodities and the politics of representation " includes a series of articles investigating sports-related advertisements. Acknowledging advertising as a vehicle for production and reproduction of imaginary national sports, the authors highlight the political representation of ethnic, gender, social class, disability and identity in different contexts of research guided by its relations with sport consuming. The texts make contributions on current issues and indicate that the use of sports advertising also reinforces the social domination.El libro de Steven J. Jackson y David L. Entendiendo la publicidad como un vehículo de producción y reproducción de imaginarios deportivos nacionales, los autores destacan las políticas de representación étnica, de género, clase social, deficiencia e identidad en distintos contextos de investigación pautados en sus relaciones con el consumo deportivo. Steven Mailloux's 2021 Essay "Political Theologies of Sacred Rhetoric," and Walter J. Ong's Thought
See the above abstract. In my 4,000-word review essay "Steven Mailloux's 2021 Essay 'Political Theologies of Sacred Rhetoric,' and Walter J. Ong's Thought," I highlight certain points in Mailloux's perceptive essay in the new 290-page 2021 anthology Responding to the Sacred: An Inquiry into the Limits of Rhetoric, edited by Michael Bernard-Donals and Kyle Jensen (Penn State University Press, pages 77-98). For example, Mailloux discusses Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope, and the Spanish Renaissance mystic St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556), the founder of the Jesuit order, and the author of the short book of instructions known as the Spiritual Exercises. In connection with highlights from Mailloux's fine essay, I discuss the thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and rhetorician Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955).N/AFarrell, Thomas. (2021). Steven Mailloux's 2021 Essay "Political Theologies of Sacred Rhetoric," and Walter J. Ong's Thought. Suitability of salt domes in the East Texas Basin for nuclear waste isolation: final summary of geologic and hydrogeologic research (1978 to 1983)
Bureau Publication GC8401 - to purchase a print copy please go to: https://store.beg.utexas.edu/geologic-circulars/478-gc8401.htmlThis report summarizes results of the East Texas Waste Isolation (ETWI) program from January 1, 1978, to March 30, 1983. Having an extensive data base, the study comprised 33 different lines of research by 67 scientists and research assistants. The program included both basinwide and site-specific (mainly around Oakwood Dome) studies that used surface and subsurface data.
Mesozoic opening of the Gulf of Mexico accompanied thermal processes that controlled sedimentation during filling of the East Texas Basin. The basin contains as much as 7,000 m (23,000 ft) of shallow-marine and continental sediments overlying the Louann Salt. Deformation in the basin resulted from subsidence of its floor and gravitational flow of salt and from salt loss in the subsurface and at the surface. Regional studies have defined the present-day distribution of salt structures and the growth history of domes. The East Texas Basin is divided into four provinces on the basis of the shape of salt structures. Five forces that make salt flow operated from near surface to the deepest parts of the basin to form these structures. Salt flow began in pre-Gilmer (Late Jurassic) time with the growth of salt pillows. Three groups of diapirs can be differentiated on the basis of age and distribution. The growing salt structures affected topography, thereby influencing depositional facies and resulting in deposition of low-permeability facies around the salt stocks.
Rates of dome growth declined exponentially with time to rates of less than 0.6 m/104 yr. Geomorphic evidence does not preclude Quaternary uplift over Oakwood Dome, but its southern flank may have subsided. All regional fault systems in the basin appear to be related to slow gravitational creep of salt downward toward the basin center or upward into salt pillows and diapirs. Nevertheless, at least eight probable earthquakes were recorded near the southern margin of the basin in 1981 and 1982, and their probable focus, the Mount Enterprise fault, is poorly understood.
The following conclusions were drawn from geologic study of a core drilled from Oakwood Dome: Salt core from the dome is more than 98 percent pure halite (anhydrite is the only other mineral present). The rock salt displays evidence of two distinct periods of recrystallization. Geometric analysis and strain analysis suggest that the crest of the dome was truncated, probably by ground-water dissolution, during the formation of anhydrite cap rock. Diapiric rise of salt formed a tight contact between salt and cap rock. The cap rock formed in a deep saline environment and appears to be a low-permeability barrier to dome dissolution.Bureau of Economic GeologyUT Librarie
Globalisation, Corporate Nationalism and Japanese Identity: Advertising Production and Signifying Practices of Nike and Asics
Drawing upon a theoretical framework that incorporates corporate nationalism, glocalisation and Orientalism, this thesis examines globalisation in relation to the production of Japanese culture and identity. Specifically, it investigates the economic and symbolic power of transnational corporations in signifying, and consequently re-articulating, national culture and identity through their advertising activities within the global context. Methodologically, the study uses a multi-perspectival and multi-method approach as informed by the ‘circuit of culture’ (du Gay, Hall, Janes, Mackay, & Negus, 1997; Jackson, 2008; Johnson, 1986/1987) to examine case studies of Nike and Asics corporations with a focus on their production and representation of advertising. More specifically, the case studies provide analyses of the contexts of production, advertising texts, and interviews with key ‘cultural intermediaries’ (Bourdieu, 1984; du Gay et al., 1997) to explore the nature, processes and contradictions of corporate nationalism.
The key findings include: (a) the reciprocity, interdependence and interpenetration of the global/West and the local/East within the contexts of advertising production; (b) the negotiations, accommodations and multiple regimes of mediation involved with both Japanese and Western cultural intermediaries within their practices of production and representation; (c) the usefulness of glocalisation and self-Orientalism to examine non-Western forms of culture, identity and subjectivity as reproduced through corporate nationalism; and, (d) the need for more research on the dialectic relationships between the global and the local, the West and the East, and the economy and culture as framed by the circuit of culture. Overall, this study identifies a gap between the economic-centred discourse of globalisation and actual signifying practices of advertising production by focusing on how Japanese culture and identity are re-imagined, represented and reconstructed by two global sport brands at the global-local and West-East nexus
