    No full text
This article presents an historiographical evaluation of the most important studies concerning "la violencia" in Colombia during the past 15 years. The author analyzes the scholarship on the violence, first, through general studies of Colombia socio-economic conditions and political parties during the 1940s. Nest, LeGrand discusses the most important regional studies which analyze the relationship between local, regional and national power. Shee debates the various theses of the violence and classifies these studies according to the pre-existing perspectives concerning the phenomenon of the violence. Additionally, the article introduces new questions and topics which the author deems important for future research. The article concludes with an "appendix" written by Herbert Braun resulting in a lively debate between the author of The asassination of Gaitán (Mataron a Gaitán) and LeGrand.

The following paper investigates the concept of motion in Jacques Legrand, a hitherto little-studied author of the early fifteenth century. Legrand, an important member of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine, wrote a philosophical Compendium for the students of his Order. This contribution first attempts to provide a contextualization of Legrand’s treatment of motion within this work. Legrand’s contribution to philosophical encyclopedism is here discussed. Secondly, it reviews the most important theories on the nature of movement in the Middle Ages. Thirdly, it offers a detailed analysis of Legrand’s arguments in support of the nominalist view that it is unnecessary (if not wrong) to consider the local motion as a fluxus added to the moveable body. The article suggests that Legrand’s generalized nominalist position may be connected with certain lines to be followed within his own Order or even with the anti-realist ideology of the conciliarists philosopher, like Pierre D’Ailly and Jean Gerson.

Investigations in an external-loop airlift photobioreactor with annular light chambers and swirling flow

Photosynthetic microorganisms could serve as valuable compounds, but also for environmental applications. Their production under controlled conditions implies to design specific reactors, named photobioreactors, in which light supply is the main constraint. This paper was devoted to an original external-loop airlift photobioreactor (PBR) with annular light chambers in which a swirling motion was induced. The aim was to characterize this novel geometrical configuration in terms of gas–liquid hydrodynamics, and to test its potentiality for algal cultures. This PBR consisted of two identical columns connected by flanges defining tangential inlets, each column being made of two transparent concentric tubes (6 L in liquid volume, 50 m−1 in specific illuminated area). Firstly, the global flow characteristics (circulation and mixing times) were determined by a tracer method and modelled by an axial dispersed plug flow with complete recirculation (Péclet number). By means of a double optical probe, both local and global time-averaged parameters of the gas phase were measured, namely void fraction, bubble velocity, frequency and size. The gas–liquid mass transfer were also characterized, in tap water and in culture medium, by measuring overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients. In a second time, cultures of the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii were run in batch mode. The variations of biomass concentration and pigment content with time from inoculation were successfully obtained. All these findings highlighted: (i) some significant differences in terms of gas–liquid hydrodynamics between the present PBR and the usual airlift systems, (ii) the interest of this configuration for algal cultures, even if complementary studies and technological improvements are still required for definitively validating its scale-up

Description of the female of Heteroclita digennaroi (Legrand, 2004) and comments on the species. A series of specimens of Heteroclita digennaroi (Legrand, 2004), a species so far known only from the male holotype, has been collected at Mount Entoto in September, 2006, by the author and Karl Werner during a trip to Ethiopia. The female is here described, illustrated, and comments are added about the male morphology and the biology of the species. A correction is made regarding the data of the holotype. A female is designated as an alloreferent.</jats:p
