Taxonomic differences between Pinus sylvestris and P. uncinata revealed in the stomata and cuticle characters for use in the study of fossil material

    No full text
Taxonomic differences in the needle epidermis characteristics of Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus uncinata Ramond ex DC. from two Iberian populations were sought; such information could help identify these species when pollen analysis and the inspection of wood anatomy fails. The features of the cuticle are commonly well preserved in the fossil record. Although the epidermal patterns of the examined taxa were similar, qualitative differences were seen in the subsidiary and guard cells. P. sylvestris showed small subsidiary cells homogenously arranged around the opening of the epistomatal chamber, while P. uncinata showed small, lateral subsidiary cells and non-differentiated subsidiary cells in the polar position. The aperture of the epistomatic chamber of P. uncinata was also larger in diameter (15.1 ± 1.8 µm P. sylvestris; 21.1 ± 2.8 µm P. uncinata). Principal components analysis and discriminant analysis was performed on the features of the guard cells characterising the size and shape of the cuticular thickenings — all the variables analysed can be measured in disperse stomata in microscope preparations for pollen analysis. Significant differences were found in the upper woody lamellae width and the coefficient associated with the shape of the medial lamellae borders (discriminant analysis weighting 0.739 and 0.826 respectively). Other significant parameters included the coefficient associated with the relative size of the medial lamellae border width of the guard cells with respect to the distance between the external limits of the medial lamellae borders, and the length of the upper woody lamella. Different light regimens appeared not to significantly affect the variability of the studied features

Pseudotranslation in O Vilarejo by Raphael Montes

    No full text
This paper analyzes the use of pseudotranslation in Raphael Montes' O Vilarejo, highlighting how this literary device enhances layers of mystery and prompts questioning of authorship and authenticity in the narrative. Pseudotranslation, a technique that presents an original work as if it were a translation of a foreign text, is utilized by Montes as he positions himself as the “translator” of stories by a supposed author named Elfrida Pimminstoffer. Inspired by If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino, Montes incorporates fictional elements, such as the Cimmerian language and the character Uzzi-Tuzzi, to create an enigmatic atmosphere and reinforce the work’s sense of authenticity. An analysis of the short story “Leviathan: the Sisters Vália, Velma, and Vonda” reveals the character Vonda as the true author of the fictional manuscripts, bringing to light themes of rivalry and morality. In conclusion, this study asserts that the pseudotranslation in O Vilarejo not only challenges traditional notions of authorship and translation but also enriches the reader's experience, encouraging reflection on the boundaries between the real and the fictional.

This article compares the baptismal records of slave children in the parish records of Montes Claros (in northem Minas Gerais) during three different periods: 1815-19, 1840-44 and 1872-76. The author first reviews evidence dealing with slave godparents in other Brazilian regions. As for Montes Claros, most godparents were free citizens although the percentage of slave godparents increased over time. Other trends included an increasing number of slaves whose slave godparents came from neighboring estates and a diminshing participation of landowners or their relatives as godparents. This article compares the baptismal records of slave children in the parish records of Montes Claros (in northem Minas Gerais) during three different periods: 1815-19, 1840-44 and 1872-76. &nbsp

The productivity effects of decentralized reforms - an analysis of the Chinese industrial reforms

    No full text
The empirical literature on the effects of ownership has not distinguished between the effects of ownership and the effects of control. It has also generally ignored the dynamic effects of various ownership and control rights. Using a rich set of panel data about changes in China's state-owned enterprises, the author examines the static and dynamic effects of decentralizing ownership and control rights. He finds that productivity and growth rates improved significantly when reform improved the incentives for managers and employees to learn and to work hard - for example by decentralizing the rights to control wages, make production decisions, and appoint new managers. Increasing profit-retention rates and adopting performance contracts - conventionally viewed as the most important reforms for China's state enterprises - did not improve productivity much. Overall, decentralization accounted for a least 42 percent of productivity growth in Chinese state enterprises in the 1980s. Much of that gain came from improvements in the growth rate of productivity rather than in improved levels of productivity.Labor Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Public Health Promotion,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Municipal Financial Management
