An Analysis of the Implications of the Stupak/Pitts Amendment for Coverage of Medically Indicated Abortions

    No full text
This analysis examines the implications for coverage of medically indicated abortions under the Stupak/Pitts Amendment (Stupak/Pitts) to H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act. In this analysis we focus on the Amendment\u27s implications for the health benefit services industry as a whole. We also consider the Amendment\u27s implications for the growth of a market for public or private supplemental coverage of medically indicated abortions. Finally, we examine the issues that may arise as insurers attempt to implement coverage determinations in which abortion may be a consequence of a condition, rather than the primary basis of treatment

Stupak   HSEI «Ukrainian medical Stomatological Academy», Poltava Summary Aim: Determine the development of dysbiosis in the tissues of the oral cavity of rats with diabetes mellitus of the 1st, 2nd type, with a sugar load and under the influence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Materials and Methods: Diabetes type 1 was induced by alloxan (119 mg / kg, single dose), diabetes type 2 - using protamine sulphate (18 mg / kg / peritoneum within 10 days). Sugar load was conducted by the consumption of drinking water with sucrose (5%). Systemic endotoxemia was reproduced with LPS (6.6 mg / kg / intramuscularly, within 5 days). In the tissues of the oral cavity (cheek, tongue, gums) was determined urease and  lysozyme activity, dysbiosis rate was calculated by the ratio of urease and lysozyme relative activities. Results: In diabetes of 1st and 2nd type under sugar load and after LPS administration in buccal mucosa and tongue is increased urease activity and reduced lysozyme activity, which leads to a significant increase in the degree of dysbiosis (in 7-27 times). Conclusion: Leading pathogenetic link of diabetes - dysbiosis may occur under the influence of hyperglycemia, and as a result of systemic endotoxemia. This circumstance dictates the need for anti dysbiotic prophylaxis and therapy of diabetogenic complications in the oral cavity tissues. Keywords: diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, lipopolysaccharide, dysbiosis, oral cavity

ELF-EMFs Induced Effects on Cell Lines: Controlling ELF Generation in Laboratory

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to discuss the effects of the exposure to Extremely Low Frequency ElectroMagnetic Fields (ELF- EMFs) on non- and excitable cells using in vitro cell models, namely neuron-like cell line (PC12), glioblastoma-derived GL15 cells as glial model and C2C12 myocytes as muscle model, focusing our attention on standardized protocols for ELF-EMFs generation and exposure. A major issue in laboratory and likely in nature studies about possible biological effects of ELF waves is the difficulty in providing standard, reproducible environmental conditions. Hence, as part of the work we have developed an exposure system including a probing scanner, able to sample a given volume and to measure the time- varying magnetic field vector. The system allows detection, monitoring and removal of electromagnetic noise sources, as well as means to assess field homogeneity in terms of intensity and polarizatio

WHEN THE REAL IS NOT ENOUGH: HOW FANTASY COMICS ENGAGE WITH THE RUSSO-UKRAINIAN WAR:Concrete Dream Slang: Transforming Narratives through Cut-Up, Intuition and Fictioning

As a detour from the real into the unreal, fantasy, in a rather paradoxical way, eventually succeeds in reducing the distance in mediating complex histories and collective psychic sites, especially in those moments, when the referential discourse fails to adequately frame a happening that is intrinsically ‘unnatural.’ The premise of this panel is to examine the ways, in which fantasy/sci-fi comics engage in a contemporary project of narrating Ukrainian postcolonial realities in the face of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Generic nature of fantasy, coupled with the medium specific properties of comics, opens up the gaps in referential discourse, in which netherlands as “emotional image[s] of the explorable spaces ” arise. Thus, Alexander Pollard’s graphic narrative in progress centers oral historical testimonies from Ukrainian women affected by the war by employing abstracted, ‘cut and paste’ style illustrations, framed in a fictionalized space through the references to the science-fiction works of Philip K Dick. In her paper, Svitlana Stupak reads the rise of horror-based fantasy titles on Ukrainian comics scene as an emotive response to the colonial ‘amnesia’ of national history, which blurs the line between the past colonial trauma and the realities of the continuing war. A J Pollard:-My practice-based PhD consists of a series of comics/zines that, in part, cover aspects of the Russo-Ukrainian war. In creating these works, I utilise intuitive cut-up techniques and fictioning to generate narratives that ‘write and illustrate themselves’, similar to what ‘weird studies’ scholar Erik Davis calls a ‘self-producing vortex’ when discussing the late work of science-fiction author Philip K Dick.-My paper will focus on one of the comic outputs I have produced as part of this practice-based PhD. This comic is titled Concrete Dream Slang.-Concrete Dream Slang ‘fictions into’ real oral historical testimonies taken from a series of conversations held with Ukrainian women affected by the Russia/Ukraine war. I plan to deliver a short reading, and discuss my methodology, the low-fi, abstracted and hauntological drawings and the overall weird atmosphere of the work. Key questions raised in the work: 1. How does the production of alternative comics facilitate an exploration of the interplay between reality and fiction?2. In what ways do personal histories and oral testimonies intersect with principles of fictioning, intuition, and the cut-up process in the creation of alternative comics?3. How do alternative comics contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the domain of intuitive creative methodologies?4. What are the various approaches employed to examine and critique the Russo/Ukrainian War within alternative comics, particularly in challenging narratives of machismo?<br/

Man, Poetry and Nature in the Work of A.Yu. Krymsky: Actuality of Postmodern Communications / M. Maksiuta, O. Shtepenko, O. Patlaichuk, I. Skliar, O. Stupak // Postmodern Openings. – 2022. – Vol. 13, iss. 1(Sup1). – P. 229–246.The article analyzes the features of poetic reflection in the work of A. Krymsky in the relation "man-nature". Coverage of this problem in the conditions of postmodern philosophical discourse requires appropriate embeddedness in the national and cultural experience. Moreover, the poetry of A. Krymsky manifests the deep experiences of the Ukrainian man's ties with the natural world, which includes the actualization of the inner nature of man. The author seeks to "write out" the laws of the "moral constitution" according to which a person is worthy of his purpose of being in nature "has the right" to love according to the vocation of his convictions, his needs and inclinations. On the one hand, the author seems to call us to abide by these "laws", but, on the other hand, his thoughts divert from such categoricalness into the space of "identity" and confessional repentance. As follows from the above, the dignity of a person consists in the awakening and strengthening of an independent, responsible, formed on the path of enriching the inner life of a spiritual personality and the search for a free egress. And in this, in fact, the highest value of the relevance of postmodern self-communication in the interpretation of the poetic work of A. Krymsky is developed
