Writing about a Stranger. Therese Schlesinger (1863 Vienna – 1940 Blois): Vom Gemeintsein im Bild der Vergangenheit

    No full text
This article addresses theories and methods of writing biography with regard to Walter Benjamin’s metaphor of »recognizing the image of the past as one’s own concern«. The author reflects on »recognizing« herself in the historical image and in the work of Therese Schlesinger. Tracing the biography of the Jewish-Austrian feminist, social democrat and member of parliament, who was forced into exile by the National Socialist takeover in 1938, the author refuses to limit the reading of Schlesinger’s biography to a single historicist narrative. Gabriella Hauch argues that we must look for narrative fissures and gaps to make visible the multi-dimensional tangle of cause and effect in biographical research. This article addresses theories and methods of writing biography with regard to Walter Benjamin’s metaphor of »recognizing the image of the past as one’s own concern«. Ein "Ausnahme-Ausländer" und die zweite Generation in Alev Tekinays Roman "Nur der Hauch von Paradies"

‘Generation’ is a keyword in Alev Tekinay’s Nur der Hauch vom Paradies (1993). In this novel the author creates a permanent conflict between two generations of Turkish immigrants in Germany. They are represented by the main character, a young successful writer, and by his parents, who were guest-workers. Based on Karl Mannheim’s classical concept of generation, this article analyses images of Turkish migrant generations and their positioning among the German society in the nineties, with their dominant discourses on national homogenity. It also examines whether the novel depicts intergenerational discontinuities, rather than continuities and asks which role the feeling to be a group sharing the same life experience plays in establishing the identity of Turkish migrant children.

A Meta-Analysis of Field Studies on Criteria-Based Content Analysis

    No full text
Criteria-based Content Analysis (CBCA) is employed in forensic contexts to assess the credibility of child sexual abuse (CSA) allegations. The presence of CBCA criteria in an account suggests the narrator personally experienced the described event. Because of differences between field and artificial laboratory settings we conducted a meta-analysis focusing specifically on field studies and quasi-experiments carried out in the field. We formally assessed strict ground-truth criteria (and other methodological aspects) to select only methodologically sound studies. Effect sizes for individual criteria were much larger than effect sizes for most deception cues in previous meta-analyses. We propose an unweighted mean summary score as an alternative to traditional summary scores. Effect sizes were similar for CSA allegations and other kinds of autobiographical events but varied depending on ground-truth base rates.Full Tex

Effect of Protein Hydrolysates on Pancreatic Cancer Cells

Effect of Fish Protein Hydrolysates on Pancreatic Cancer Cells Carlo G. Ossum1, Lisa Lystbæk Andersen2, Henrik Hauch Nielsen2, Else K. Hoffmann1, and Flemming Jessen2 1University of Copenhagen, Department of Biology, Denmark, 2Technical University of Denmark (DTU), National Food Institute, Denmark Corresponding author: Carlo G. Ossum ([email protected]) A large number of bioactive peptides have been identified in and isolated from various food sources. Milk seems to be a particularly rich source but also different fish species have been found to yield bioactive peptides. Bioactive peptides, usually consisting of 3 to 20 amino acids, can be released from proteins upon degradation by proteolytic enzymes, e.g. in the intestinal tract. The numerous described bioactivities include antihypertensive, anticancerous, antimicrobial, and immunomodulating effects. Here, we investigate the effect of fish protein hydrolysates obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis on cancer cell proliferation. Skin and belly flap muscle from trout were hydrolysed with the unspecific proteases Alcalase, Neutrase, or UE1 (all from Novozymes, Bagsværd, Denmark) to a hydrolysis degree of 1-15%. The hydrolysates were tested for biological activities affecting cell proliferation and ability to modulate caspase activity in pancreatic cancer cells COLO357 and BxPC-3 in vitro. A number of the hydrolysates showed caspase promoting activity; in particular products containing muscle tissue, i.e. belly flap, were able to stimulate caspase activity. Selected hydrolysis products were further fractionated by ultrafiltration into molecular sizes above and below 5 kDa and their activity and dose-dependence was tested

High Temperature Water Electrolysis Using Metal Supported Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cells (SOEC)

    No full text
Metal supported cells as developed according to the DLR SOFC concept by applying plasma deposition technologies were investigated for use as solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOEC) for high temperature steam electrolysis. Cells consisting of a porous ferritic steel support, a diffusion barrier layer, a Ni/YSZ hydrogen electrode, a YSZ electrolyte and a LSCF oxygen electrode were electrochemically characterised by means of i-V characteristics and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements including a long-term test over 2000 hours. The cell voltage during electrolysis operation at a current density of -1.0 A cm-2 was 1.28 V at an operating temperature of 850 °C and 1.4 V at 800 °C. A long-term test run over 2000 hours with a steam content of 43% at 800 °C and a current density of -0.3 A cm-2 showed a degradation rate of 3.2% per 1000 hours. The impedance spectra revealed a significantly enhanced polarisation resistance during electrolysis operation compared to fuel cell operation which was mainly attributed to the hydrogen electrode

Gender and Politics in the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) 1986-2000

The author bases her gender specific analysis of ehe party politics of the Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ) and of the staging of the party\u27s public appearances since the beginning of Jörg Haiders chairmanship in 1986 on two assumptions. She defines the FPÖ as a (national- or right-wing-) populist party and she focuses on situations of crisis as a common denominator in the development of populism and gender relations. Populist politics, just like gender relations, result and produce crises on different social levels, which are characteristic for the situation of Austrian society at the turn of the 21st century. The FPÖ is by tradition a male party, which has become apparent in the recruitment strategies for its leading elites in male Student corporations and the populist content of its politics, which concentrated on male-orientated topics such as hate of foreigners and public security. At the national elections this resulted in a voter-gender gap of 11 %. This means, that it were Austrian women, who in recent years prevented the FPÖ to become the largest party in Austria. The FPÖ tried to react with a variety of strategies: on the personal level women acquired in leading positions, and on the political level the FPÖ made the crucial specifically female contradiction, namely to integrate jobs and familywork, one of the focal points of their campaigns. By doing so they tried, even by recurring to countless contradictory arguments and demands, to maximize their female votes at all cost, which is one of the major characteristics of populism. The author bases her gender specific analysis of ehe party politics of the Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ) and of the staging of the party\u27s public appearances since the beginning of Jörg Haiders chairmanship in 1986 on two assumptions.
