A pre-post test evaluation of the impact of the PELICAN MDT-TME Development Programme on the working lives of colorectal cancer team members
No full textBackground: the PELICAN Multidisciplinary Team Total Mesorectal Excision (MDT-TME) Development Programme aimed to improve clinical outcomes for rectal cancer by educating colorectal cancer teams in precision surgery and related aspects of multidisciplinary care. The Programme reached almost all colorectal cancer teams across England. We took the opportunity to assess the impact of participating in this novel team-based Development Programme on the working lives of colorectal cancer team members.Methods: the impact of participating in the programme on team members' self-reported job stress, job satisfaction and team performance was assessed in a pre-post course study. 333/568 (59%) team members, from the 75 multidisciplinary teams who attended the final year of the Programme, completed questionnaires pre-course, and 6-8 weeks post-course.Results: across all team members, the main sources of job satisfaction related to working in multidisciplinary teams; whilst feeling overloaded was the main source of job stress. Surgeons and clinical nurse specialists reported higher levels of job satisfaction than team members who do not provide direct patient care, whilst MDT coordinators reported the lowest levels of job satisfaction and job stress. Both job stress and satisfaction decreased after participating in the Programme for all team members. There was a small improvement in team performance.Conclusions: participation in the Development Programme had a mixed impact on the working lives of team members in the immediate aftermath of attending. The decrease in team members' job stress may reflect the improved knowledge and skills conferred by the Programme. The decrease in job satisfaction may be the consequence of being unable to apply these skills immediately in clinical practice because of a lack of required infrastructure and/or equipment. In addition, whilst the Programme raised awareness of the challenges of teamworking, a greater focus on tackling these issues may have improved working lives furthe

Programa de Pós-Graduação em ArquiteturaNa atualidade a totalidade de projetos habitacionais parte do principio absurdo do mínimo espaço para reduzir os custos da obra em lugar do utilizar um conceito do espaço necessário. Quase nenhum destes projetos leva em consideração o tamanho do mobiliário disponível no mercado. Isto cria uma incompatibilidade entre a necessidade espacial do usuário e a área disponível nas habitações de interesse social. Os resultados de uma construção com estas falhas entre outros são: O aumento dos custos para o morador que deve ampliar sua casa para poder utilizar o espaço com algo de conforto. A perda de flexibilidade de uso já que o espaço não permite variações no arranjo espacial. As habitações que não têm o equipamento necessário para sua utilização devido à falta de espaço para colocar o mobiliário. O congestionamento visual devido à aglomeração de móveis dentro de um cômodo criando desorganização e desconforto. A perda da privacidade pela carência de um espaço próprio. Os dormitórios sem utilidade durante o dia, que ficam lotados a noite. Como uma possível solução se propôs o conceito de um painel mobiliário o qual deveria contribuir com a facilidade de construção, montagem e pré-fabricação de um imóvel como alternativas para diminuir custos. Ao mesmo tempo este painel conteria o mobiliário necessário para a utilização dos diferentes cômodos e assim aproveitar ao máximo o incipiente espaço em projetos de habitação de interesse social. A fundamentação teórica deste painel foi realizada por meio de pesquisas sobre propostas de habitação social e projetos arquitetônicos que atendessem a princípios de produtos industrializados, assim como o levantamento dos problemas mencionados anteriormente. A realização prática se desenvolveu por meio de uma tabela que funciona como checklist e avaliam o conforto e habitabilidade destes projetos por meio da aplicação dos conceitos de flexibilidade, adaptabilidade e privacidade. Foi realizado também um levantamento de produtos existentes no mercado internacional que apresentam soluções inovadoras para espaços reduzidos tanto pela variedade de funções que o mesmo permite quanto pelas propostas de aproveitamento de espaço no transcurso do dia. Para testar tanto a tabela quanto a aplicabilidade do mobiliário pesquisado se utilizou como estudo de caso o protótipo desenvolvido pela ARQ-UFSC em colaboração com a empresa Battistella

Biodiversity and biogeography of hydrothermal vent species: thirty years of discovery and investigations

fauna that inhabit them represents one of the most extraordinary
scientific discoveries of the latter twentieth century. Not surprisingly,
after just 30 years of study of these remarkable—and extremely
remote—systems, advances in understanding the animals and microbial
communities living around hydrothermal vents seem to
occur with every fresh expedition to the seafloor. On average, two
new species are described each month—a rate of discovery that has
been sustained over the past 25–30 years. Furthermore, the physical, geological, and
geochemical features of each part of the ridge system and its associated
hydrothermal-vent structures appear to dictate which novel
biological species can live where. Only 10 percent of the ridge
system has been explored for hydrothermal activity to date (Baker
and German, 2004), yet we find different diversity patterns in that
small fraction. While it is well known that species composition varies
along discrete segments of the global ridge system, this “biogeographic
puzzle” has more pieces missing than pieces in place.E. Ramirez-Llodra is supported by

Covalent Modification of Carbon Surfaces by Direct and Redox Catalysed Oxidation of Carboxylates in Acetonitrile – Concepts and Mechanisms
No full textElectrografting is a relevant process that allows getting modified electrodes where organic molecules are covalently bonded to the electrode surface. The modification is typically performed using electrochemical reactions, where the transient passage by free radicals allows the formation of covalent bonds with the electrode surface. These intermediaries are generated over a wide potential window, and they are commonly prone to a second electron transfer (oxidation or reduction). Thus, this reaction competes with the surface reactions, slowing down the formation of films on the electrode. In the case of carboxylate oxidation, these competitive processes have been minimized by using a redox-catalysed process which occurs at low oxidation potentials. The rate at which modifications procedures occur is relevant in the sense that they determine the properties of the polymeric films covalently attached to the electrode surfaces. Therefore, this review focuses on the main aspects of the direct and redox-catalysed oxidation of carboxylates as a tool for the covalent modification of the surface of different carbon electrodes
Events in the life of a cocoon surrounding a light, collapsar jet
No full textAccording to the collapsar model, gamma-ray bursts are thought to be produced in shocks that occur after the relativistic jet has broken free from the stellar envelope. If the mass density of the collimated outflow is less than that of the stellar envelope, the jet will then be surrounded by a cocoon of relativistic plasma. This material would itself be able to escape along the direction of least resistance, which is likely to be the rotation axis of the stellar progenitor, and accelerate in approximately the same way as an impulsive fireball. We discuss how the properties of the stellar envelope have a decisive effect on the appearance of a cocoon propagating through it. The relativistic material that accumulated in the cocoon would have enough kinetic energy to substantially alter the structure of the relativistic outflow, if not in fact provide much of the observed explosive power. Shock waves within this plasma can produce gamma-ray and X-ray transients, in addition to the standard afterglow emission that would arise from the deceleration shock of the cocoon fireball

No full textRough biographical notes by Ritch on Melcaides Ramirez, interview, born 1828, he spoke only Spanish language, so interpreters were Sheriff Martinez and Juan Delgado. Ramirez was born in Santa Cruz, in the state of Chihuahua, came Santa Fe 1845, when American Army invaded, went to Golden, Placeres, Cerrillos area, then called Real de San Francisco, stores, saloons, mining, had ranch and farm at San Pedro, later moved to Puerta de Luna. Brothers, partners in business stock raising. Story of Mexican American War, United States Army in 1847 arresting the Ramirez brothers for being in sympathy with Cortez, the revolutionary at Taos Revolt, no evidence, were released. Ramirez brothers as militia accompanied General Armijo to Apache Canyon to meet General Kearny United States Army, Melcaides gives his recollections, men ready to fight for New Mexico, what Armijo said the them, go home or I will shoot you, American occupation, resentment of Armijo, willing to fight against both Armijo and Kearny, dissatisfaction, later acceptance of the American troops, etc. His comments on preferred commerce, trade with the United States before and after 1846, prices lower than from Mexico, this helped people accept the United States Occupation, also comment on Donaciano Vigil as Secretary of the Territory. Marriage to Lorenza Nieto, three daughters. San Pedro Spring business sold it 1866. Was Justice of Peace at Puerta de Luna. Served in the Civil War, Fort Craig, with escort to Polvadera. Preferred the American government to Mexico because more liberty, opportunity. Mexican officer class, traders, rich men kept the revenue from the govenrment, corruption. Note on death, murder E. J. Vaughn, woman involved, women, his store robbery. His testimony that a large copper mine did not belong to his family, Canon del Agua, his honesty, deceit of others.
