No full textEste livro resultou de uma entrevista idealizada pelo jornalista Jorge Duarte, em que o entrevistado é um dos mais renomados e reconhecidos presidentes da Embrapa: Eliseu Alves. Escrita em linguagem coloquial, muitas vezes com notas de afetividade, a entrevista teve duas motivações. A primeira foi conhecer a história particular de Eliseu Roberto de Andrade Alves: a família, a região onde cresceu, os aprendizados com a formação acadêmica, os desafios profissionais e as inovações teóricas e práticas que resultaram em grandes contribuições à atividade agropecuária brasileira, prioritariamente quando ele esteve à frente de empresas públicas que ajudou a fundar e administrar. A segunda foi conhecer a visão referencial do pesquisador Eliseu Alves sobre os fundamentos, a direção, a trajetória da pesquisa agropecuária e os desafios da extensão rural e da pobreza rural no Brasil. Assim, podemos dizer que é um relato histórico sobre a composição vital do percurso tecnológico da atividade rural no Brasil

No full textFreeway mural, untitled, Duarte, 1971-1972. "The multi-paneled freeway mural in Duarte is the only state approved street painting to date. After the Duarte freeway was built, the employees at the Conroc Corporation directly across the street began to complain that their view of the mountains had been obscured. Talk began on the possibility of improving the view by painting something on the grey expanse of the freeway wall. In time, the idea caught on and the with approval of the state, the Conroc Corporation invited The Duarte High School Art Department to decorate the retaining wall with images of their choice. Duarte has hosted Lynn on the Road receptions for fellow alumni and parents at his award-winning Boston restaurant, Taranta. The North End eatery is certified as one of the few “green restaurants” in the world. Duarte has won numerous awards for his sustainability efforts including the 2008 City of Boston Green Business Award, the 2011 Massachusetts Recycling Award, Waterford Crystal Chef of Chefs Award, 2011 Massachusetts Chef of the Year and Top 100 Most Influential Latinos in Massachusetts.
His work includes the use of innovation and technology to promote traceability—knowing where a food item is or has been and what has been done to it. Duarte was the keynote speaker for the university’s 2013 J-Term. No full textCity of Hope Visitor Services Center, untitled, Duarte, 1936. Visitor Services Center, interior, City of Hope (originally the Los Angeles Tubercular sanitorium), 1500 East Duarte Road (between Buena Vista Street and then 605 Freeway), Duarte. This T-shaped painting surrounding a doorway includes more than 30 nude and semi-nude figures depicting the sweeping progression of human life. To the left is the energy and hopefulness of youth, while on the right the scenes are of decline and disappointment. Connecting the two sections is a group of figures over the door representing the arts. The mural was in part inspired by Luca Signorelli's fresco series at the Orvieto Cathedral in Italy (1499-1504). The building was originally a library, and then spent many years as the John Howard Grace Graphic Arts Building. In June, 1998, the new Visitor Services Center opened and conservation work on the mural completed by Eduardo P. Sanchez of the J. Paul Getty Museum in collaboration with private conservator Aneta Zebala and her assistant Marissa Kuizenga. Sponsored by Federal Project.
